I struggle with this one. Â Here's the thing. We were in town for a baseball tournament. Â We're not used to Tehachapi heat. Â This place is so nice and cool and comfortable inside. Â That's why we came here more than once.
Food: Â not great
Drinks: Â "sigh" Â They advertise 805 beer all over the place, but they were out of it both days we were there. Â Margarita was strong and tasty, but served in a beer glass. Â I ordered a chardonnay and I swear they poured water in it. Â It was the worst glass of wine I've ever had. Â BUT, the IPA I had was fantastic. Â Can't remember the name of it.
Lots of TVs. Â The place is clean. Â I'd come back.
My husband and I went to this restaurant the other night and walked out because we did not receive any service for 20 min! It was horrible we didn't even get water! It is really sad because we had been there several times and got great service. We were ignored! The food is hit or miss. I like their dinner salad and their chicken tortilla soup is great. My husband and I are a little obsessed with onion rings and they taste pretty good here. We are hesitant to go back again. It's a shame.
Review Source:My family had a dinner for my granddaughters birthday at City Slickers so I read the reviews in advance of going. The majority were very bad so I was expecting the worst. Much to my surprise everything was great. The food was prepared as well as most good dinner houses and the service was excellent. I would definitely dine here again. By the way this was a Monday night so I didn't really expect the A team to be working. If this was the B team kitchen and wait staff, the owner should be proud.
Review Source:My wife is disabled and the bouncer stated that if my wife would not sit up straight we would have to leave. I explained that my wife is disabled and that she can't and he didn't care. So I asked the bar tender to speak to the manager and she didn't care and also stated that there is no manager. Â So we left. Needless to say I will never ever go back to City Slickers because of their discrimination against the disabled.
Review Source:Their biscuits are delicious and so good. Â Enjoyed the potatoe skins apetitzers, their very big potatoes. Â We've had the battered shrimp and the breading was kind of thick. Â The steak however was well coooked and to order. Â The Asian Chicken Salad is the bomb.
Only downside is the music or noise from the bar that can be loud if you're eating in the dining room.
City Slickers was the spot for dinner , Tonight  our  third host brought us our cold beers , IPA please for me and sierra Nevada for my friend . She returned with shock top or ranger for IPA's , well I took the Ranger as the shock top is a Belgian wheat . Beers were cold and today was hot . Salad for me and full rack of ribs for my friend. I asked for my Cobb salad to have a blackened chicken breast and dressing on the side , coleslaw and beans fro my friend .
WOW what a great salad ! ! ! It was huge ! ! ! I had asked for it to be pre-chopped and they did a great job ! ! the ribs were well I never got a taste , you know what i mean ?
Samantha was a BIG help and she ducked and weaved to get us just what we asked for , Thank you ! ! Â City Slickers has a great employee here ! ! Â We'll be back ! !
My husband and I will be going back to this place.
The food was good, the service was okay and the atmosphere in the bar area was nice.
I ordered the ribs and it came with a couple sides and I asked for a side salad. I love salad and was expecting a "bar salad" covered in croutons and cheese... the salad came out with fresh veggies! I was very pleased. It is not everyday you find a bar that puts olives and beets on their side salad.
Will be happy to try it again.
Monday night at the bar, seemed about 1/2 full. Bartender was more interested in chatting with the 'regulars' I suppose rather than deal with me, the out of towner. Eventually she did some over and took my order. An older guy at the bar across from me, wanted to cancel his order for the meal, but was told by the bartender, he could not as she had placed the order and it was almost ready and if she did, the cost of the meal would come out of her paycheck. Huh! Poor guy bought that line and the bartender brought him a foam box in to which the old guy shoveled his meal. The beer was cold and big. The meal, a steak was hard and so-so. not too good, but when you're hungry, you don't complain. The steamed veggies probably came from a bag and the beans from a can. Not fresh! Good place for a beer, eat some where else.
Review Source:Came here last night with my boyfriend, the food here was ok, but the bar side was going on! i did like the country band they had performing, even though I'm not a big fan of country music, but they played some descent songs. As far as the service, it's a little slow, but other than that, it's a hell of alot better than Mohave restaurants, lol..
Review Source:Well...Henry's Cafe (recommended on Yelp) was unfortunately closed for lunch at 2pm so we were told by some locals to try City Slickers. Â I would have preferred going to Burger King up the road after eating here. It was a dark, uninviting atmosphere with one waitress sitting across the way on her phone rather than waiting on the three tables that had customers.
