Brown's serves cheap food quickly, and by cheap I mean both in cost and in quality. I used to eat here fairly frequently but figured it would probably better for my health if I took it easy on their fried chicken. The chicken happened to be the one thing off their buffet that I thought they did well. Everything else on their buffet was passable, but tasted bland. I'd prefer to pay more and have them use higher quality ingredients. They seem to do a good business, and have a large number of regulars so I doubt they'll shake things up by going that route.
The staff and management were always a pleasure to do business with, and was one of the reasons why I would come despite my feelings about the quality of their food.
As another reviewer mentioned, they do get slammed on Sunday for lunch. They also aren't open for dinner on Sunday.

I was so pleased to find a country buffet a little closer to Gainesville. Â Normally, my family makes the trek all the way to Lake City for Ole Times. Â So Brown's is much more convenient for everyone. Â The food is not as delicious as Ole Times, and the selection is much smaller. Â But, I take what I can get. Â It is fresh and the main staples of country cuisine can be taken advantage of.
Don't come here for carry-out service, the buffet is where it's at. Â Lunch time on a weekday is pure entertainment, filled with locals and happy travelers. Â The fried pork chops are thin cut and crispy, great with hot sauce. Â The fried chicken is fresh, fulfilling, but of the non-crunchy variety. Â Chicken and Dumplins' is more dumplings than chicken, my favorite preparation. Â The dumplings are chewy and divine. Â The mac and cheese is partially processed cheese food, but it still decent.
I steer clear of the canned okra and tomatoes. Â Other than that, everything else on the hot bar is fine. Â The sweet tea is perfect, served with lime instead of lemon. Â There are almost as many desserts as there are savory items; cake, coconut cream pie, custard, and multiple flavors of cobbler. Â I have yet to touch the salad bar.
The complimentary bread basket is often by request only, unless you are a regular. Â And, the waitresses here are likely to give you some tuuude for asking. Don't let them hurt your feelings, it is more like tough love. Â You can have soft rolls (not tried yet), masa cornbread (creamier texture), or ultra-buttery biscuits. Â
Friday night is the catfish and shrimp buffet for about $10.39. Â Bring your appetite, and check out the country fashions. Â Ya'll come get some fixin's, ya hear!
I wasn't crazy about their breakfasts either. Go on a Sunday afternoon (be forewarned about the church crowd) and try the buffet. It is delicious home-cooked comfort food. Fried chicken, baked chicken, turkey and stuffing, turnip greens, green beans, mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, CARROT SOUFFLE (omg, the best!!) Give it another try. Â Don't waste your time or calories on the desserts, very mediocre (except for the peach cobbler...its not too bad.)
I also hear the seafood buffet on Friday nights is pretty good.
**I will come back to Brown's at some point and review them on an actual meal. Â This review is solely for the take-out breakfast.**
This morning my boss offered to treat me to breakfast. Â Brown's is less than two minutes away from my job and has a reputation as an excellent buffet. Â He recommended the bacon & egg sandwich highly. Â Everyone who ordered (except me) got that sandwich. Â I went with scrambled eggs, sausage, grits and toast. Â Regular ol' diner fare that any greasy spoon should be able to do well.
The restaurant was on a 20-minute take-out delay when I called in the food, so that may have had something to do with it. Â All the same, this was probably one of the worst breakfasts I've ever had. Â All of the food was cold. Â Not lukewarm, COLD. Â The eggs were crusted on top and runny in several places underneath. Â All in all, quite terrible and a meal that would have absolutely been sent back to the kitchen if I had been on premises. Â Everyone else enjoyed their food, so I have no idea what went wrong with mine.
I'll get them another shot ... just not sure when and not sure if I'd be willing to pay for it myself.
