First of all, the rating is based on my personal scale, which merits things like "character" - "style" - "uniqueness" - etc. as well as issues like food and service. I rate a lot of "dive" bars higher than the average person, especially if they are characteristic of their "type" - and offer something memorable. Now they might be a little dirty, the clientele might be a little suspect, and the beer offerings might be meager -- but if I had fun there, then it's a Good Day at The Bar.
"The Bar" is just such a place. That's just what it says painted on the wall outside, which I thought was funny. It's a true dive bar, with decor that hasn't changed in years (and it shouldn't). Was going to order one beer, but the friendly (and well-curved) bartender informed me that their night's special was 5 cans of domestic for 5 bucks.
I said OK - and she handed my my can of Miller Lite. No buckets of ice and cans here - the bartender has a scratchpad with your name on it, and she keeps track of how many of your five beers are left. Saves a lot of hassle.
As I said, the bartender was very engaging; the clientele was friendly (very typical of [small-small-small] towns like this--just spitting distance from the Indiana border. I also did my best to converse with an inebriated woman who sat a chair away from me; she was hard to understand but friendly nonetheless. If she had been just slightly better looking, my night would have been complete.
All in all, a fun night - for a weeknight. I imagine this place may be even better on a late weekend, but I doubt I'll ever have a chance to find out. If you get a chance, stop in for a date with  "Real America."
