Have had several bad experiences here. Very mediocre drinks. There's one particular male bartender here who is terrible. He gets very drunk and messy while working. I've seen him threaten several people. He gave me the wrong change and when I told him about it, he told me to eff off. So many other bars is SLO, I'd go to another.
Review Source:This review is for the bar, I have never tried the food. I have come here several times on our trips to SLO. It's usually a place where we start off drinking.
I came here a few times with my BF & had a great time- the regular pub experience. Bartenders have always been really nice & attentive. Drinks are strong & reasonably priced. I came here once by myself & had a great time. My most recent trip to SLO, I came here on a Sat night & got there early and had a seat at the bar. When the place filled up the bartender was still super attentive & we had a great time.
When we returned the next day the same attentive bartender was there & as she was taking our order this incredibly rude patron came up & yelled out her order- interrupting us. My friend & I were so confused with this person's rudeness that we gave each other a WTF look which turned into shit talking that resulted in an altercation that I am way too old to be part of.
I love SLO, I understand it's a college town but it the real world or grown up world you don't talk shit and get into bar fights. Great place but with asshole patrons like that I am sorry to say my tourist dollars won't be spent there again.
Ahh, Buffalo, my home away from home. Correction- Buffalo IS my home, that other place where I keep my bed and clothing is my home away from home. That's how great this place is.
The Bartenders. I could end this list right here with that alone. They are all incredible. Everyone is super friendly and totally cool. They are all what make Buffalo so cool and a great place to come back to every day.
The Food - *Everything* on the menu is phenomenal. It's pretty extensive for a Pub too. Some of my favorites are: the pastrami sandwich, holy shit, it'll make you jizz in your pants. The turkey burger is amaaaazing, albondigas soup (best when *smokin'* hot), shepards pie, spaghetti and meatballs, fish tacos, turkey avocado melt... Â All of it, top notch. Every day there are a few daily specials (items not normally on the menu, advertised on a board outside the door) you can't go wrong with them either.
Trivia - This is too much fun. Four rounds with prizes for each round (drink-offs decide ties). Prizes can be hats, shirts, pint glasses, beers... The categories vary, as each round's host comes up with them on their own (I host one round each week- Not an employee, just a regular). Free to play, but no shouting out the answers! For god's sake, do not shout out the answer! It's a real dick move, no matter if it's right or wrong. It's easy to get excited, but please, contain yourself.
The People - Lots of people at Buffalo are regulars, but don't think a regular customer base is in any way exclusionary- Everyone is really friendly and everyone is welcome. So come in for your first time, strike up a conversation with the person next to you at the bar and have a great time.
The Music - Thurs/Fri/Sat late night there is normally a DJ. Saturdays around supper (my favorite time to be there) a guy plays saxophone along with whatever is on the stereo, he's very good, and it adds a real nice atmosphere to an evening supper at the bar. During the day/afternoon the music comes from either XM radio or the bartender's personal mp3 player. There are 3 TV's on the wall, normally showing sports. It's muted w/ closed captions when the music is on.
Theme Nights - Every Thursday night is a themed night, announced on Facebook a week in advance. The bartenders dress up to match it and many customers will too. Beach Bash, Sports and Short Shorts, Superheros/SuperVillians...
Buffalo Pub and Grill is THE best bar in SLO. It's the total package. Atmosphere, bartenders, food, drinks... I don't go anywhere else.
Oh buffalo. Your staff may have changed, you interiors were updated, your food menu got delicous but you shall always in my heart be la fandango... that bar you start the evening/afternoon/morning off at before proceeding to dispurse up and down the street.
I stoppe din here on my lil self proclaimed pub crawl when I was in slo and it gave me warm happy feelings. That may have been the ridiculously strong blueberry and soda the newish bartender gave me, or the delicous young mann sitting next to me asking me if he smelled like ocean water. But I digress (though seriously when did 21yr old boys start looking so damn good?)
So there is one thing about the food here. You can't go wrong. The cooks are still the same and I got all excited because I used to eat her eon a regular basis and wanted to get one of my speical dishes again :)
Their burgers are delicious. When you order medium rare you get medium rare, but not to the point where the bottom half of the bun is swimming in juices and falling apart.
Their fish tacos with extra sauce are also really really really good (can you tell I was a fatty this trip?)
OVerall too they have great prices for slo where you can get some places taht jack up the price for small portions and sub par food.
Overall buffalo, you are still a happy spot for me to park my butt at the bar and enjoy an afternoon.
