Hushpuppies-generous serving, good flavor. Shrimp-light, fresh, tender, delicious. Decent salad bar with enough choices except for one glaring omission...NO BLUE CHEESE dressing. How do you serve hot wings w/o it??? The one thing we were really shocked about though was the catfish. It seemed fresh enough, but the batter was flavorless. No spice, litle to no seasoning. Very disappointed in the catfish...which is weird considering it's a catfish place. Next time...shrimp only for me.
Review Source:We were hungry after our boat tour on Caddo Lake and found nothing else open on our way toward LA. Â We had to stop here even though it was late afternoon.
Food was more than ample. Â The portions are huge as is the restaurant. Â My fried catfish was OK though I would have liked more fish and less breading. Â He liked his fried shrimp. Â
Our visit started with complimentary hush puppies which we liked. Â Salad bar was included with beans, potato salad, and slaw along with plenty of fixings for the meal. Â
One mistake we made was ordering the armadillo eggs appetizer. Â Not good at all.
I love the friendly staff and prompt seating. The atmosphere is very country and home like. I absolutely love their sweet tea and cajun catfish. Â (and you can get all you cant eat, SOLD!!!) They have a salad bar that comes with your meal. Â The beans and coleslaw have amazing flavor. I would try this palce out if you are passing through.
Review Source:Friends and I came here, only after the power had gone out in Karnack at the River Bend restaurant (It was an area blackout, just the luck!) Our waitress at David Beard's was great! Very efficient and very polite! We had a party of eight and we all ordered fried catfish fillets, some ordered them "Cajun" and others just plain. I also ordered fried "Cajun" shrimp with my fillets. The shrimp was decent, although I've had much better, but the catfish...the reason this place was even built, it even has it in its' name, was not very good at all! The fillets were super crunchy inside and out, almost like pork rinds! Seriously! It was just not very good. Everything else that we ate, was okay...well, the hush puppies were way overcooked also to a very dark brown and mega-greasy, but other than that, salad bar was fresh, beans were good, just the staples of a catfish restaurant, the fish and the hush puppies left so much more to be desired. And I hate to say it, but one of the ladies in our group actually threw up in the restroom before we even left the restaurant. She said the food made her sick. I've only been to David Beard's once before and it didn't seem that bad, but this was just not good at all. I would be willing to give it another chance, but I don't know if and when that chance will come when there's so much other competition in the immediate area: River Bend, Jim's, and the newly-renovated, soon to be open Big Pines! I'm sure David Beard's will be fine without our business, but I'm sure we won't be back anytime soon, if at all.
Review Source:David Beards is my all time favorite catfish.
This location is a large natural wood restaurant with Texas decor, a porch and terracing goldfish ponds that stream into a large pond on site.
The local fav is the all you can eat fried catfish filets. It comes with fries and salad bar. Beans are on the salad bar.
The all you can eat catfish is about $10.50 but you can get a the smaller lunch plate with 5 pieces of fish even at supper time if you ask.
David Beard's Catfish Village is a decent stop off the highway in Waskom, but the catfish is marginal at best. They definitely spent more money on the atmosphere than the food. I have tried both the fried and the baked catfish, and both are just about average. Believe it or not, the best tasting dish there are the chicken tenders, which is sad considering the name is the catfish village.
The good side of Catfish Village however is that you could easily feed 100's of your friends at once!
