just back from haleiwa and b's. the music was so loud we couldn't talk without shouting. service was terrible. the guy behind the bar was more interested in talking to his friends than providing any service. it took 30 minutes to get an order of fries and the shrimp cakes. both were disgusting and the bartender never even asked if we wanted entrees. never going back. have to give them a star they don't deserve.

Oh my sweet jesus, this might be one of my favorite restaurants in town. It's definitely known more for being the place to go after hours, but the food is absolutely amazing. We tried a bit of everything and it was all delicious, but the thing you can not go without ordering is the Truffle Fries. The description on the menu says they are "soon-to-be world famous fries" and they are not wrong, too good!

Great Service and Food  and great tips on how to really explore and make the most of our short trip to the North Shore.

Food is just okay. The poke was good, their gumbo was not. It was thin (no okra?) and lacking flavor. The shrimp pieces were also rubbery . The bread served with it tasted good but was very greasy. The truffle fries were really tasty, but literally dripped grease when slightly squeezed. The Hawaiian sandwich was pretty good, but could have used more pickle and have the ingredients more evenly distributed on it. Beer was cold, but the place itself was very warm - had doors open no fan or ac. Sevice was just barely okay for us, but others were getting neglected while the waitress talked to friends at the bar. Torn on whether or not I'll be back.

I was torn on this review as the food was so good but the service was TERRIBLE! We waited forever to have someone acknowledge we were there and seat us at a table. Then the wait started again to try to get someone to take our drink order. It continued on like that the whole time. The food was pretty good though. I was mad they took SO LONG to provide service we missed going to sunset beach to watch the sunset!

Love the good, love the service (even quick on a busy night) very fun place to be on the north shore!!! Food is great! Not the typical fried bar food! Don't eat me wrong some is fried but they offer great salads, fresh fish and edamame. I love the truffle fries, Kailua pig quesadilla, ahi(I think it was ahi) salad and chicken wings. Drinks are always made well. Thursday night karaoke gets busy which makes the outside deck a great place to cool off and get some air.  They have security on busy nights, friendly security. They have a lot of local bands play here. Good mix of mostly locals, young and old, military and some tourists. Parking is great, food is fantastic, happy hour is happy and people here are the best!

i must admit, this place has grown on me. Not the place that it was when it initially opened, but what it has morphed into. It stopped trying to be a higher-end tourist draw and settled into its own groove as a locals' hangout with fairly cheap drinks, a casual atmosphere and good food. I've done a lot of taste testing, and they have the best hot wings in Haleiwa. Not your Asian-style or heavily-breaded wings, but real hot wings with extra sauce that you can sop up with your celery. The price of beers like Fire Rock during happy hour are among the best around....think they're $4 a pop. I'd also recommend the poke duo, which is almost always fresh and unique. They have TVs for sports games, although the layout still strikes me as odd. Still, it gets my vote as a chill place to grab a cold beer and hot wings.

This review is soley for the food, and not for the bar.

We came during a North Shore excursion one evening, after reading several reviews and seeing that Opal was closed we decided to come here mostly because of the mango cheesecake.

When we walked in, at around 5 we were the only ones there to eat, and the bar was already packing up with people. But our server came over quickly to seat and serve us.

    Our party ordered:
    Truffle Fries
    Chicken Bascillica
    Fish and Chips
    Hawaiian Sandwich
    Kalua Pork Sandwich
The cheesecake was not available :(

The only thing worth mentioning is the truffle fries. They were SO divine and the portion was HUGE. They were fries cooked in truffle oil and covered head to toe in parmesan and spices. UGH, so delicious. Not sure if anyone else can top these truffle fries!

As far as food goes, It was GOOD BAR FOOD. But as far as food/restaurant food goes, it is okay and maybe 2 belly rubs at best. It was filling, portions were hefty but we all felt like they were a little heavy handed with the salt. If you're interested in lunch or dinner without drinks, this is not the place to go. If you want a chill bar environment with good food, then come on by.

