Review Source:After passing this site dozens of times, I finally visited this most interesting bar at the invitation of a long-time local. Â
The driveway goes up a high hill and at the top you'll see fire engines, bulldozers, Â and other equipment... am I at a firestation / farm / mechanic shop? Â Don't turn back! Â You're at the right place!
As you walk in, you're greeted by the gregarious proprieter and the friendly folks sitting at the bar. Â Lining the back of the bar are hats from about every aircraft carrier and the owner tells some of the most amazing stories of where they came from and bits of his history and people he's met. Â I won't repeat any here - you have to experience them for yourselves!
The view... Â the view from the bar's expansive windows is awesome!!! Â The Mendocino coast and Pacific view stretches from the Point Arena Lighthouse to Navarro ridge and beyond. Â 'Breathtaking' is overused, but is most apprpriate for this location. Â Â
If you're driving up HIghway One on Friday or Saturday from 5 to 11PM, this is the place you have to visit. Â No tap beer, its a mixed drink place... a place Hemingway woud feel right at home.
Neat place! yes, great view of the sea because your high up on the bluff. Only open 2 days a week from 5:00pm -11:00pm I would qualify this place as a lounge/dive. But that's OK! No draft beer because Bob the owner (More about him later) is open just 2 days a week and the ABC says to have draft beer you most be open at least 6 days a week. He carry's 2 beers in a can. Butt wiper and Coors. This is the place to drink HARD alchaol ! Bob is a local legend in his own mind. If he corners you, You will listen to his BLah-Blah. Forever. Hold on to your wife or girlfriend tight. This is the appitamy of a local bar. Some folks drive up the hill, see the place from the out side and get spooked and turn around and leave. It is there loss. The price for drinks is CHEAP. My wife and I had 2 beers 2 shots, (ME) and she had 1 beer and a very LARGE Cosmo. Bill was $19. We left around 6:30 but I understand it can get crazy with local-yocals at night!
WE will be back!
This place is as cool as it gets. It's a stand alone bar/firehouse in Elk CA.
There is a flashing red light visible to most all of Elk whenever it is open.
The guy who serves/owns the place there is a real cool old timer who is local fireman, veterinarian, bar impresario! They generally have good top shelf booze and sell it at lower than average price.
The place is like a museum filled with great Mendocino artifacts good times and good booze. This made my stay in Elk far better than it would've been because it's incredibly unique. You're sure to hear some amazing stories while being served.