I have written many a review about buffalo... but I am  updating yet again. I LOVE Buffalo, it is probably my favorite bar in town. The reason for this, is the people who work there! They have some of the BEST bartenders in SLO town and the bouncers are pretty great too. Even before this place become my favorite, everyone I met remembered me and made me feel so welcome.
The reason this place is getting 2 stars instead of 5 is because of how the employees are treated. I have seen first hand, one of the male owners get in arguments with employees while they are working (in front of customers). I have also heard numerous similar stories from other customers.
While the employees make the place what it is and keep me coming back, the owners are the ones who churn a profit and it is becoming more and more hard for me to support a place that doesn't treat their employees well, even though I love it so much!
One of my favorite bartenders has already moved on from the place and I fear the others may begin to move along as well (good for them, honestly!). The bar won't be the same without them and I am sure I am not the only one who feels this way.
I've been a fan of Buffalo Pub for a few years now.  The swing shift bartenders always take care of my drink needs, a few favorites being the cucumber strawberry cocktail and Vesna's  creation - The Bad Day.
A few months ago, they shook up their food menu, and since then I've been going multiple times a week to try the daily special and some amazing drinks. Â Their chef creates amazing specials that you wouldn't expect out of the pub, my favorites being the osso bucco style ribs over pasta and the ahi tartar with cilantro, tomato and avocado.
Monday nights at 8:30, they have trivia night - 4 rounds of pitting random knowledge up against your fellow man to win t-shirts and pitchers of beer.
Overall, Buffalo Pub is a fun and relaxed environment with a delightful bar staff, excellent drinks, and amazing dinner specials.
Highly recommended to all!
I've been coming here awhile. Usually have a pretty damned good experience every time. This is due MAINLY to the excellent bartenders and wonderful cooks. Both really know how to take care of a guy. Until recently the tenders were allowed to play their own tunes allowing each of them to interject a bit of their own personality into each time you came in. Now their forced to play that generic xm radio crap. The shots are small now too. Do you really want to have that reputation in this age of social media? Recent changes have made this a less attractive place to come have a beer and chat up the talented ladies behind the bar.
Hey French guy in charge? Quit fucking up my/your bar. Go take a management class you so DESPERATELY need. How you manage to retain such quality people is beyond me especially when you berate them in public. More than once I've wanted to smack you silly and dare you to pick on me instead of the ladies working for you.
OK, sorry about that. Dunno what happened there. ANYWAY...anyway everything I've ever had here be it booze or food has been great!
I highly recommend this joint! And if you see the French dude, tweak him a little bit. He LOVES it!
This bar is loads of fun. Started out here one night when it wasn't very full and was introduced to the flabongo- one of the most hilarious times in my life was seeing that for the first time. Came back here later in the night and the place was packed shoulder-to-shoulder; course that's common with most bars in a college town on a Saturday night.
Review Source:When you walk in you immediately feel like your in a rock'n family pub. Well you are right on. Don't expect to be met at the door by your hostess because she is busy taking care of a packed house. The bar is loaded with all the favorites and Firestone on tap for us brew specialists. I ordered the pastrami on rye and my wife had the French Onion soup and we give both five stars for taste and presentation. Being small in size don't help the noise level, but you soon find yourself part of the problem. We are already planning our next visit.
Review Source:The food was prit-tee darn good if I have to say so myself - especially for a pub. Â The beers on the tap were so-so but the bartender did pour good drinks. Â He also apparently drinks on his shift - so much I guess he "accidently" charged my friend for a drink he said he would comp her.
Fish and Chips, and Steak Frites were yumm.
The atmosphere is very college towny; the girls who frequent the bar look like they belong on the set of "Clueless" with Alicia Sylverstone. Â
Eat here, yes. Â Drink here, yes. Â Party here??? Well, I don't think this is my cup of tea. It's kind of Vanilla. Â ...Yeah... pun intended.
I had the pastrami sandwich this last weekend. Â It was AWESOME. Â Last time I got the chimichurri steak sandwich. Â I think it was just ok.
The waitress / bartender is very friendly. Â A little overly friendly in a 'fishing for a good tip' sort of way, but she manages to pull it off well. Â
Definitely a place I will stop at again when passing through SLO.
We just shared a large, crispy basket of fish and chips with our beer. It was enough for 2 not-so-hungry people. Â I also had a bowl of French onion soup; it was very small but very flavorful. I just wish it wasn't so salty. There's a singer whose voice sounds like Cat Stevens. His folk rock ballads are pretty good. The people here tonight are a mix of screaming girls who are singing along with the performer. Every man in the bar is a prison guard in basic training. That, combined with the skater documentary on the flat screen, would have created a strong atmosphere of testosterone, if it werent for the folk singer. Even the screaming girls are acting like boys.....and it's a Sunday night!
