Awesome restaurant with friendly staff, made a 6-hour layover in Bellingham well worth the walk/bus ride in from the airport worth it. Had Steamers, which were excellent and several different kinds of beer. Enjoyed watching the brew-master work with the kettles through the observation window next to the bar.
Review Source:I already knew how much I liked their IPA from having it in Seattle. Hence we chose to stop on our way through Bellingham.
The lamb burger was also very tasty, and the setting is cool. The kids' mac and cheese was too fancy (bread crumbs) for the kids, allowing the grownups to savor it. Service was fine but without much personality.
We came here for lunch on a Monday and luckily got to sit on their covered patio. We enjoyed all of the different rooms offered for seating and there is even a covered 'beer garden' area below the patio deck.
Three at our table ordered the beer sampler and I had an apple cider. The beer samplers provided tons of choices and at the right size. My cider was delicious and not too sweet or dry.
Food wise, upon Yelp's suggestion, two people ordered the mac and cheese. I had the salmon chowder and the reuben sandwich with a side salad. The chowder was amazing and chocked full of veggies and salmon. My sandwich was pretty good and I really enjoyed the bleu cheese vinaigrette on the salad. All of us at the table definitely agreed that this was the best mac and cheese we've had at a restaurant. You get a large bowl full and the panko crumbs on the top were a nice touch.
I liked all of the posters with the various events going on, posted all around the building. Looks like a busy spot no matter the day. The location is super handy and we wouldn't hesitate to stop here again.
I don't like to slam a place after only one visit, but I don't know if I'll ever be in Bellingham again. Â The service here is quite poor, and that's what brings the whole experience down a notch. Â The beers are all over the map, with the ESB being the only real standout of the crowd.
The menu is average pub food, which is prepared in an average manner. Â The description of the burger sounded great, but I was given an overcooked patty that really looked like it came from the freezer. Â
The outdoor deck is nice and the tent in the courtyard looks cool for events, but overall, BBB doesn't bring anything innovative to the table at all.
Here again is another great brewery that is a place to get away with the family. Though they do have a bar area you can go into that is less family atmosphere. I highly recommend the Smoked Salmon Chowder. I'm hesitant when trying some salmon dishes as I'm afraid that they'll be too fishy but OMG this is the best Chowder I think I've ever had. The menu itself makes it hard to decide on what to get as well. Great place to go with a group of people and have a good conversation.
Review Source:The wait staff do not give you anywhere near enough attention. Â It's hard to get a second beer, no matter how much you want to give them your money.
Beers taste pretty good, but I have NEVER had such a terrible hangover as I had after having two BB scotch ales. Â So, my advice? Â Only drink ONE beer.
On that note, I guess it's better that the waitstaff never come back to ask you if you want another beer.
The beer was good the service was definitely not. Â
Bought a keg for a wedding from this outfit. Â Had a lot a trouble getting the tap supplied to hold in the keg. Â We were told to bring the tap back and they would exchange (right during the wedding reception no less). Â The new tap was no better than the first.
The tap was not the problem it was that the very beat up keg that they supplied would not hold a seal. Â Could not even get half the beer out. Â
Absolutely no consideration when the keg was returned other than an "Oh Well that's they way it goes". Â
I cannot recommend anyone using this establishment to supply the beer for an event. Â We were very dissatisfied with the service.
If I was Robin Williams in "What Dreams May Come," my heaven would have been BBay. This is the best beer I've had in my life. I have tried almost everything on their menu and love this place more than some of my immediate family members. Order an IPA or Scotch Ale if you like heavier beer and start off with their imperial nachos, hummus plate, or pretzels. Their smoked salmon clam chowder, reuben, BLAT, macaroni and cheese, and pulled pork are divine. Also, get a house salad. They make their own croutons and house dressing- you won't regret it.
The place is always pretty busy, but the waitstaff are able to get you seated in a reasonable amount of time. The ambiance in there is comforting too- high ceilings and brick walls with local art and string lights. A+
Quick Takes:
* best beer in Bellingham (large selection)
* classic local spot (probably best known place in town)
* better than average pub food
* big place, often busy but can usually accommodate larger groups after a little wait
* order the cup of pretzels with mustard if you just want something to munch on with your beer!
Really great beer in a typical brew-pub setting. This is an iconic Bellingham spot and is generally pretty busy but is a big place so the wait isn't usually too bad when I've gone. They have standard pub options such as burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, as well as some pricier/fancier dinner options (which I've never ordered).. Food I've ordered has been better than average but nothing super amazing, with the exception of their smoked salmon chowder with is fantastic and a favorite amongst my friends. They have cheap options for their small salads/cups of soup if you are looking for just a small snack while you guzzle their beers.