Disappointing. I read Yelp reviews and was excited to try. Three of the dishes we wanted were out! And two were highlighted in tips in yelp. They had NO Ahi tuna. So no ahi salad and no poke. Couldnt figure out why they didnt have ingredients for the other item. In my opinion, the appetizers were good; however, the main courses were so so to not good - some examples - soupy floury gumbo, over cooked dry fries (the waitress disagreed with us without trying!), mediocre burger. I called in advance to find out if they serve lunch. they said kitchen opens at 3. i called back to ask if they were serving the full dinner menu bc we were coming in around 4, and they said yes. I'd call the service mixed. Lots of plates piled up from appetizers and not cleared until after main course served. Our toddler was screeching and as we were about to take her outside we were told she can't screech like that. Kind of strange as we were the only diners and its very casual. And the bar is set apart. I can't imagine she was the liveliest patron the bar ever saw!!! I cant understand the disconnect between reviews and what we experienced. Maybe they were having a bad day.

Ended up here b/c the Thai place we wanted to try next door was closed. Besides the fact that they had sold out of half the things we ordered so we had to change our order a few times, I was pleasantly surprised by how GOOD the food was!! Pork chops were perfectly cooked, poke was fresh. Didn't love the atmosphere, but def good place for some drinks and GOOD bar food.

The most fun you can have at night on the North Shore!

For our wedding week, we wanted a place we could take all our friends and family to celebrate, dance, and socialize at night on the North Shore.

So we chatted with the owners at B's about bringing in our group for one of their Thursday Karaoke nights.

The owners, Zack and Rob, were incredibly awesome to work with from start to finish.  They welcomed us with warmth and excitement and even suggested they put together a speciality cocktail for our group to order with a secret code word.

    Fun!

Our friends and family had an awesome time at B's that night, singing karaoke, throwing darts, sharing drinks and laughs.

The bar has big wide windows, spacious outdoor seating, top-notch service, YUMMY nibbles, and is just an all-around great place to grab a drink and a bite, and have a fabulous time.

There IS nightlife on the North Shore!!

Thanks to Zack, Rob and our server, Natasha (great name by the way) - for taking SUCH incredible care of our friends and family.

We'll see you again soon for some karaoke and grinds!

    Love, the newlyweds.

I went to B's again it just keeps getting better every time. This time I had the not sure what it was called but it was a chicken pesto pasta. It was amazing, not to mention a lot of food. I can tell the chef is very passionate about the food he cooks.

P.S. I just eat some of the leftovers, it just as good as it was last night and still have some left to eat for dinner tonight ;-)

Stopped in with a group of friends after an outing on the North Shore.  We were starving and were quickly seated and going over the menu.  The waitress explained the happy hour specials and a few people took advantage.

I particular got the Shrimp and Fish Gumbo which was delicious!  It had a very generous portion of fish in the soup and had a slight kick to it as well.  A majority of my group got sandwiches with the fries.  I dont think anyone one of us knew what we were really getting with these fries.  They were definitely homemade potato wedges and lightly fried.  I got a few stranglers as they serve so many not many people could finish them.  I dont eat fries often and boy were these hard to stop eating.  They are nearly worth a stop to B's on their own.  Pricing was on par with other restaurants I have visited on the island.  I would recommond a stop in here again.

The eatery sits on the backside a bit so you dont really see it from the main road.  It is right near/next to a Longs Drug Store so if all else fails, find it and you will be right on the mark.

My husband and I turned to yelp on our recent vacation to the North Shore, and we are so glad it lead us to this place.

The poke duo is really outstanding! We've tried it all over the island, and this place is definitely the tops. The truffle fries are super good and the portions are really hearty. The garlic edamame is shut-it-down amazing and a ton for the price. The shrimp and corn cakes were also really solidly good.

During happy hour, the prices are great for the quality and portion size. Plus, you can down some beers with the super friendly staff. Lisa was very helpful and friendly.

We were boggled by how all the places around this spot were packed and, yet, this place with superior food and prices was really quite during the afternoon. Give these guys some business so I can get that poke again on our next trip!

The only reason we came here was becasue of Yelp.  It was one of the highest reviewed places in the area.  All I can say is THANK YOU Yelp, we would not have come here on our own.  From the ouside the place is very unassuming and tucked in a corner of a building--I don't think we would have ever noticed it.

But on to the most important thing--the food!!!

Amazing!!!  AHI POKE some of the best we had on the island and we had a lot. The FRIES--I could have made a meal of them.  Seafood Gumbo--oh my god!  We were so full we almost didn't order dessert.  That would have been a huge mistake--the MANGO CHEESCAKE was crazy good.

