We were guests at a wedding reception held in their reception hall recently. The wedding itself was at 2 so guests began to arrive at the Blackhawk around 3-330. They had nothing prepared and were only starting to get set up for the reception when guests were arriving.
The late lunch/early dinner that was planned was over 2 hours late. The original plan was to serve food inside the reception hall. Instead they set up outside. It took so long for the food to be ready that guests actually left.
The food itself, when finally ready, was cold. They served hamburgers and hot dogs that were overcooked. The buns were dried out and stale.
This was a horrible experience for a couple to start their life together with.
Blackhawk Grill is a great family restaurant with a laidback feel and a great variety of menu options. For health nuts like me they had the smoked applewood salmon, and for the rest of my family who were watching the Lions game during dinner, they have great burgers and drink selections. It is typically a sports bar, but it is family friendly as well. Besides the restaurant, they also have the Stagecoach barn on the other side of the parking lot where people can host parties. Blackhawk caters high school dance parties, family reunions, and confirmation lunches. Whatever the occasion, the stagecoach barn is a great place to have your party. There is a volleyball court on the back lawn, horseshoes for the gentleman, as well as a play structure for the kids. The wait staff at Blackhawk is also fantastic, and mostly locals. It gives the place a small town kind of feel, which describes Richland pretty well.
Review Source:We walked in at 4:30 on a Sunday afternoon and, after waiting almost 10 minutes for the waitstaff to push two tables together, thought maybe they were close to closing. Â The tables were sticky in places and we waited another 10 minutes for our waitress to approach our table. Â In the main dining room with us, there was one pair of ladies and no one else but staff wandering around. Â We waited 15 minutes for our drink order. Â Did I forget to mention it was a 90+ degree day and their AC was marginal? Â She finally came back for our food orders, but that only led us to falsely believe we would be eating soon. Â At least 40 minutes later our food arrived.
My apple, pecan, chicken salad was delicious, someone else had a good burger, one of the kids had typical chicken tenders, but someone had grilled chicken on pasta with a completely tasteless white sauce and one of the kids had a grilled cheese that looked and tasted like it had never met a butter-related product - dry!
I'll also mention that the waitresses had on VERY short shorts, like just below the personal business.
So after spending 2 hours in a place not built for ambience in the first place, I was reminded why we usually just drive right by. Â It's too bad, since we love to support local businesses.
To suit the tastes of several generations at a family party, we chose the Blackhawk Bar and Grill on the recommendation of a friend and arrived around 6 pm on  a winter Saturday evening. The story goes that there has been a restaurant of one kind or another at this crossroads for over 40 years.
This unpreposessing roadhouse has a large main dining room that is non-smoking and a smaller dining area in the bar. The main dining room has mostly large tables to seat four or more. We were a party of six. There were moments of confusion as the host sent us to a round table which only seated five and then suggested a big table that seated ten, but we asked them to put a four-top and a two-top together, which they finally did.
The tables are polyurethaned wood with big wooden chairs, and entire dining area is fairly utilitarian and un-fancy. Â Very low-key decor and no background music as I recall. Â However, the menu is extensive and well-thought out. There is an acceptable wine list and several great brews on tap.
Everyone in my group ordered something different, from a burger to fish and chips to fried shrimp to a burrito to prime rib, and every one of us raved about the food. Â The burger came with thick-cut, homemade potato chips -- something like a really big, fresh potato stick. Â The french fries where seasoned and crispy. Â The burrito was enormous and very wet. The prime rib was a little fatty and gristly, but the actual meat was tasty. Â Entrees were accompanied by a vegetable medley that was very well prepared -- don't you hate when the squash or carrots are underdone? Overall, the quality was excellent, with each selection well-prepared and seasoned, and nicely presented.
The Blackhawk offers a specialized menu of burgers, several good seafood and entree salads, and steaks, plus daily specials. The service was prompt and courteous, and the prices were moderate. Â The dining room filled quite rapidly after our arrival with many large parties filling those big tables. Â The room became noisy and it was hard to converse and be heard.
You have to go downstairs to reach the bathrooms (how do they get around the ADA with that?) and they were marginally dirty and somewhat cramped.
We did not venture into the bar this trip as it was too early to enjoy the concert advertised on the board outside, but I suspect it would be a lively time. Â Maybe in the summer.
The Blackhawk is a great place to go with a group of adults but would be a tough place to have an intimate dinner or bring small kids. Even though the food qualifies as fine dining, the atmosphere and clientele are very casual. But after all, it is a roadhouse, and in the summer it's probably a great place to eat and be merry. We'll have to come back then and arrive later in the evening to catch the music.
Give this place a try -- it's worth the trip.
Blackhawk Bar & Grill & Stagecoach Barn, it is around the corner of Richland and Gull Lake. Very popular place, decent food and good specials. Â Casual, good price, music at Stagecoach Barn, outside seating in summertime. You might see 100 cars and motorcycle parked in large parking lot.