Well, it's simply a yummy place with a lot of beer... so what is there not to like?
Pros?
-Their beer is great!
-Relatively cheap soup and salad combos for lunches
-Nice views
-Friendly and quick service
Cons?
-Nothing really.. Â it's just definitely got more of a chain feel than a local feel and I suppose I imagined it being a bit more cliche
Great atmosphere, large space to accommodate big groups. Â Was certainly busy and hopping on a Friday night but we were able to find tables for everyone fairly quickly. Â I tried their Oatmeal Stout and absolutely loved it. Â I also had a cup of their Beer Beef Soup and was very satisfied with it. Â I wasn't overly hungry and it was just enough to supplement the beer. Â The flavor and meatiness was great. Â My friends tried the salmon chowder bowl, the fried oysters and the meatloaf. Â Everyone enjoyed their food and beers.
Review Source:Great brew pub - very good beer, with very good food. Â What more could one ask for from a pub. Â It was busy on a weeknight at 5:30pm, with a 15 minute wait, and tells the story of how popular a place it is. Â The grilled salmon I had was very good, as was the beer (Scotch Ale) beef stew, as was the 6 x 5 oz. beer sampler. Â The grilled salmon here is just as good as at Anthony's.
Review Source:A classic local brewery in Bellingham, Boundary Bay has a delicious menu as well. The other night I ordered the Salmon Pesto Sandwich and a side salad with dill ranch dressing. It was perfect, every part of it. The yummy foccacia bread is lightly toasted with a pesto-butter sauce, served with a nice chunk of salmon. The meal was satisfying, delicious, and the perfect amount of food. I had a dry Riesling wine with it, which was reasonably priced for a glass.
I'm not a beer connoisseur, but they do have a tasty selection of local brewed beer. I believe one or more of their beers are served at a handful of bars in the Northwest, you may've seen or already tried their beer in Seattle. Head to Bellingham to try their other beers!
They serve only beer and wine, no liquor. Along with an all ages dining area, they have the large bar area which is 21+ and often has live music on the weekends. In the summer the outdoor section is enjoyable and in the shade. The lower outdoor section in the summer also has live music and dancing. Great restaurant, a must if visiting Bellingham!
Good food and selection of their own beers. Â Happy hour eats are ridiculously cheap. Â We split three items between the two of us, each person had something to drink, and the tab was $17. Â SEVENTEEN DOLLARS. Â Love the mac and cheese.
If you really love their beer, you can buy a gallon jug of it, or a whole keg. Â I worked out the price and it's better than water (and tastier too).
Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro is another must try in the north sound for any beer lover. The tab room and bistro has a very rustic feel walls are adorned with great local artists' works as well as other eclectic items to create the cozy feeling in a large room. The staff is very knowledgeable of the beer and food and can always make good recommendations. Â Again they offer a wide range of regular style beers as well as great seasonals and other new offerings.
The food is really good as well to go with great beer. I ordered the Pesto Salmon Sandwich served on foccacia with a basil pesto cream cheese, lettuce, tomato and a house salad. The foccacia was perfect to hold the salmon and the basil pesto cream cheese gave the sandwich a different twist and match perfect with the fish. Try the alehouse vinaigrette nice on any salad. Nice place.
The beer (Scotch) was excellent and reserved -- not nearly as tart as other Scotches I've had before. The Prime Rib French Dip on the other hand... was not anywhere near worthy of the name "Prime Rib". It may have been rib roast, but it wasnt ever prepared like prime rib. The beef was brown and flaky-dry. And as any person with intimate knowledge of prime rib knows, brown and flaky dont describe prime rib unless yer talking about the salty crusty fatty edge of the roast...
Everything tasted fine. Good even, thanks to making my own horseradish sauce -- real horseradish and mayonnaise (1/3 parts). But BBB&B be guilty... of false advertising. You want a REAL Prime Rib French Dip? Go to any Houston's Restaurant to see and taste how it's supposed to be.
Beer is great, by the way.
Mac and cheese and local micro brews? If you find yourself in downtown Bellingham, do yourself a favor and settle into the beer garden in the summer or the spacious bar/restaurant in the winter and eat and drink till your little Northwest belly is full.
The perfect place to hibernate and talk about the sweet pow pow on Baker or start your hamster crawl around to the local bars, Boundary Bay is a Btown institution. This was probably my first ever micro-brew, and it holds it's place in my heart despite the many others I've tried since. Hoppy hops hops and farm to table Northwest dining? Doesn't get any better than that! Try the burger, the summer fish frys, that M & C I mentioned, or any fresh fish they have on the menu.
