The Brown is a drinking institution here in Indiana. While the crowd tends to be a little bit older than college age, there can be a few IUP students around at times. The Brown serves food...sometimes...but there is no menu and the selection is always limited because this is a place primarily for drinking. Sometimes there is a cover charge, but that's only when they have live music or some other kind of event going on. Be aware that happens often and will most likely leave you feeling like you paid too much to get in. But, they also have a pool table in the back room.
The best way to describe the Brown is dark, dingy, and cheap. It's an old place. Sometimes it's uncomfortably crowded making it hard to even move while other times it is completely dead. You never know what you'll be walking into to or who you'll see which is part of its charm. The only exception is that it's always smokey. The Brown was not affected by the recent smoking ban in Pennsylvania, so be prepared for the heavy cloud of tobacco when you walk in and the lingering smell in your clothes when you walk out.