When the burgers came, they looked good, but were only so-so. I was totally disappointed in the sweet potato fries that I was looking forward to eating. Â Some were hard and barely cooked and the ones that were cooked through were bland.
My recommendation? Hit the Burger King. I would have loved a Big Mac and fries - same calories, better food!
We eat here once in a while when we are looking for something different than our norm. There kids menu is a little different and my son doesnt like anything on it except the kraft mac and cheese. Their chicken strips taste kind of funny. However, they have a mystery grub ciabatta sandwich that is really delicious. The sweet potatoe fries, and salads are very good also. I love the southwestern egg rolls. They didn't have the best planning when they put the only bathroom on the dining side, if you are there in the evening you usually see drunk people stumbling through the dining area.
Review Source:I wasn't too impressed. I have had way better burgers. The burgers were thick but they reminded me of the frozen patties you buy all boxed up in the stores to feed a party for cheap. I had the burger with the ham and pineapple and teriyaki. The ham was way too salty. Just eh.
Ok I came back here a week or so later since I took my buddy to Legends since I told him the burgers there are better. After he ate there he swears up and down the burgers at City Slickers are better, so I decide to go back.
This time I had the Trail Blaze Burger with apple-wood bacon and BBQ sauce. I still stick with what I thought before. The BBQ sauce is too runny. The burgers still taste like those cheap already cooked frozen meatballs. My burps the rest of the day tasted like that. The buns are one of the best part of the burgers.
The biscuits they serve are really good. The fries are great. I'm just not a fan of the burgers.
The service is great. Both times I go in the Lady at the front greets us and seats us. On the way the bartender greets us. Had the same waitress both times, easy on the eyes, gave suggestions on things to do here but wasn't during a busy time so really can't grade them when we the only one there.
Been here three times now for dinner. Â All visits were very good which will keep me coming back.
In the evening after a work trip I am looking to watch a game or two, over a couple beers and enjoy a casual dinner. Â This place hit home on all points. Â I always turn right into the bar half of this place. Â It's laid back casual with plenty of room at a table or at the large U-shaped bar. Â If you turn left into the restaurant, it's light and homey with plenty of booths. Â Families groups sit on both sides.
Twice I've had the blue cheese burger. Â It comes with several choices for the sides. Â Had the regular fries and the sweet potato fries. Â Both are really good and done right. Â The burger is really too big (1/2 lb.) for me but I finished it both times. Â Good beef to start with (Harris Ranch), the blue cheese is not just tossed on top but broiled/melted over the top. Â You get your veggies to add if you like. Â I'm getting hungry writing this.
Last time I had the Pork Shank dinner. Â It's comes with choices of sides. Â I had the baked potato and the cole slaw. Â Both are good. Â The shank comes out like a mini pork mountain on a base of mashed potatoes. Â It's good but not great. Â Tasty but not terrific. Â I've had lamb shank before that was falling off the bone tender and moist. Â This shank should be cooked slower and lower for that same effect. Â Dinners also start with a basket of bisquits that look and smell yummy but I have not indulged. Â Too much food!
They have a nice selection of beers on tap. Â A bunch of TV's all around the saloon half of the place and a patio for outdoor drinking and smoking when the weather warms up. Â Service is very good and timely, prices are reasonable and parking is plenty.
Aug 2011 - My last visit was the best. Â Had the Bacon BBQ burger, potato wedges and Sam Adams joined me for awhile. Â Ate out on the patio. Â Wonderful meal, service and setting.
After several visits I had to stop eating here. Food is average and service has been slow. Had to leave one time because the 70 minutes before the start of a school concert wasn't long enough time to get dinner in. I also don't think they maintain their beer taps. I have had off tasting beer on 2 occasions. Too bad I really wanted to like this place.
Review Source:i know being the only upscale-ish bar/grill in tehachapi doesnt have a lot of competition, so attention to detail isnt so important... but... im here right now. its monday night. the only live sports action on their 10 lcd screens is womens' college basketball. is there really nothing else on right now? they splooged their budget on these spiffy tvs but couldnt buy the nba or nhl cable package? whatever. this town is loony tunes. they probably enjoy wnba.
food is edible. lots of butter in everything.
Cheesy western comes to mind when I stepped into this joint. Â They called the bar area a saloon, but half ass their decor.
Service was decent. The waiter was attentive and quick, but no sense of humor.
Now, the food. Â Visually, the fajitas and the sides look really mouth watering. First bites- lots of flavor; heavy handed with the salty. Â I thought let's cut it with the pico de gallo... more salt. Wow, so typical of most restaurants these days. Â I think this place would have gotten four from me if they just back off on the salt. Â I guess it's better to side on salty than bland or is that just th way now...?