I've been there many times, but most recently on a holiday trip to see the family. We were out on a Friday night and walked in the door right as it was last call. The bartendress poured us one last glass of this PNW elixir and we cheers-ed being home. She was so sweet, didn't rush us, and seemed to love her work. Local babes serving Bellingham beer. My heart was full of sudsy love, Thanks BB!
Located in Downtown Bellingham, this Brewery offers some space to drink and grab some treats. Just visited once while in town, but my highlights were as follows:
+Bellingham Blonde - A lighter ale with crisp summertime feel.
+Scotch Ale - strong malty beer that is complex with a lingering hop finish.
+Mac & Cheese consisting of elbow macaroni with Fontina, Monterey Jack, Cheddar & Parmesan. A bit crusty on the top but soft & gooey in the middle.
I found their beer to just be very meh - tried the dry irish stout and oatmeal stout. Â It wasn't bad, but I sure wouldn't go out of my way to drink it.
Somewhat to my surprise, the food was quite delicious, however. Â I really enjoyed their beer beef stew, it was hearty and flavor was just perfect, couldn't have made it better myself. Â Tapenade was overpriced for portion (seriously it should be 5.99 not 7.99) and they should switch out that lame toast for more french bread, but the spread itself was good, fresh and tangy.
Delicious beer, great food, dope location, lively atmosphere, professional service... this place has it all!
Boundary Bay is the standard to which I compare all other brew pubs to some extent. Â This is probably due to the fact that it was the first one that I returned to regularly, and I've had a lot of great dining and drinking experiences with friends here.
This place is built on beer, and they certainly do that well. Â Boundary Bay IPA and Scotch Ale can be found elsewhere in the region, but I'm pretty sure that many of their seasonals and other releases can only be found here at the source-- only place I've seen 'em, anyway. Â The IPA and the Scotch are certainly kick-ass brews (I bought a whole keg of the Scotch Ale once), I always love to try something different and it seems like they've always got a new one or two on tap. Â Most recently I had a couple pints of the seasonal red ale; tasty indeed!
The restaurant here puts out an impressive menu of soups, salad, seafood, sandwiches, burgers, steaks, pizza, pasta, etc... plus there are daily specials and most of the ingredients are from local sources. Â Everything I've tried so far was superb, and while dining here isn't exactly cheap the prices are really reasonable for the quality of the meals served. Â Service is a cut above as well; the wait staff here are well trained on the menu, the brews, and keeping diners happy. Â On my last visit, I was having a hard time deciding between a few choices and the waiter recommended the lamb burger (with goat cheese on a pretzel bun, served with a side salad): awesome! Â He kept the beer coming, too :)
All of the above would be enough to make this a 5-star joint for me, but the location (just above the waterfront in downtown Bellingham), the facility itself (huge old building with a full brewery, tap room, indoor/outdoor dining areas, beer garden with live music stage) and the great people working and drinking in it make it really special.
A very peaceful, relaxing pub to grab a burger and knock back a couple pints of delicious, delicious beer.
I reccomend sitting on the patio if the weather allows and soak up the sunshine with your suds, you can even get a view of the Sound from out there.
The food here has always been superb and filling. I've hit this place many times after mountain biking and that just makes it all the better! A Bellingham standby!
I frequented this place many times during my summer stay in Bellingham, and every time I left feeling overly satisfied with no complaints. Â
Boundary Bay has a fun, laid-back atmosphere, which is perfect to get together with friends or go out for dinner. Â It's rare to find a brewery that serves delicious food, but the food here is amazing. Â I highly recommend the burgers, the B. L. A. T. and the Tofu sandwich are my favs, so much so I could hardly bring myself to try anything else. Â However, I did want to try some of the dinner items but they are priced significantly higher than the sandwiches and other dishes- minor drawback.
The beer is great, try the Blonde if you're looking for a light well balanced ale. Â Also the service is also always on point. Â To me, Boundary Bay is a downtown Bellingham icon that you should be sure not to miss.
It was explained to me that this place is a local institution. Â I do love beer, so any brewery, especially one deemed as such, was on my must-try list.
The place itself is really cool. Â It looks like an old warehouse in the downtown Bellingham area, and has an outdoor patio area with some grass, where they have reggae nights on Wednesdays (use of the words reggae and grass in the same sentence not entirely intended...).
I tried the sampler, which had 6 beers, including a stout, amber, IPA and a few other staples. Â All but one were pretty good, but nothing spectacular a la Sierra Nevada. Â Our waitress was nice...sort of. Â We asked her to take a picture, but she was too busy and blew us off. Â Granted, she did return 20 minutes later and offer, but it would have taken her 10-15 seconds. I found that a bit off.
