I love this pub. My roommates and I have been looking for a local bar/pub to hang out at and since we live in Kerrisdale there is not a whole lot around.
Our expectations were not set high as we live in an older community, but we had a blast at the british pub atmosphere.
Sinade, our waitress, was absolutely awesome and really made the best first impression for a bar one could have. While we have gone back a handful of times since our first visit (keep in mind we only started going like two weeks ago) we have yet to see her and hope to see her again soon.
Sad to hear it is closing down pretty soon though.
Things ain't like they used to be - least not at this pub.
I first ate here on a St. Patrick's Day evening, going there for dinner - but that was six or seven years ago. I recall it being pretty good.
That was not the case in my recent trip to the pub. To quote another musical icon, Bob Dylan, the times they are a'changin' ... but I don't think that's always a good thing and it certainly was not with this pub.
During my recent visit there, service was fairly prompt - but it was a Saturday afternoon, and not all that busy, so that's a wash.
The small glass of Kilkenney Irish Cream Ale was good. But that's where it ended.
I ordered a small bowl (or cup) of the soup of the day, beef vegetable soup, accompanied by a toasted BLT.
The BLT was pedestrian - it was okay, but I could have got a much better sandwich two doors down at Subway. (Kind of says it all, doesn't it?) In fact, I had debated going to the ubiquitous sandwich chain but thought a "real" sandwich and a bowl of soup would be tastier and healthier. Doh!
The soup was pretty bland, although the chunks of beef were a decent size.
But what really knocked this eatery from a 2 down to a 1 was the odour.
As I was being seated, an odour reminiscent of ... well, urine, wafted through the air.
It didn't get any better after sitting down. I probably should have left, but I felt a bit embarrassed to do so after being seated and placing an order - and I hoped maybe it would get better.
It didn't.
Now in all fairness, there's no way to prove it was actually, well, you know... but that's what it smelled like, to me. Now, they do have an outdoor patio, and the windows were wide open with a breeze from outside blowing into the inside dining area, so that's probably where the smell originated from. Maybe it was due to the rain, it had somehow produced an unpleasant musty smell, and that's what was assailing my nostrils.
No one else seemed to notice it, but the crowd eating there consisted completely of people in their 70's and maybe their sense of smell was not as strong as it once was (?) I do have a very sensitive sniffer - but that's one of the reasons I enjoy good food so much.
So if the smell is bad, the food is not going to taste as well as it might, at least not for me. And the food here was just not that good to begin with.
Pity. I did enjoy it the first time I went. This was so sub-par I would not dream of going back. Maybe this was an anomaly, but I'm not going to spend more money trying to find out.
Of course, according to that iconic British band the Beatles, money can't buy you love; and apparently, in this British-style pub, it can't even buy you a decent lunch.
This is a lovely British-style pub in Kerrisdale. There are lots of classic things on the menu like Toad in the Hole and Irish Stew. Dinner here was decently priced and good, especially on a cold day (I had the Irish Stew and did not regret it). The beer selection was also great. I love how this place feels so much like a local pub. People come here to watch the game or talk, and some were quite obviously regulars. It was nice and quiet, so it was really easy to hold a conversation. The servers were very friendly and quick. Overall, a pleasant place and I will be back.
Review Source:I came here with a group of girls on a Saturday night. Â It's a small pub that is dark, dingy, and distinctly British. Â We were easily able to find a big table since this place was pretty quiet. Â We had already eaten dinner so we ordered some drinks and desserts. Â
Looking at the menu, there is a lot of standard British pub food, including steak & kidney pie, mushy peas, and bangers and mash. Â For the more heart healthy, there is also standard restaurant food such as a cajun chicken wrap, chicken caesar salad, and veggie stir fry. Â The prices seem pretty standard for a pub (~$10 for a meal).
My friend ordered the sticky toffee pudding for dessert so I stole a bite of hers. Â Although it wasn't the best sticky toffee pudding I've ever had, it was only $6. Â I'm tempted to come back and try the english bread pudding.
There is a nice selection of premium microbrew and imported beers, and a decent wine selection. Â If you like lighter beers, you're out of luck. Â I ordered a cosmopolitan off of their martini menu, and it was alright. Â If you come here on a Friday, martini's are $6.25.
Overall, this was a cute little British pub, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to come here again.
Always drove by here but never stopped by until now. Â It's actually not a bad place at all!
The inside is definite cozy with a "British pub" feel. Â The ambience wasn't too loud at all, which is a welcome change. Â Other places have a tendency to blast music.