If you are on the North Shore you must try this place--probably best sit down restaurant on the NS.

I only came here for the cheesecake.  DO IT!  I liked it better than Otto's...sorry Otto, yours is good too!  The difference was that this cheesecake is almost like custard.  It totally melts on your tongue.  Try it.  :)  If you don't like it then save it for me!

While the ambiance wasn't outstanding, it was cozy and fine for a casual night out. The service and food, on the other hand, were far above our expectations. Our server was very friendly, helpful, and attentive. We ordered poke and edamame beans as appetizers, both of which were a big hit with our table of four. For dinner, we had the burger, the BBQ kahlua pork sandwich, and the steak wrap, all of which we would highly recommend. Overall, a very nice experience at a reasonable price!

The rice is haole style, instant from a box! Blech. The beef stew had tender meat mixed into a watery soup that tasted like it was from a can. The lamb dish was overwhelmed with bell peppers, and the crappy rice was served on the side. The truffle fries were awesome, topped with fresh grated parmesan cheese. We were seated outside. As it became dark, we asked our waiter if he could either light the tiki torches, or turn on the extensive line of outdoor lights. He told us he didn't think he could. However, the manager emerged and the entire deck was lit. The manager realized that a bulb was burnt out. He immediatly replaced it! Good man! Thank u.

I'm a long time user of yelp but have never written a review before...why now? Well...the food here is amazing and I was honestly shocked by how good it was. As you've probably read on other reviews, this place used to be a dive bar and still looks like one - but don't let that fool you. When we first walked in I thought we had made a mistake to come here because this place looked like a spot where they would only have deep fried stuff (which I do enjoy - but you know what I mean) to munch on as you watched a game on TV. I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm a fatty and love to eat. During this trip to Hawaii, my girlfriend and I were particularly enamoured with tuna Poke. We've had Poke everyday we've been here and that includes everything from the Foodland kind all the way to high end restaurants where you spend $25 for a little bite. B's by far had the BEST poke and for the amount you get it was also the cheapest at $8.95 for two styles.

I noticed a couple of reviewers mentioned this place was pricey but I would have to disagree. For two entrées and the poke, we spent about that same as you would at a food truck. Unless you are eating at L&L or Ted's Bakery, I don't think you could find anything for a better value.

If you are visiting the area and asking around about where you should eat dinner, they'll probably suggest Haleiwa Joe's Seafood Grill or Jameson's Seafood. In fact, we went to Joe's Grill the first night here because of a recommendation from a guy running a coconut stand. Those places are busy and generally safe for tourist so I can see why the locals would point people that way. They are similar to the Olive Garden or Cheesecake Factory...you won't be blown away but you probably won't be too disappointed either. I would suggest skipping those places and coming to B's instead. They don't have the views like Jameson's or Joe's but the food is way better.

This place is ran by a couple of hauli guys who genuinely enjoy food. I had the pork chops and Tallie had the seared ahi. Both were delicious (order both meals on the rare side). The bar was not packed but fairly busy and we were able to get our food quickly. If you're looking for a place to catch a game on ESPN or enjoy a great meal - You should go to B's.

This place DOESN'T get the props it deserves, it is a PRIME location with tons of parking, but since it took a while to get the liquor license, it really cost them a bit of time to catch on in a row of liquor licensed eateries in Haleiwa.

But now they are caught up!

I LOVE sitting on the PATIO in the fresh air, because there you can really people watch on the riff raff that comes in and out of Longs!
Be prepared for a rather foul smell that seemingly permeates the air incessantly, very much like a broken sewer system running amok in the streets, but let's get back to the food shall we?

Again, I am a vegetarian so the menu is RATHER limited for me. But I go there as a little break from running errands and to sit for the outside patio experience.

    V's faves:
the TRUFFLE FRIES (very incredibly tasty!) now, mind you they are fries with truffle OIL (imported from France) NOT friends made OF truffles, for that would surely run you MORE than the $5 or so per plate!
The portion is enough for one, or to share for TWO.

I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND: the MANGO CHEESECAKE, made only every few days and fresh in their kitchen! SO once they are out...THEY ARE OUT!
But it is 'to die for', and then you should have someone bring you back to life and you should order another slice!