All in all, decent experience in the area, but nothing in particular that blew me away.
The IPA that is the standard that other brewers have to match or beat is the Boundary Bay IPA. Â I love this beer and there are only a few others that can match or beat it. Â So, it's a given that I'm going to stop by the brewery when I'm travelling to and from Vancouver, BC from Seattle.
It's a beautiful Sunday midafternoon and we arrive when all the doors are open and the patio is so inviting. Â It's not too busy, so we opt for outside seating. Â "That'll be a 15 minute wait." says the guy behind the counter as he folds knives and forks into napkins not missing a beat. Â Ah, can't be too long as I can see there are 3-4 empty tables. Â So I say, "Sure, we'll wait. Â I'm sure it's worth it?" Â Whereby, he calmly gives me the electronic cup holder pager not saying a word and continues to fold knives and forks away.
Boy is my stomach growling as other's come asking for the same seating and told it'll be really long wait, "You can go into the bar area where it's open seating".  I say to my fiancée, "This is taking a while, can I go into the bar and get you a beer?"  She says, "I'm starting to become cranky as I'm really hungry!"  I'm starting to second guess that going to the bar was a better option and screw the patio.
I'm starting to count the seconds and almost seems to the minute, it's been the mandatory 15-20 minute wait we have to endure and we are walked to our table where water and menus are waiting. Â Where we end up waiting for another 10 minutes where you can see our desperation for having one of those coveted IPAs to get our blood sugar elevated. Â The person that showed us the table comes by and says, "Has ??? come by?" Â I say, "We've not seen him.". Â Then she offers an apology saying he's the only "server" for the patio and she'll take our beer order were we again have another 10 minute wait for the beer and then she takes our menus without us making a food order.
Now, the server shows up and asks, "Are you eating today?" seeing that our menus are gone guessing he assumes we're skipping the meal. Â Quickly we blurt out, "I'll have the burger and she'll have the French Dip".
The food comes and my fiancée wonders, "Isn't there supposed to be cheese on a French Dip?"  Hmmm, I don't know, but I'm starving and would eat it with or without cheese this time.
As you can see we had an off day and seemed like nothing was going right. Â I had the feeling I was in an episode of "Kitchen Nightmares" where the service was running at the pace and ambiance of your local post office where you have 2-3 greeters at the counter and 1 server. Â
That said, "I still love their IPA" and next time I'm going to the self-serve bar stool where the beer is at arms reach.
It really breaks my heart to write this review but I did not have a great experience with Boundary Bay. Â I live in Santa Monica now, but grew up in Seattle. Â This was my first time home in over two years and I made an effort to drive up to Bellingham just so I could visit BB. Â The food was alright. I had the french dip and my girlfriend had the B.L.A.T. Â The BLAT actually looked great. Generous avocado, bacon, etc. The french dip was okay. Not sure what would make that sandwich amazing since it's pretty basic. Â The BLAT was definitely better.
The beer was good. The IPA was what I liked the most and therefore got a growler of it to bring back to Seattle with me. Â The rest of this story in a bit. Â I also had the imperial IPA which was very good. However, it was served in a 10 ounce glass which always rubs me the wrong way. Â Charge me more and serve me less because it has over some arbitrary level of ABV. Â In this case I believe it was 8% which is pretty low. Â I don't like it when any brewery does this, but this is not why I am giving two stars.
After we left, we drove around and took pictures of the area. Â It was a great day and the weather was beautiful. I had the growler in a bag in the back seat with a pint glass and another growler and occasionally had to stand them up since they would fall over. The other growler was filled at another brewery. Â I kind of noticed a little beer on the BB growler but just figured it was because it was over-filled at the bar. Â When I got home and put the growlers in the fridge, the BB growler was half empty. Â The waitress or bartender had failed to tighten the lead and therefore I lost half the beer in the backseat of my rental car. Fantastic. Â I lose out on beer that I rarely get and made an effort to have and my rental will be returned reeking of beer.
Our waitress seemed kind of spacey but I never assume I have to tighten my own growler when it's filled at a brewery. Â Shortcomings on basic things like that make it impossible for me to give the sort of rating I would prefer to give a place like Boundary Bay. Â Maybe I'll be back someday and update this review for the better, but in the meantime, the waitresses and bartenders should learn to tighten the growler lids.
Great Beer, Great Pub Food, Cool Place w/Great Service!
This will be my must stop list anytime I am in Bellingham! I can't wait to try more of the menu!