Would I come back? probably... just hold the salt.
I've eaten here a couple of times. Food was so-so, but not worth the cost. The service was great each time, but the plain, out-of-the-box taste to the food was unimpressive. People don't have much choice up here and I guess if you sit at the bar long enough and drink anything will taste great. Locals seem to like the bar area.
Review Source:Usually, I don't review a place until I've been there a few times, but I felt compelled to warn, er, inform other people. Â (To bypass intro, skip to second last paragraph) We stopped in Sunday night for dinner and despite the hovering Security staff, got ourselves seated before the kitchen closed (at 10 pm by the way). Â They had closed the dining room side already, so we sat on the bar side. Â There were two large parties in there and a few scattered couples here and there. Â Our wait staff was friendly and informed us that they had no more biscuits (sad, since I gather they're known for them) but brought us chips and salsa instead and our drinks. Â We placed our order, looked around, and observed the big screen televisions and what looked like a DJ in the corner. Â
Our food came quickly. Â Mine was really good -- a veggie ciabatta with sweet potato fries. Â The bread was fresh and the grilled veggies went great with it. Â The sweet potato fries ROCKED and I would come back for those. Â M y friend ordered this sandwich with a fried chicken pattie, ham and swiss. Â It tasted like something out of a school cafeteria and was quite indicative that the chef hadn't completed the formula when they tossed it on the menu. Â The regular shoestring fries taste like McDonald's ones. Â
Our meal was fine overall, but when the wait staff began clearing the large tables, service slowed down to molasses. Â Our server was apologetic and it was clear that they didn't have the staff to handle a large party -- bad management but not the wait staff's fault. Â We were patient... until...
But here's the kicker.  Around 10:30 or so, newcomers started arriving to the restaurant.  The music went up, the strobe ball went on, tables were sorta moved, and these people started bumping and grinding it  on the "dance floor" (a.k.a. next to a row of tables where they had pushed the chairs away).  I thought "REALLY?!?!" but it was true.  I think these people were channeling the hottest nightclub in LA, but it looked like a high school prom.  Anyway, this restaurant/bar/high-school gymnasium seems to be the hottest place in town.  Security just stood back and watched... you can't help it with people bending over backward.
In summary: Â Eat here, but well before the prom starts. Â And get the sweet potato fries.
I've gone here a couple times now and one of my favorite things is that you can order cherry coke and they make it special for you, its not regular cherry coke out of a machine which is nice. The food is good and theres a good selection. They make everything from gigantic burgers to mexican food. My personal favorite are the burgers and the chicken strips but there are tons of other good things on the menu.
The service is good and the restaurant is clean. My only complaint, like someone else on here was saying, is that music and noise from the saloon makes its way into the restaurant part which gets annoying.
Well we went here on a friday night meeting up with some co-workers and the place was packed...I guess it's probably the only place around with a dance floor and DJ. The DJ was alright, he played a weird mix of music and being that I didn't have to much to drink I sat back and judged the drunken stupidity going on around me.
Drinks were a little on the pricey side I felt for the area and the girls seemed to love getting BJ shots complete with whipped cream (haven't seen that to often).
Huge wads o' meat.
Cheese biscuits were just okay (I really love the cheese/garlic ones at Red Lobster). Side veggies were pretty good. Chicken entrees were just okay. Steak was pretty good. Iced tea was good.
Service has been both good and bad. They did a great job with my mom's 75th birthday party (party of 15). The party room was nice.
The place has potential, especially since Jack Palance lived in Tehachapi up until his death. They could do better with the ambiance.
I stopped by here on my way out of Tehachapi..... I mean way out.... Â I was moving out at the time. Â Not a bad little place. Â Excellent selection. Â I enjoyed the Mesquite Broiled Salmon. Â Ol' Sweetness had a cob salad, and the wife had a pretty good fillet mignon. Â Prices were reasonable, portions were filling, and the service was fine.
As the name suggests, City Slickers has a split personality. Â You enter facing the hostess station. Â The saloon is on the right, and the restaurant is on the left. Â We didn't go into the saloon, but the restaurant side features a friendly family dining atmosphere. Â The problem is that the connecting corridor does not provide adequate sound separation. Â We stopped in on a Saturday night, and an ok band was playing live in the saloon. Â The music was loud and out of place in the well lit dining room. Â Conversation was a little difficult.
