Clayton's; the new happening place on the island for daytime drinking. There are a total of 4 bars/ limited menu restaurants situated beach front on SPI, Clayton's is the biggest. Biggest doesn't mean better but if you want to check out a bustling beach crowd or live music beachfront than could be your place. Unfortunately like 3 out of the 4 other beach bars this one also falls prey to slipping on food menu. I think what happens is they focus on drinks & count on the ocean front atmosphere so much they don't need to pay attention to food. Fish tacos super bland as well as the burger, two things that I believe are not too difficult to make good but alas no winning food items- yet.

Well Clayton's may have a leg up on where your friends suggest to meet for a drink but don't count on fab food.

I wish I could give 0 stars. This place has the WORST customer service.

I closed out my tab and the bartender gave me the wrong debit card-- it was exactly the same card as mine except it was someone else's. Our names aren't even close to similar so I have no idea how she managed to screw that up. I didn't notice it until I tried to buy something later (and had left South Padre) and it was declined. By then I was back in Austin and 6 hours away from my card.

I call Clayton's and talked to the general manager Randy, who offered nothing to make up for the MAJOR mistake. I'm in the process of moving and won't be able to get a new card for almost two weeks. More than just making my life much more complicated, they screwed over TWO paying customers. I don't think it's asking too much for my drinks to be comp'd, but Randy wouldn't do it. He only offered to give me food and drinks when I came back, but that ain't happenin'.

Any good restaurant would credit back my money instead of offering empty apologies. They decided to charge my card after realizing the mistake! Who does that?? The drinks and food weren't even worth it. The management and drinks are awful.

Edit: Wow they are prompt at deleting Facebook posts! Not at taking care of their paying customers.

The seasoned fries in my fried shrimp basket were especially tasty.

I had 2 events here and one the first day service was great, no issues with getting my pitcher and sample cups. The bar was fast, prompt and provided excellent service. The next day wasn't so great, they suddenly didn't have pitchers and promoters "should have brought their own pitchers and sample cups" and it was a nightmare using the promoter line to get my drinks refilled.

The turbo pina colada made my day though.

I was only there during the day each day, it was so much fun. I can only imagine how it was during the nights! Check out my pictures, it's a blast there!

I give this place negative stars. They gave my food away and my girlfriend is PREGNANT. We waited 45 mins for our food cause they have us a broken buzzer. Then when I told the only girl bartender she just shrugged her shoulders and said wait longer. And their soft drinks were watered down. THIS PLACE SUCKS BALLS!!!!!!! We wanted to have a wedding here to. They just lost out on a lot of money.

This place was AWESOME!!!  The food was fresh, delicious, and the service was quick.  There was also an awesome vocalist there and she was only accompanied by her brother playing a guitar.  I can't wait to go back again!!!

The 4 stars if for the food/service.  Location and amenities would get 5 stars as the large covered and uncovered decks sitting right on the beach with the option to rent umbrellas/chairs to sit in the sand is near perfect.

If you are going with the intention of eating bar food, expect 4 star quality in comparison to other bar food.  We ordered the chicken nachos for an appetizer and they gave us just what we wanted - a large pile of thick, crispy homemade tortilla chips smothered with melty cheese (think ballpark nacho cheese) and sprinkled with chicken.  They are served with small sides of avocado, pico, and jalapeños.  The chips definitely made these tastier than they would have been with regular "restaurant style" tortilla chips.

Our lunch entrees were fried and grilled fish tacos both of which were satisfying.  The corn tortillas were soft yet crunchy, just slightly fried and perfect for keeping all the other ingredients inside without the tortilla tearing or blowing out as is common with a soft taco.  Again, for bar food the quality was better than I've had at other places.  Tacos were served with fries (ok) and we also ordered a piña colada (also just ok, but better than we had at most other places on the island).

Overall we were satisfied with our lunch selections because we anticipated bar food with bar food quality.  Don't expect too much and you'll be pleased.

This place is GARBAGE! If your hard earned dollars are worth anything to you, stay away from this place.

I'll start with the food. I had the peel'n'eat shrimp. They tasted like they were boiled in the same water they were caught in, no seasoning and somewhat undercooked, and the cocktail sauce was basically ketchup, and it was $12 for a measly half pound. My girlfriend had the nachos, was prepackaged cheese with overcooked hamburger patties chopped up and drizzled on top. Tasteless for $9. The rest of the families fried fish and shrimp were easily recognizable as frozen goods reheated for us to eat, which is a major disappointment since I could see shrimping boats off the coast.

Next is the drinks. Margaritas are flavored colored water with a dash of bottom shelf tequila, made by bartenders that only wear a smile if you're a local. Lucky I fit into that category, but as employees of a tourist resort, you would think they would be a little more welcoming to tourists. Unfortunately for them, that is not the case. They are rude, short tempered and demanding as they shove your drinks out to you with the smirk of a beach punk. $9 for the standard large frozen marg, and $4.50 for two bottles of water. We only bought the bottled water because they water coolers they provide are out of the city water hose right below them, do NOT drink it. All the liquor bottles behind the bar were swarming with flies, and the bartenders that handle the cash are the same ones pulling the straws out of the boxes and forcing them in your drink. I opted for no straw...

Claytons really needs to rethink things. The food is trash, drinks aren't worth half of what they're asking, and they just rake you over the coals. The only music they play on repeat is reggae, you would think there would be a little more variety. The only thing positive in this place is the party out in front, it's a place that attracts good numbers of people, but anyone that has half a wit knows not to buy anything from them.

A new bar on South Padre? Yesssss! I've been going to Wahoos and Tequila Sunset and Louies and Coral Reef so long I'm practically a regular. Clayton's opened up just recently and I was shocked at how HUGE it was.