As for the WAIT STAFF: it is the entire family that owns and runs it, and for the most part one or all are there amongst the friendly wait staff that is there the second you drop your fork! They even have time to stand and chat personally with you, which is refreshing, rather than someone that is walking off while you are still biting off your last syllable!

I have gone there at least 4 times now, and I will go back many more!

Love this place! My friends and I stopped in for lunch and was immediately greeted by the staff. I definitely got a good north shore vibe from the moment I walked in. We ordered a bunch of food to share and I loved all of it! Their ahi salad was bomb, the wings were tasty, their burger was amazing, the edamame was a great starter, and the crab cakes were definitely my favorite! It's always nice to have new places to go to on the island and it's especially nice when they have killer food and service! I will definitely be going back to B's Bar & Grinds and recommend it to everyone!!

The staff was attentive and polite! Must tries include the ahi salad with mango vinegrette, actually any of the salads and the fish and chips. Everything is reasonably priced and right now its BYOB which works out since its right next to Longs! We had no room left for dessert but the last visit included a mango cheesecake that was pretty good!

In town recently and trying to go to a different restaurant, but they were already closed for the night, so we ended up at B's per the local Yelp search, and I'm so glad we did.  We enjoyed some tasty shrimp/corn cakes as an appetizer, I ordered the lamb and my husband the fish and chips, but we ended up switching meals and both were happy with our food.  Our waitress was adorable and friendly.  Her husband is the co-owner and they couldn't have been nicer.  It is important to support family-owned local establishments like this one and I hope B's is very successful!  They were getting their liquor license two days after our visit, which I assume will help.  Give them a try if you're in the area!

Fantastic food!  It's BYOB right now, but there is a Longs in the parking lot. Started with the corn cakes, could have been a bit crispier but fabulous flavor. Husband had the gumbo, said it was some of the best he's had at a restaurant.  I had the mahi mahi fish & chips that were fabulous!  Friends had the steak & shrimp special that was also fabulous. They saved the best part for last, dessert. The 4 of us split a huge slice of cheesecake that was to die for.  Not sure why the bad reviews from other previous guests. Our overall experience was great, service & food. We will definitely be back!

I visit the North Shore often and was excited to hear about a new dining option in Haleiwa! This place is great! I had the poke and quesadilla...fabulous! Their truffle fries are possibly the best fries I've ever had too :) The owners were even there to say hello to guests which I thought was really nice. I will definitely be going back again and again.

To B's or Not to B's, that is the question. Sadly the answer is NOT to B's!

Like other reviewers, we too were rooting for this place but ultimately we don't get all the hype. After years of avoiding the dump Kainoa's that this place used to be called, we were hopeful when new ownership took over and while things have improved, overall the vibe from this place is still more bad than good.

We kept trying to give this place a chance even after several disappointing experiences because we felt so sorry for these new owners every time we walked by and saw B's Bar and Grinds nearly empty while one of our favorite restaurants Opal's next door was booming with business, packed full with a line outside waiting.

Now to be completely honest we did luck out with a couple of dishes (one of which they immediately took off the menu), but overall it has been very OVERPRICED and that is the biggest problem with this place. When you order something you're taking a big gamble that it will be ok and at the prices they're charging, after a few bad experiences, we're just not willing to gamble any more.

The first pretty AWFUL thing we had there was their Chicken Basilica Pasta for $15. Now I would have thought this would be impossible to ruin, but B's rude and arrogant chef found a way. The pesto cream sauce was completely flavorless. The tomatoes he used are what we Star Trek fans call "replicator" tomatoes! They don't taste anything like the real thing. And the plain boring black olives out of a can and cheap waxy tasting Parmesan cheese didn't add a thing to a dish that was so dead with flavor it needed to be put out of its misery.

The next time we had the Fish and Chips and it was just ok. For $17 we expected something special. The truffle fries we upgraded to for $2 more were bland enough that we had to put more salt on them which shouldn't have been necessary considering they were coated with Parmesan cheese. Unfortunately the Parmesan cheese tasted like the powdery cheap kind out of a carton.

And the ghastly sewage smell as we ate the Fish and Chips on their outdoor patio was disgusting!

