This actually happened to me at The Brightwood Tavern:
Long and gray-haired old man: Excuse me, can I ask you a personal question?
Me: Um... ok...
Long and gray-haired old man: Are you a traffic ticket?
Me: Uh.. no?
Long and gray-haired old man: Cuz you got fine written all over you.
Me: [hysterical laughter]
Yes, that actually happened. No, seriously. Seriously!
The Brightwood Tavern is a cozy little bar with a slew of regulars, a pool table in the middle, video poker in the corner and friendly bartenders. There are booths all the way around to catch up with friends or people-watch the other patrons. My friends and I grabbed a round of drinks here one night and our tab for a draft beer, a bottled cider and a cocktail came to $10.50. So cheap! Now that's the kind of tavern I could frequent on a regular basis. The amusing come-ons of the clientele are just a bonus.
Highway 26 is littered with cool little hole in the wall pubs....but they all have the same mountain-man-kill-you-with-an-ax feeling. Â You kinda expect the jukebox to screech to a halt when you walk in, since no one will recognize you.
This is not the case at the Brightwood Tav. Â My wife and I recently moved just down the street from this off the beaten track tavern. Â It has a log cabiny feel which is warm and inviting. Â The staff are entertaining, but not as much as the patrons.
While they do not have any vegan items on the menu (its a calamari/fried foods kinda joint), I hope to gently persuade the owners to carry Daiya so we can enjoy a pizza during our drinking visits.
Stop on by, you will love it!
This could be a hidden little gem up on the mountain. They have some great burgers. My son has been trying to get me to try the Dragon burger and I finally caved in tonight, not wanting to mess around making dinner.
I think I have found a new love, and yeah, we will be dating regularly now. How can you turn down anything with roasted whole cloves of garlic and onion on a grilled burger patty, with a heavy dose of blue cheese sauce. I felt my arteries slamming shut with the sauce, but it was totally worth it.
The garlic is subtle, nothing that will send you over the edge and the fries with it were crispy and perfect. I was debating breaking it off with the burger and going with the fries, but decided it was better to keep them paired up.
The Brightwood Tavern sits on the corner of Brightwood Loop Rd and parking can be tricky if they are crowded. They have a pool tournaments every Sunday afternoon and they get busy here. I haven't tried it yet, but I my son gets the fried chicken and says its pretty good, so I will update my review when I have the chicken on the plate.
If you are on the mountain, stop in and try them, you won't be disappointed.