I wonder how rowdy it gets on the weekends.
Took 45 minutes to get my pathetic 8 oz, $7 rubbery salad with 2 chefs working and no one else ordering food. Drinks are a bit more expensive surprisingly than other bars (Ace is $1 more here than MoTav), bar tender forgot to put our order in. Rather boring, broken glasses on at the bar.
Review Source:It's taken me a long time to give Buffalo Pub and Grill a try because I'm being petulant. Â I loved Le Fandango and I'd heard that the same owners had closed that and open Buffalo so that they could attract the Cal Poly crowd--like we need any more college bars in this town!!
Anyway, let's start with the not-so-good stuff. Â The waitress was a ditz. Â She actually pulled up a chair and chatted with us after we had given her our drink order, but before she gave it to the bartender. Â Is it any wonder C's drink was wrong? Â And after that, the drinks weren't very good. Â I guess we should have stuck to beers. Â We got kind of an array of food, and never once was anything cleared from our table. Â We just polished off dinner surrounded by used dishes.
Here's the good stuff: Â the food. Â The guac was great and the chips were good. Â C got a sandwich that he liked and I got enchiladas. Â I know, not quite the thing most people would order in a pub, but they were really good--better than the ones I've gotten in many of SLO's mexican restaurants. Â And here's the best thing: Â the music. Â The last thing I expected from a college bar was great oldies, but I almost started dancing-- Â The James Gang, Â Grand Funk Railroad, Â Traffic!! Â Wow, you just don't hear that stuff enough anymore.
Anyway, it was a warm summer night and we sat by an open window people watching and humming--all in all a pretty good experience.
This was a cool little place. Popped in while in town and waiting for a show to start down the street. The location is great with that in mind.
Had a tuna melt, and it looked yummy, it was good to start off with but after a few bits had me feeling a little blah. My boyfriend had the pulled pork and that was way way better.
For an early wednesday night it was pretty busy, def seems to be a popular spot for locals. for the time and price id say it was a-ok.
Part Evil's Saturday night exploits in downtown SLO included a visit to the Buffalo Pub. Â It was a good time, though perhaps we're being a bit too lenient.
The prices were decent, but not great. Â $60 for 2 "bar food" dinners, 6 pints of beer and a couple of shots. Â Not too bad.
The food was a bit below decent. Â The sycophant with me has a salad and it looked good, but Evil had the steak sandwich. Â The fries were very good, but the sandwich...not so much. Â The meat was barely cooked. Â We are Evil, so the raw meat wasn't a bother, but it is really difficult to bite into an undercooked steak sandwich. Â Try it for yourself if you're not sure....
The saving grace...and the reason this place gets 4 stars...is due to the bar-tender. Â
Number one...she was very prompt and provided excellent service.
Number two...she was very nice.
Number three...she was super-duper hot.
My bff and I were in SLO last weekend celebrating her birthday, so naturally we wanted to check out the bar scene and get our party on. We had two full nights of bar experimenting downtown and all in all it was pretty average. We have both been spoiled by better bar scenes throughout college and now, living in the bay. However, there was one sight to see here at Buffalo that is the most memorable moment of the whole downtown. Although, Im still not too sure about exactly what happened.
There I am minding my own business when I spot 3 bartenders at the end of the bar splitting up what looks like cocaine on the bar with a credit card while another proceeds to pour shots and cut up a lime. Of course I am intrigued so I continue to peep. Then all 3 snort a line, take a shot, and squirt lime juice in their eyes. After having several drinks myself, you can imagine my confusion. What was that? Was the coke actually salt? But why would they want so much of it and use a straw? A tequila shot gone bad? Was I too far gone to really know what I saw? I don't know if I will ever know the truth.
Tips for TaTa's? Â More like tits n TaTa's!
I came here with a collegue the other night while on a business trip. It just so happened to be a "Tips for TaTa's" fundraiser for breast cancer. Â Let's just say it would be an absolute shame if some of those patrons suffered from the disease. Cause they sure had it going on...and they weren't ashamed to flaunt it
The drinks were decent. I see thata lot of reviews recommend the pastrami sandwich. Â We didn't eat. Â Just drank. The bartender poured a decent drink, and the prices were close to average.
We scored and ended up sitting next to two single cuties who were interested in talking. Â We'll be seeing them again while we are in town. Let's just leave it at that.
This is definitely a place where you need to know what to get, so I will tell you: French onion soup or the Pastrami Sandwich. Â If you stray from those you will most likely get your standard bar food. Â I rarely ever eat pastrami, but this sandwich is seriously incredible. Â The meat melts in your mouth and the rustic bread is a perfect match. Â It is not the healthiest item on the menu, but pastrami never is.
