The main goal of any good resort should be to have patrons feel like they're having a good time all day. I've never run a resort, but it would seem the first line of defense would be delivering good food and drink to those enjoying the outdoor activities.
The Beach Grill was the food/drink provider for beach-goers, pool-goers and Lagoon-goers during our stay at Hawks Cay resort. No doubt that ordering outside by the water was great. But the results were not so great. And for me that brought the whole resort rating down. The food was boring or bad, the bar was badly run, and the staff wavered between surly and harried.
Fish taco - Worst I've ever had. A tasteless lump of overcooked fish on a bed of tasteless slaw, on top of a soggy, disintegrating tortilla. Barely edible when famished. Which I was.
Margarita - I didn't think it was possible to buy a $13 margarita and not catch a buzz. Beach Grill proved me wrong.
Hot dog - too charred for my daughter to eat.
Chicken Quesadilla - The most edible thing I ordered, but it contained 90% cheese and 10% chicken.
They did OK with the bottled beers, but how do you mess that up?
At some point I wised-up and stopped giving them my business. The vacation went better after that.
For a Florida-style tiki bar [palapa hut, wood and bamboo, no actual tikis or polynesian decor] this is as good as it gets. More wood and bamboo and adarondack-styled bar stools than most; closer to true tiki design. Quick, friendly and efficient service [thanks, Jocynth], well crafted drinks, both tropical rum concoctions and more standard classics [thanks again Jocynth], and pretty good prices for a high end resort all add up to great time. The view is fantastic, although I am a sucker for almost any ocean view. We had a couple of bar snacks that were very good; can't evaluate the meals at Beach Grill because we were busy at one of Hawk's Cay's other restaurants. I loved the cocktail they call a Painkiller, although I suspect that it will have a different name eventually when Pusser's trademark attorneys notice it. The firepit area is almost as much fun as the BG itself.
Review Source:Garbage....
Service: Slow, and they could care less whether you ate/drank there or not. It seemed as if we were more of an inconvenience to their TXT MSGng than a convenience for them to earn their wages.
Food Quality: It tasted as if the you could have done better eating a SPAM burger from a street vendor.
Value: Value, is a 4 letter word here if you know what I mean! If you are here looking for "value", you are wasting your time.
My recommendation: Just make the drive into Marathon, and eat. You'll thank me.
Beach Grill is just ok for a resort lunch spot. Â There is nowhere else to go if you are staying at Hawk's Cay and don't want to drive anywhere. Â Drinks were $10. Â While there, we tried:
shrimp cocktail: not traditional (it was already mixed with the cocktail sauce and served with chips). Â Good, but wish I was told this before I ordered. Everything seemd to come with chips.
ham croquettes: weird, came with chips!
mexican tortilla salad: decent
fish tacos: I thought they were not great because of the carmelized onions, but my mate thought they were absolutely delicious and different.
Service was decent. Â Glad they came around the pool to take your order.
1) I've been here before and had a wonderful time. Nice outdoor bar and decent (albeit $$) menu
2) My Conch Key hook up told me to go for a local bite and they were there last month (NOT GUEST!!)
3) Valet and information told me to go on out back
BUT
The Waiter said nope...."We do not accept credit cards or cash."
WOW.....you would think that the economy was booming and they were pack enough to turn people away. Not true.
On Prinicple - Never again! No way! Never!
Service sucks unless you eat poolside and Rupert is taking care of you. Once I sat at the bar watched my food sit and go cold while the bartender txt msg on her cell three different times. The chicken quesadilla is the best choice. The hummus has too much garlic in it. The fish taco was just runny and gross, the mahi sandwich was bland, the ham & swiss panini was cold and the cheese was not even melted. The salad is ok. If there was anything else not associated with Hawk's Cay within walking distance to the adult pool this place would go bankrupt. Would have given one star if we didn't have Rupert help us out one day.
Review Source:Yeah! First to review. Just got back from a terrific trip to Hawks Cay and found my fave spot to be the Beach Grill. Chris was my bartender and mmm...my mojito was delicious! The Beach Grill is kind of hidden between the main pool and adult pool but having a spot to get out from under the sun and sip on a fun drink while chatting it up with other guests was a blast! Love meeting new people and this is totally the place to do it. The pace down there is amazing, I had very little interest in returning to my city life. All I know is that if I closed my eyes at my desk and could wish myself to somewhere far away, it'd be Hawks Cay, bellied up to the Beach Grill bar, listening to their tricked out music system, sipping on a mojito.
