We have driven past this restaurant at least a thousand times over the years and finally stopped for the first time yesterday to have dinner. It was a nice surprise and we decided to try it again this morning for breakfast.
The outside doesn't really do much to draw you in, which is why it took us seven years to stop. There is a sign outside that says the special was a Coney dog and fries for $6.99, which seems a little much.
When we walked in for dinner around 5p.m., we had our choice of places to sit. By the time we left however, there was a wait for a table.
Since the name of the restaurant is Breakfast and Burgers, and the menu had a large selection of burger to choose from, I thought I should try what appeared to be their specialty. I tried to get my husband to order the Belly Buster Burger, which, if he could finish it in twenty minutes would be free, but he ordered a grilled cheese and fries instead, while I ordered the Blazer Burger. We both enjoyed our meals and left full. We were pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness of the restaurant, the quality of the food, and the overall experience. We decided to add the B&B Express to our places we would try again.
This morning we arrived around 10:00 a.m. for breakfast and the place was packed. We were next in line for a table when two spots at the counter opened up and we decided to take them instead of waiting for a table.
We were able to get a good view of the entire restaurant, including the kitchen area. Every seat was taken and there was a line at the door of people waiting to sit. They had about half dozen waitresses tending to tables, and they were working like crazy. The cooks were on top of orders, and we could see them busily preparing breakfast for the crowds of people. It was chaotic, but everyone working there kept busy and moving quickly and efficiently. You could tell they had been trained well and knew what they were doing.
Our breakfasts were good, as was the fresh coffee. The staff was friendly and didn't make us feel rushed.
We will definitely return.
this use to be the BEST eatery.....the onion rings are still to die for...batter not breaded...too good.  They use to have a great menu.  Their chicken fried steak was velvet.  Now they have down-sized their menu........shorten their hours.......now they are closed monday and tuesday.   They have resorted to putting an open sign on the sidewalk.  I always had to time my eating there on off hours because the line to eat there was out the door....now I wonder when they will close...all the signs are there........sad .  I used to suggest it as a great place for tourist.  Now I don't even  think of it.  The one in mancelona is equally meh.  What happened?  the parking lot was always full.....now tumbleweed blows thru it.......give me back orginal place.  the waitstaff is still lovely.......great smiling service.....they have to be suffering
Review Source:Greasy. Fast. Friendly. Convenient. Â Admittedly, my only real experience in Kalkaska is either driving through en route to Iceman Cometh in the fall, or points on the lake in the summer. Â To my knowledge I've never done any eating in this town, but the B&B Express won me over today. Â We were headed south after torrential rains last night and needed some comfort food. Â They were friendly (exceedingly so), busy as heck, but also fast enough to get us our order quickly. Â We had burgers.
We enjoyed the local flavor over a chain restaurant any day. Â We'll be back for sure if we're passing through.