I recently had a great time here after some Mountain Biking in the area and was craving a ALL Natural Ground Beef Char-Broiled Burger with all the fixings on a Ralf's pretzel bun & your choice of roasted potatoes or salad! I had BOTH!
The food and their Dry Irish Stout are SUPERB!
Don't miss this place, I'd say it is even worth a field trip expedition of you like BEER even if you are not in the area. Yeah, It's that good!
One of my best friends has been threatening my life for years, telling me he will end it if I ever go to Bellingham and DON'T go to Boundary Bay. Â Finally, after all these years, I made it. Â I'm alive. Â Don't worry, he's too small to do any damage to me.
Really cool place. Â I wish I could have experienced the beer garden, which looked huge and really badass. Â Alas, we sat in the taproom. Â It's a somewhat loud atmosphere and we had good, fast service. Â
What did I have to drink? Â Well, I wasn't in a huge drinking mood unfortunately because all of the beers offered sounded good. Â I had the Scotch Ale, served in a fancy little glass. Â Full of rich, sweet, scotchy flavor with a strong smack to the mouth of hops. Â
What did I have to eat? Â I had a cup of clam chowder which made me exclaim, "HOT DAMN THEMS SOME GOOD CLAMS!" much to the dismay of the people sitting next to us and the embarrassment of my fiancee. Â Then I got really excited about seeing a B.L.A.T. on the menu. Â For those of you poor, underprivileged souls who have never encountered such a food - Bacon Lettuce Avocado Tomato. Â It was straight up amazing. Â I almost had a When Harry Met Sally restaurant moment.
I want to convince the baby factory I permanently room with to move to Bellingham. Â I'd be a regular at Boundary Bay. Â I might dabble in alcoholism. Â Who knows. Â Maybe it's for the best that we stay in the Twin Cities.
If you're from south of Bellingham, BTW, and you make the trek up there... do yourself a real favor and take Chuckanut Drive up from Burlington.
One of the best brew pubs I've been to. Period.
Their standard selection of brew are always spot on. My personal favourite is the ESB followed closely by the Scotch Ale. They always have rotating taps of seasonal beer that are worth a try.
The food here is unbelievably good. This isn't just your run of the mill pub classics. They've taken great pains to make the dishes as tasty as possible. They use as many local and seasonal ingredients as they can get their hands on, and it shows in the quality. I've managed to work my way through almost everything on the menu and there isn't a bad dish on there.
The Chicken Enchiladas and Mac & Cheese are the stand-out favourites for me.
If you're just popping in for a quick pint, be sure to order the Bavarian pretzel. It's worth it!
Came here recently to get dinner before a nearby concert. Great place to start the night out right! Excellent food, chill atmosphere, outdoor BBQ, lots of beer... Need I say more? Probably not, but of course I will...
First we went downstairs and outside to the beer garden and BBQ they had going. Great atmosphere and vibe on a sunny spring day. We ended up eating inside where started with a caesar salad that was excellent. Very fresh and perfect size for a starter. For dinner I had the reuben - delish! I haven't tasted a better reuben in ages. My friend had some of their beef stew and another salad. Everything was great. I'm not a huge beer drinker, but sampled several of the different kinds while she had a few. They have a great selection of their own beers.
The service was friendly, prompt, and knowledgable. The food was better than I expected. And the location and environment were great. Next time I am in B'ham I may consider coming back if I didn't want to try another new place.
Recommended!
On first glance, this seems like a pretty standard brew pub. Â It reminded me a lot of the Fish Tale Brewpub in Olympia, or Pike Place Brewery -- y'know, the kind of sea-faring feeling bar with lots of wooden tables and echoey talking people and standard food and its own beer.
As soon as we ordered, I found that this wasn't the case it all. Â Appearances can be deceiving. Â I ordered the seasonal tripel, which was delicious and sweet and deceivingly drinkable (y'know, everything a tripel should be). Â Then, a friend and I decided to split the macaroni and cheese and yam alechiladas for dinner -- which was pretty much the best decision ever.
First of all, the yam alechiladas were freaking amazing. Â They split them onto two different plates for us (+1 to service), and they were just...perfect. Â I need to figure out how to make them myself, because I'm pretty sure I am going to be craving them periodically for the rest of time, and I live nowhere near Bellingham. Â Spicy flavorful mole mixed with amazingly perfect mashed yams wrapped up in a lovely little tortilla package. Â
Then, there was the macaroni and cheese. Â Which was just a pile of amazingly rich cream and melted cheese of various kinds. Â The worst kind of mac and cheese skimps on the cheese and the sinfulness, and this one did NOT have that problem. Â Excellent excellent awesome.
Next time I come to Bellingham, I don't think I'll be able to resist coming back here.
