The food was the worst ever. Waited two hours and food was cold and under cooked. Management was uncaring. Complained twice to management and told I did not have to pay for food I would not feed to my dogs, and further more did not eat. That was nice. Don't eat there better off at Wendy's.

My wife and I were driving from DC to South Carolina, and due to a late start, we were spending the night in Emporia. We got to Applebee's about 9:00pm on a Thursday night. What we walked into was Applebee's Bar, Grill, and Nightclub.
They had Karaoke going, which in itself wouldn't be to bad, except the DJ had the volume up at 12 or higher. It was way too loud for as small a restaurant as this Applebee's is. My wife and I could barely hear each other across the table. I've been to concerts that are quieter than this particular restaurant. I've been to other Applebees when Karaoke is being done, and the volume is at a reasonable level, and normal conversation can be carried on. That is not the case here.
Then, at about 9:30, when no one else wanted to sing, the DJ was playing dance/club music - again, not bad in itself, but not at full volume plus.
The service itself was decent. It also seemed like this restaurant must be the thing to do on a Thursday (or maybe any) night in Emporia. It was obvious there were lots of locals based on how the staff treated them (and how many people knew each other).
Perhaps at other times of day, the restaurant better, but I would strongly avoid this place if the karaoke is going. Going across the street to the Wal-Mart Super center and picking up sandwiches (or the Oscar Mayer Lunchables) would be a better option....
Emporia is, unfortunately, a restaurant wasteland. You'll be hard-pressed to find a good place to eat here. After reading reviews of Emporia restaurants, I settled for Applebee's because it was close and I was tired from driving from the Philadelphia area. It's the first time I've eaten in a chain restaurant in years - and it'll be years more before I even begin to think about doing it again. I'd have been much better off bringing some leftovers from home and eating them cold. Worst fajitas I've ever had. Emporia will be off my list of stopping points in all future travel.

This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had.
First of all, it was 100 degrees outside and we walked in and the AC was obviously not working all that well. It wasn't totally hot, but just stale air that wasn't moving and uncomfortable.
The hostess seemed overwhelmed and not all that with it and there were tons of empty tables, but we still stood there for 10 mins waiting to be seated.
Finally got seated and the waitress finally got to us and offered to get us drinks. I ordered a diet coke. The waitress then said that 'they had a big party for a coworker last night and ran out of all soft drinks.' They only had lemonade, etc. So I ordered a raspberry lemonade out of desperation (I ALWAYS drink diet coke...) Several minutes later we got our drinks and there was something floating in mine. Sent it back, got regular lemonade, but still wary to drink it.
Got a salad which was very very very mediocre and my friends chicken sandwich was really salty. It was barely edible.
It took forever to get the check and get out of there - a quick stop for lunch turned into an hour to just eat a salad and a sandwich. We laughed about this horrible Applebee's experience all trip, but will never go back and I'll tell you - not hot to even go back to ANY Applebee's for a long time!
(BTW The restroom was a mess and looked like there had been a huge party there the night before and I refused to use it!)