The beers are quite small though. Â I'd estimate them to be around 400mL. Â 1516 was on special today. Â We also had some bruschetta. Â It was covered in cheese, tomatoes, and onions, and was very tasty and crispy.
I think I will be back more often. Â This may be the only watering hole in the Kerrisdale area.
Yes an ole English pub. Â I think they have bubble n squeek, but know that they do have other English breaky fares to eat. Â Bangers and mash. Â How classic and artery clogging is that? Â You have to admit that with a pint of ale or better yet, Guiness, the food does go down the palate rather nicely. Â At that, any time of day too!
Thursdays was Roast Lamb and Fridays was Prime Rib with a big lump Yorkshire pudding. Â I love Yorkshire pudding. I only get it once or twice a year.
'If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?" (Pink Floyd)
Played the ole 8 ball to find out what the future lies for me. Â It lied. Â
or maybe I asked the question wrong?
The martini's I heard were pretty good and there was a special pale ale on tap that was decent.
The fish and chips was just a bit below average. Â The fish being Halibut, was a bit dry. Â The chips were ok of which I only ate a few.
My friends had bumbleberry pie with ice cream, but they said it wasn't all that good. Too bad.
I wonder......if there is a place that makes diabetic friendly pies out there.
.................................I'm up for that.
For me, I ate everything that I shouldn't, but did.
but now I can say after being here more than a few times.
I can honestly say that I like this place very much.
It's out of the downtown core, it's a neighbourhood pub and the staff are all friendly and the service is good.
You don't get the rowdy young bunch. You get something more mature.
Come have a pint here, a bit of grub and before you know it.
Bob's your uncle! Â He really is!
This pub is quite enigmatic. To me, when you enter a pub you should think of drinking first and food secondary. Cheshire Cheese, although pub-like in decor, reads as a restaurant that serves drinks and , unfortunately the food is mediocre at best. Their menu is very extensive but they don't appear to do any of it really well from what I have tasted. If you come in just wanting to tip a few pints you will be surrounded by a bunch of diners which kind of ruins it for me.
Review Source:A friend of mine drove up from Seattle and arrived in Vancouver around 10:00 last night. Â I live in Kerrisdale and there isn't a lot of places to go for a drink in this quiet part of town so we went to Cheshire. Â
My friend and fellow yelper, Nam, wrote a great review about this place a couple months ago (check it out). Â To summarize, the beer is good, the service is good but the food isn't so good. Â Three Stars.
I like to hang out at pubs with my friends, this is one of the local ones on West side we drop by every so often as there's not too many places to go to in Kerrisdale. Â Nice to sit in the patio for a Kilkenny or Guiness, good atmosphere and friendly service. Â
Food is only ok, nothing to write home about or recommend. Â I had the Halibut & Chips, the chips were really dry so couldn't finish it. Â Say no to peas, they just mound your plate with salty peas. Â A friend had the Sheperd's Pie, and apparently it was quite tasty.
Suggest: Come in for some brewskies with the mates and catch a game. Â Try some of the English dishes or chow down on bar appies. Â You'll enjoy the atmosphere as much as we do.
When you walk into the Cheshire you immediately realize that the place is truly a British pub. The decor has the same feel as some of the traditional pubs I went into the last time I was in England. Even the menu options are in line with a British pub.
Unfortunately so is to the food. While the pricing is cheap, the food is nothing special to speak of. I order the bangers & mash, hoping it would be as good as the last time I had it in London. I was unfortunately disappointed. Their British pub theme does seem to extend even to the taste of the food.
But with the servers being nice, it not being a crowded pub, and the food cheap, I would not have major qualms going back.
We had such a bad experience, I was motivated to join Yelp just to tell you about it.
Our experience as it was way overpriced for such poor quality food. What we ordered did not match what the menu said we would get. Perhaps they were cutting corners to save money because they seemed to  leave out the more expensive ingredients, but ones that would have made the dishes interesting and worth paying for!  When you order Chicken Walnut Salad...you expect chicken and walnuts right?
On our visit, poor quality food matched poor service. At a minimum, I expect my waiter to come back after the meal is served to ask "how is everything?". Never happened. When you can eat the whole bad meal, missing ingredients at all, without ever seeing your waiter again...that is a place you don't go back to.
I tried to very politely explain my concerns as we were leaving, and the staff could not possibly express more disinterest. Â
Too many good restaurants to waste your time and money at this one.
"The Cheese" is a warm and cozy pub in the heart of ye olde village of Kerrisdale. It's not cool, but it's not trying to be anything it's not, so I like it. They've got cheap drink specials on different days of the week. Sit back, relax and enjoy some mild times hanging with the oldies of Kerrisdale.
