Second time was the charm, actually got to try the pig. They're only open Thur - Sun, so we came on a Fri so we could visit Jack Cobb's BBQ in Farmville, as well. Like most really excellent BBQ joints, this place is a total hole-in-the-wall - dark and worn, inside and out, with a few booths inside, covered in a thin pad, several of which had large tears, and a few table and chair setups which may well have been purchased at a yard sale in this very same, very rural area. Gravel lot, limited parking.
They offer a lot more than Eastern NC barbecue here -a variety of Fried Seafood, Herring when available, a Porgie Sandwich, great Burgers, including a Cheeseburger Club with homemade Pimento Cheese. and even a hot dog. - but it is the BBQ that is the main attraction, at least for most folks who come here.
The pig here is more pulled than chopped, comes out of the kitchen very well sauced with a vinegar and pepper sauce. There is a nice smokey taste, it is tender, but it is  greasey, more so than most you encounter in this area of the state. They offer both a barbecue slaw and a creamy cole slaw - avoid the cole slaw as it is too wet with too much mayo - smothers the taste of the pig. This is very good barbecue - not in the top 6 or 8 Eastern BBQ places for my taste - but definitely in the next 6 or 8.
The Burger here is simply outstanding - cooked to order on a flat top grill which forms that nice outside crust. If they didn't serve BBQ, I'd still stop by for the burger, and the newly introduced Cheeseburger Club with homemade Piment Cheese is just a killer.
You order and pay at the counter, grab a seat, and you order will be brought to you. No fountain drinks here, you get a can or plastic bottle & a cup with ice. Nice folks here, friendly and talkative if not too busy. Good BBQ, nice folks, hard to go wrong here. Finding it may be your only problem, but worth the effort.
Stopped on the way down to Swan Quarter. It's a dive with great food. Â I had the mess burger which was incredible! Â I got the large which was made up of two burgers chili cheese sauce and french fries. It was a mess and had to you my fork and knife. Paper towels on the table helped with clean up. Worth a Guy Fietti visit. My son had the BBQ chicken that he loved and we all tried and loved too. Had a great BBQ flavor and the meat was juicy. My wife and mother-in-law enjoyed the pork BBQ. Small place nice people and very reasonable prices.
