I've been to Mr. Chick's a few times, and typically the service has been spot-on. Food is pretty good (4 star worthy). I would give Mr. Chick's a 3.5 star review if it were possible, because the food is quite tasty despite the poor experience I had. Since it isn't possible, however, I don't dare give it a 4 star review as that would be completely inaccurate.
Let me start by saying that Mr. Chick's seems to me to be a staple of life in Cairo, GA. Most people born here have probably been to Mr. Chick's several times growing up and know the menu very intimately. I did not grow up in Cairo, GA, and I do not know the menu very well. This, I think, is where the unsatisfactory service began. Mr Chick has a fairly limited drive-thru menu when compared to their in-store menu, and as a result, some things tend to be relatively vague such as what quantity the various items come in, etc.
I ordered a few things from the menu, and apparently ordered something incorrectly. I was treated in an extremely discourteous and unprofessional manner, which struck me as odd considering how polite everyone had always been in the past. I figured it may just be a problem with the drive-thru speaker/mic, and shrugged it off, driving to the window. I was greeted by a teenage girl who did not say hello or tell me my total before reaching her hand out waiting for my payment. Again, I was a little taken aback, but paid her anyway. She returned with my card and my food. I looked her in the eye and said, "Thank you," and received an eye roll and a bag of food with a quietly murmered (and half-hearted) "you're welcome."
Considering the fact that Cairo is known as the Hospitality City, and the fact that Mr. Chick's has always been such a pleasant experience, this was already enough to spur me to write this review.
Then, I got home, and it got worse. The order was very much wrong. Wrong sauce, strips weren't dipped, the list goes on. I have to imagine this entire encounter rested solely on the shoulders of said teenage girl operating the drive thru window, because the natives of Cairo who shared my experience were equally appalled by it.
I guess it should be said that everybody can have a bad day, but I am a firm believer that whatever may be going on in your life, when you are being paid to do something, you do it with a smile and with grace if at all possible.
I honestly don't know why I went there instead of Chick-Fil-A, where they are almost painfully polite and have the best service I have ever encountered at any "fast food" restaurant.
How quickly can you say:: FOODGASM!!
Heading back home from FL with the parentals, I opted to stop here for dinner on a Saturday night before Mother's Day. The ambiance of this place reminded me of a Cracker Barrel--old vintage decor all around, very SOUTHERN & family friendly. The patrons were diverse, from jeans, boots, cowboy hats, to shorts, flip flops, and sunglasses.
The service was EXCEPTIONAL!
The food was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! I had a grilled grouper & coleslaw sandwich, which came on a sweet roll--like King's Hawaiian bread. My parents both got fried catfish, fries, and coleslaw. All of the fish filets were HUGE, not those dinky fingers you typically get. The catfish was comparable to the filets at Holiday Lodge on Sardis Lake! The coleslaw was a little on the sweet side, just the way I love it!
On our way out, I decided to try some of their lemonade, because it was in a huge bin sitting on the counter with fresh lemons on top of it. OH MY GOSH!!! YUMMI YUMMI YUMMI!! It was so refreshing! It tasted like the real thing, although I didn't ask if it was.
I will definitely stop here again if I am ever in the area.
I didn't save room for dessert, but I would have loved to try that banana pudding. I'm sure it was homemade!
As a side note, I met a couple in the parking lot who I stopped to ask about all of the 1940s/1950s automobiles I had seen driving by and in the parking lot. They told me that the owner of Mr. Chicks started a car show and had an automobile museum behind the restaurant that people could tour--I think for FREE!! The car show was every Mother's Day weekend. Seriously, this just added to the awesomeness of this place!!
Amazing! A buddy in Atlanta told me about this place before I ever came to Cairo and after eating here I know, it's great! Good country comfort food. The chicken strips are delicious and the sauces are great. They even make their own homemade bluecheese sauce.
The staff is so nice, I told them it was my first time here and they gave me fried okra for free.
Definitely come here if you're in the area.
