It's been almost six months since I'd stopped here and vowed to get the chicken that's one of the mainstays in Birnamwood.
The bowling alley right off the east end of the bar was one of the more interesting small town chrarcteristics of the place which they've unfortunately almost entirely walled off. I'm not sure that the remodeling is responsible for the ruby red painted cieling around the inverted barrel-shaped wood directly over the bar but it is responsible for scaling the deer racks back from several to two. Too bad, I missed the deer.
The clientele at the end of the bar were retiress and I know that they're you're regular customers but you can't all but ignore the guy waiting for his chicken.
The chicken is broasted. It wasn't bad but it wasn't anything to write home about either. The bird was moist but the breading was nondescript and I was disappointed that the thickly cut American fries were fried, just barely, and not done on a flat top. I did like the creamy slaw.
The drinks are still inexpensive and the chicken is pretty much the only show in town. "That must've hit the spot." from the waitress after I'd finished everything and the other customers had cleared out was a little less attention than I'd like.
When you see the GIANT CHICKEN STATUE on the side of the road you just know this place loves chicken and cooks a mean bird. After reading reviews we just had to see for ourselves We ordered a full bird which was served with dressing, gravy, broasted potato, cole slaw, cranberry sauce and a slice of buttered rye. We savored every bite of this crunchy, crispy, moist and flavorful bird and the sides. Alas, I could not give 5 stars as the cranberry sauce was from a can. Cranberry sauce is so easy to make and if it's a part of your daily rotation you should be making it fresh every day. Total for the meal and an iced tea for $20 bucks! I wish they'd open a place in Wausau and show Lee's how it;s done!!!! Our server was attentive without being annoying. She used her ESP to divine that I would need a take out container. Can't wait to come back.
Review Source:This is the Best Broaster Chicken I have ever had. Â Well.....I've never really had broaster chicken before, and don't really know what broaster chicken is. Â If I had to guess, I would have guessed it was fried chicken. But, what do I know. Â I'm just a city girl passing through. Â
When I told family that I was traveling through Antigo, WI this weekend I was told that Chet & Emil's 4 piece, all white meat broaster chicken was a Must Try on my way through.
While traveling north on Hwy 45 make a left turn at the 8ft white chicken, drive 2 blocks and make a left. Â You will be able to smell it's deliciousness when you pull up out front. Â
There are several different doors, one for the Motel, one for the bar, one for the bowling alley and one for Broaster Chicken. Â Regardless of which door you go in, they are very friendly and will point you in the direction of the dining room. Â
If you are in a hurry, or have your dog in the car like I did, ask for it to go!! Â There is a nice covered patio out back, next to the park, with picnic tables.
Chet & Emil's definitely has the Best Broaster Chicken in Hwy 45!!