The parking isn't great and sometimes you have to pay but the space is gigantic. A huge outdoor patio with gorgeous views of the beach. They usually have live music too but don't come on a night when they have a guest rapper. Annoying. It's the beach dude. I want to hear Marley and Jack Johnson and Buffet.

The drinks were reasonable and the crowd was all ages but not in that annoying 18+ way. People had kids and were enjoying the time and that's cool with me as long as one of them doesn't get entwined in my dancing legs. It's way North down the beach so make sure you're prepared to take a cab if you've had too much!

A fantastic place to hang out during a day at the beach.

Clayton's has just about everything you need to get you through a day on the island - great food, frosty beverages, shade, volleyball, and chair/umbrella rentals. My friends and I posted up in front of Clayton's and hung out on that stretch of beach all day long. It was nice that everyone could go to the bar as they wanted and we didn't have to all leave together to get lunch, etc.

The food was great. The cheeseburgers tasted like really great backyard cookout burgers and the fish tacos were delicious.

I do wish the drinks were as fresh as the food. The margaritas are way too green to be made out of fresh lime juice so that was disappointing. I did enjoy the "Turbo Pina Colada" and would order that drink again.

There should be more bars like this on South Padre Island!

    As a resort:
    What I didn't like-
We reserved 1 of the 2 'beachfront rooms'. On their website the pictures they have of the views are either the beach or the pool area which appeared to also have a sliding door. Their pictures are not up to date because they have since built a large ramp and deck for their beach bar. I was very disappointed because I was under the impression that the room came with a view. We also had the keep the blinds closed because everyone on the deck could see into our room.
The drinks are pricey at the bar.
Beach chairs and umbrellas aren't included with the cost of the room. You have to rent them for $25.

    What I did like:
The room was very comfortable and spacious. I liked how the property was right on the beach. I didn't eat at the beach bar but it was nice to have a few drinks and just walk to our room at night. The mornings were very quiet on the deck until the bar opened up.

I wouldn't recommend this resort if you're looking for a quiet relaxing weekend on the beach. The bar starts playing loud music around 11:30am. But if you're looking for a comfortable place and don't mind the activity, this is a great place to stay. Overall I did enjoy my time here.

Been to this bar and by far its the biggest beach bar I've ever seen. Too bad it was cold that day and too bad I stayed for a shot of some drink I can't even pronounce. so its not you Clayton, its me. Friendly bar tender.

I love this place it was right next to our hotel and dogs were allowed. The drinks were a bit pricey but the food was reasonable and good. The staff was really nice but keep track of your tab I believe the lady over charged us $9 bucks and wouldn't give us an itemized receipt. Other than that it was great!

Great location on the gulf side with an open air seating area overlooking the beach.  It looks like they have a volleyball net and some other fun beach activities like sandcastle building going on outside.

Our bartender "Chef" was very friendly and charismatic, offering us blankets when it got chilly and making sure we never waited for refills on food and drink.

    The ceviche was good.

Overall a nice first impression, especially on a laid back Wednesday night.  I will be returning to Clayton's on my next SPI visit.

This place is pretty nice. It's unassuming from the road. In fact, it's kind of hard to find as the entrance is tucked between two hotels. But it's worth the search.

You enter via a long boardwalk. The bar/restaurant is around the building and is comprised of a very large deck with a bunch of outdoor tables and a large bar. There was live music this Tuesday, albeit not very good. Order drinks & food at the bar. The shrimp tacos with onion rings were good. Drinks seemed a bit expensive. But you're paying for the exquisite view of the beach.

I was bit a few times by bugs here. I wished I wore bug-spray.

Loved this place! It was a short walk down the beach from where I was staying and was exactly what I was looking for! A cool little restaurant and bar on the beach, open to the breeze and steps from the waves. Had the fish tacos and was pleasantly surprised, nicely seasoned and very refreshing for a lunch on the beach.

Went back in the late evening for a drink in a can (no glass on the beach!) and found the place hopping with live music and even some tipsy dancing. Don't know if I'd actually want to stay at the hotel part with all that music and partying going on, but it was fun to find some nightlife on the beach!

I love this place. Come here a lot to play volleyball with friends or just have a couple drinks at the bar.
Food is nice. It's clean and there's great music.
    Love it!

Tried a new place a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised.  After reading the following description in the Island Breeze online magazine/paper, we were a little skeptical of all the hype.

"The biggest beach bar on the Texas coast is now open and quickly becoming a locals' favorite on SPI. Clayton's Resort, Beach Bar & Grill opened June 15 and its prime location, airy, relaxed atmosphere and great entertainment are pulling in the crowds.
That's not surprising since Clayton's boasts pristine beaches, sand volleyball, and breathtaking views all within 50 steps of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. And this weekend their new kitchen opens serving everything from seafood baskets to hamburgers, sandwiches and salads - all at affordable prices ($7 on average). Don't miss happy hour every day from 6-9pm.
Entertainment includes Thursday evening "Sax on the Beach" with Patrick Trahan starting at 6pm, Sneak Attack on Fridays at 8pm, and Southern Train on Saturdays, also at 8pm."

Well, everything said was true & we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

I would love to give this place 5 stars, but we only had a basket of fries - fresh by the way - and a few drinks - very good Bloody Mary, and good service.  I believe we need to check out the food and the music scene before we can give it a full 5.

If you spend any time on the beach down there, this place is very similar to Wanna Wanna's, just bigger & newer.  Menu was not inspired, but it seems like 95% of all the bars & restaurants have decided to clone their menu's.

All in all we had a very good time & the paper was right - it was full of locals!!