This is also my favorite bar on the weekends. Â It gets a little crowded during peak hours, but its a well balanced crowd and you never have to wait too long for a drink.
FOOD REVIEW:
Ah, back in the day of Monday Lunches. This was one destination because we wanted to check out a cute girl that worked here, but sadly she was not in that day. On to the food.. I had the cheese steak sandwich and lunch date had the pastrami. Taste was spot on but they were both SO SMALL for $10 and $12. Fries or a salad are included in that price, but still, not worth it. If prices were lower I could definitely see this as a place I would frequent in my downtown lunches, but eh..
Also on the menu are salads, a few burgers and a bunch of appetizers. Still pricey. They really can't afford to knock off a dollar or two here and there? Bah.
BAR REVIEW:
I heart Buffalo at night! Even when packed it's still more low-key than the other bars in the vicinity. I like the bartenders here, too. Nobody's too flashy or show-off-y or big-mouthed, shut-up-and-make-me-my-damn-drinks-y. Fair prices. Usually a good mix of music playing. Yay!
I gave Buffalo Pub & Grill a shot at the behest of a friend who claimed that they had the "Best. Pastrami. Sandwich. Ever." Â Who could ignore a claim like that?
The lunchtime atmosphere seems pretty low-key. Maybe we went on an off-day, but the place seemed pretty laid-back and not too busy. Â It's definitely a bar so you can get your beer/cocktail on while you wait for the "Best. Pastrami. Sandwich. Ever."
When the sandwich in question arrived, I was very pleased by its presentation (I'll attach a photo after this review). Â It was definitely tasty, but I felt the caramelized onions dominated the overall experience. Â It didn't rock my world.
All in all, I will definitely want to explore their other menu items at some point when I feel like spending a little more money than usual for lunch.
Perfect when you need to cool your jets, enjoy a great sandwich and a cocktail.
Now, I personally have difficulty shopping. I always manage to convince myself that I don't need whatever it is I have in my hands, or that maybe I can find it cheaper elsewhere. Buffalo Pub and Grill offered an oasis where we spent less than $40 for two great lunches and a total of three drinks.
The Marinated Chicken sandwich was on a great slab of ciabatta with a perfect pesto ($10.50). The boy ordered the Pub Cheesesteak and devoured all of its cheesiness meaty goodness in record time. And damned if they didn't have my favorite kind of french fries: thin cut, not overdone and with a great season-salt all over. Salty deliciousness!
My two Malibu and Diet Cokes (seemed like an appropriate day-drinking cocktail) were $5 each ... and even better than that... they allowed me to head out to the stores and buy some hot jeans!
Buffalo isn't a super exciting place for a night out, but a nice place to chill with some friends or even by yourself to grab some drinks and/or food -- a.k.a. the perfect pace for SLO town. Even with hookups from my bartender friend Natalie, I still spent about $25 on a meal and 2 beers, which is a little steep. The food is all delicious though, with some more original selections in addition to your standard pub fare. There are some nice booth seating options, plus plenty of stools along the lengthy bar. High def TVs behind the barkeeps show various sporting events, but they'll change it to anything you want if it's not super busy. As long as Natalie is working here, or if I find Black Sheep and Frog & Peach to be too crowded, I will keep coming back when visiting town.
Review Source:Good staff, good basic food. I really miss Le Fandango, but money makes the world go round and the kids love their cocktails and beers.
We like to call it Black Sheep 2.0. But the original version is better in this case. Not a bad place to watch a game in the afternoon and grab some food. Get's really busy late night, but can be fun.
Cheers.
Buffalo Pub & Grill replaced one of my favorite restaurants in town (Le Fandango), so we gave it a whirl.
My extra dirty martini was $9.50, which is pretty steep for SLO, and it didn't quite taste right. Â How do you mess up vodka and olive juice? Â And did they accidently give me a well vodka? Â Because I had a major headache the next day.
The service was fine, but the food: bad. Â Chicken strips were terrible (Firestones are way better) and the pulled pork sandwich was just ok. Â I thought for the prices that we would have gotten a little bit better than bar food. Â Heck, I can get GOOD bar food at Downtown, Black Sheep or Firestones for much cheaper.
I overheard the bartender raving about the pastrami sandwich, so if you find yourself here on one of those group birthdays that you can't get out of, maybe that is the way to go.
We went on a Friday night at 7, and the place was only about half full. Â If I had to guess, this one will go the way of many of those downtown bars that have failed before.