Another night we went just to get some appetizers and even though there were only two other tables with two people at each table, we waited more than half an hour just to get an order of expensive truffle fries and some edadame. You know something is wrong when it's peak dinner time on a weekend and even though there's only a handful of diners you have to wait that long just for appetizers.

The last straw was when the chef/owner promised us two days in a row that he would make a chocolate cake that we were interested in trying and then both days blew us off and didn't follow through even though we rearranged our schedules to be there for it and reserved a piece. When we called and left a message, our phone call was not returned and when we emailed to voice our disappointment, we were again blown off with rudeness and arrogance by Chef Rob even after we'd been extra nice and continued to try to support his business.

What's the B's in B's Bar and Grinds stand for ?

    The food could B better.
    The service could B better.
    The prices could B better.

p.s. The owner can say whatever untrue things he likes, but every word of this review is sincere and honest.

It's so nice to see a place that has North shore soul, family-working-togther spirit, and some creative dishes still made in a real 'comfort food' kind of way.

Originally I was not sold on the Hawaiian Cuban sandwich seeing that pulled pork AND Portuguese sausage was paninied with a pickle, Cuban sando style.  But I was mistaken!  That flavorfull dense little pocket of power really hit the spot after a 3 hour surf.

Returning another time, I tried the gumbo and was very satisfied, but it was not spicy.  The server was happy to get me several new flavors of Tabasco to try, including a 'Buffalo Sauce' Tabasco!  I gotta get me some of that stuff for home!

B's Bar and Grinds is comfort, priced well food that is not fancy, and is not Waikiki.  But it is good.  Go.  Go two or three times so they can afford some more decor in the future.  Decor is the only reason B's does not get  all 5 stars.  Food is 41/2 now, I'm sure 5 will be soon.

I really was rooting for this place. I'm so confused with the other reviews, to be honest. It makes me feel like maybe I ordered the wrong things? The gumbo came with nothing in it! I tried spooning around and I got a few onions. I couldn't believe I paid that much for soup, white rice and a few onions. The shrimp and corn cakes were not good. At all. The burger was okay. And the gyoza was cold, like it was still thawing. I give one star, now. And I am super hesitant to give it another chance. But everyone in B's is super friendly. I think I'll wait a while . . .

My husband and I were getting pretty sick of the usually conversation about dining options in Haleiwa- now we always know where to go! The service has always been stellar and the food onolicious.

Our first visit: I ordered the beef stew- perfect consistency, lots of tender beef and veggies. Rice and bread on the side. Delicious. My husband got the special of the day which was fish...oh my god. It was out of control delicious- it came atop some mashed okinawan sweet potatoes and with some veggies on the side. It was so good that I still dream about it.

2nd time: I got the edamame- super ono- but be prepared to smell like garlic for the rest of the week. Actually, I'd recommend it to anyone who's fighting a cold. My husband got the burger which was awesome.

3rd time: Husband and I shared the fish-n-chips, upgraded to the truffle fries. The fish was obviously super fresh, and the batter wasn't too thick. It was so awesome that we had to order another side of fish- they hooked us up! I don't even like mac salad, but I tried theirs and was way impressed. Fathers in law shared the Shrimp-n-Fish gumbo and loved it.

You've gotta save room for dessert- the lemon bars are better than any I've ever had (don't tell my mom or grandma)

The owners are super nice and will come up and talk to you if its not too busy. Do yourself a favor and check them out!!

**For some reason most of the reviews are on the filtered list.  Please see that list too!**

I stopped by tonight to grab a quick bite to eat.  I sat at the bar with several other regular patrons (5 to be exact).  There were people eating outside and in the other part of the restaurant.  New people arrived and asked what we liked, and we all gave our opinions, which was basically everything on the menu.  I had the hamburger and it was amazing!

As for Miss Rebecca S.,  bring your nose down, north shore needs creative fresh cooking at reasonable non-tourist prices.  Who cares about the decor, that will come in time!   Do you realize the restaurant just opened  a few weeks ago, which is why all of the reviews were just posted?

Our family of 5 visiting from California found B's after it was recommended to us by a friend. Hungry we were greeted and seated right away. Everyone loved their choice. Must are the truffle fries!  Mahi Mahi fish and chips, ahi salad, were some of our favorites. My son loved his burger too.
Take the time to find this little hidden gem in Halewai next to the Longs drug store.
