A filth hole best describes it. Really dirty floors. Â The food is common and most straight from the freezer. Main salad ingredient is iceberg lettuce...need I say more. This place needs someone that gives a hoot, it sure isn't "Chef" Tippy as I questioned him ... he responded by saying "people around here like iceberg"...who's he kidding.
The proof of his failing ... he closed his doors for good, unfortunately where are reports he skipped town without paying his utilities. I personally will not support any person of this caliber, leaving the rest of us to make up his bill. Â He supposedly has opened another place outside of Decatur on Route 36 ... I would assume until his first utility goes unpaid.
I have been here several times for lunch and I have always enjoyed the food. The Boss sandwich is really good and the Big Mouth fish sandwiches really good as well. Also, make sure you try the sweet potato fries. They are the best I've ever had.
Having said all that, I went tonight with a friend for dinner. This was the first time I've been there for a meal other than lunch. The food was good but there wasn't much of a selection. I had the Bourbon chicken and my friend had a salad and requested grilled chicken to go on top of it. The waiter forgot her chicken, so she had the part of the salad without it until it finally arrived. Seemed like it took a long time to get the chicken out.
By itself, the food is worthy of at least four stars. However I'm giving it three stars due to the staff. I'm sorry, but it just seemed like they didn't care. One of the cooks stood at a table near ours visiting with some people and eating what looked like a cup of pudding. Was he on the clock? He went right back to work after standing there for a while. Discipline seemed a little lax. Does anyone work here who happens to be over 30?
Maybe it's just me but I expect a little bit more decorum from a restaurant with the title "Chef" in the name...and not proceeded by the word "Burger."
My daughter visited this restaurant and said, "Dad, you have to go. You're going to love it."
She was right!
This was my first of what will be many visits to Chef Tippy's in Sullivan Illinois. It's about a half an hour's drive from where I live, but it was so worth it. We went early and were quickly seated, but the restaurant quickly filled up.
The décor is wonderful and the staff is very friendly and also very attentive. Our drinks were constantly refilled and there was a driven desire to insure that our experience at this restaurant was a good one. (They were successful in their mission)
We began with salads and they were fresh and tasty. The dressings were wonderful. For the main course... My wife had the Sully's Chicken and she let me have a taste. It was great! I had the Ribeye Steak and not only was it perfectly prepared, but it was one of the most flavorful steaks I've had in a very long time. It was charred to perfection. We both had the twice baked potatoes. We opted to have them "loaded" and that was a good decision. It added that little extra to the already wonderful flavor.
We usually do not add desert, but we gave in to the Raspberry Angelfood Cake. This cake was a delightful end to a memorable meal. The cake was served with berries and what had to be homemade sweet cream. Awesome!
The people at the table behind me had travel more than 100 miles to eat at Chef Tippy's. I heard them talking about how far they had come and I thought "Why" Why would anyone travel that far to eat a meal? Then we were served and I discovered that my 30 minute journey was a small price to pay. I will become very familiar with the road between my home and Chef Tippy's!
