Good Happy Hour Deal (for Maui) - $6 gets you a draft beer and a slice of pizza.

For food they have good salad, pizza (veggie options are great!) & burgers, but I haven't tried any of their other entrees.

Very typical pricing for Haiku - $10.75 will get you a huge burger and fries that you will have trouble finishing.

    Fast & friendly service.

One of my favorite things is that they have a coffee bar for those of us who need to grab a cup and go fast in the morning!

My family and I headed over afterI we biked down Haleakala. I had one of the best blue cheese burgers, I have ever had, with Maui Cattle Co. beef. I loved it so much, I am researching a way to get the beef home with me. My son had the fish tacos, he let me know that they were REALLY good and had a little kick to them.

Went here for breakfast the other day.  Seems like more of a local place than others on Maui.  A bit off the touristy area which was nice.  I had the hangover cure for breakfast which is basically a skillet with ham, cheese and potatoes with scrambled eggs.  Its was really good.  They also have excellent coffee.  I'd go back again for sure.

The service was great in this tucked away restaurant. Once you're inside they have a variety they offer on their menu and it's simple and cute inside.

My friend ordered their Fish & Chips which were Da Bomb! OMG they were good. They were fried without being too oily and the fish was moist. Highly recommend the dish.

The burger was okay.  I was expecting it be juicer and more flavorful, however it was okay. Fries were really good though.

The food was good. I would go again. I believe I had a croissant egg sandwich, it was delicious. I wasn't expecting it to look as nice as it is considering the location is a little run down. I did try to stop in for happy hour but people seemed to be overflowing almost out the door. Only thing I didn't like was that it seems like the whole place was filled with regulars. I felt like I was walking into a strangers house, everyone seemed to know each other and I felt awkward trying to find a seat for happy hour.

We stopped here by accident on our way down after catching the sunrise at Haleakala; the place highly recommended by our guide book was closed. Man oh man am I glad they were! We wandered in and must have looked a bit lost because our server approached us and asked if it was our first time. When we responded in the affirmative we got the oh so trite "Everything is good". Instead of stopping there where that phrase usually does, she launched into descriptions of half a dozen dishes with ways they could be customized. She included vegan and gluten free options in the awesome choices. I decided on a chai to drink and I was given the best chai I have ever had. The eggs, veggies and bacon I decided on were also superb. Fantastic gem with great food and caring staff!

I've been in Maui for 3 weeks now, have eaten at many restaurants, and Colleen's is my favorite so far. I have eaten there twice--once for dinner & once for breakfast--and both times the food was absolutely delicious.

Service was just fine. They were polite, took my order, brought me my food, and then brought me the bill. I don't understand the people who go out to eat and complain when their servers aren't up their butts every second. No need to be so uptight at mealtime, folks.

Anyway, the pizza was perfect, in my book. The ingredients were super fresh (fresh basil is the best!), the amount of cheese was perfect--not too overloaded, and it was cooked perfectly. The salads were large and tasty, and breakfast--omg. So good. I had the egg&cheese croissant & a coffee cake to go. Noms!

Excellent meal.  We were worried about the service because of other reviews but we were delighted with our friendly waitress.  We arrived about 6:00 on a Friday night and had a choice of tables for 4 and by the time we left, there were a few people waiting to be seated. We all had salads - nicoise and citris with mahi.  In each case, the fish was perfectly cooked and ample servings.  We also shared a piece of passion fruit cheese cake and it was a nice big piece with a thick graham cracker crust and a pile of whipped cream  - we all felt that we had enough to enjoy from that one piece.  And for $6 it was a bargain.

If it wasn't the end of our time in Paia, we would certainly be back!

Came here at 8am on a rainy Thursday - no wait, fast friendly service, delicious eggs benedict, wonderful blueberry pancakes & good coffee! What more could you ask for? A view? No worries, just drive to Hana!

So this is Haiku?  No, not pronounced like the Japanese poem, but Ha'iku or "sharp break".

Nice find in an otherwise lackluster hodgepodge of shops in the vicinity.  Ambiance:  4 stars.

We arrived at the brunch to lunch transition period, so had to wait about 30-40 minutes before we could get our Ono Avocado Wrap & Tuna Melt.

The Ono Avocado Wrap was simple, but fresh.  Somewhat dry piece of ono, but wrapped in crisp, flavorful green leaf lettuce & buttery avocado:  3.5 stars.

The Tuna Melt was made with fresh ahi with zesty chopped red onions and perfectly melted, luscious cheddar.  Quite nice:  4 stars.

The two spicy Bloody Mary's we had during our wait was worth it.  Fresh tomato taste with fiery horseradish that made this liquid quencher pop!  Two large green olives and generous wedges of lime & lemon, kept us distracted from the wait:  5 stars!

We couldn't resist their baked goodies & took away their Coco Tid-Bit.  A flaky coconut popper:  3.75 stars.  And their coconut, Macadamia, chocolate bar on shortbread crust with a layer of gooey caramel, geez (forgot the actual name, sorry):  5 stars!

A great New Year's Eve find that hit the spot despite the hiccup transition from breakfast to lunch.  Service:  3 stars.

    Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!

    Tally:
    Ambiance:  4 stars.
    Ono Avocado Wrap:  3.5 stars.
    Tuna Melt:  4 stars.
    Bloody Mary:  5 stars!
    Coco Tid-Bit:  3.75 stars.
    Chocolate/Macadamia/Coconut/Caramel Bar:  5 stars!
    Service:  3 stars.
    4+3.5+4+5+3.75+5+3= 28.25/7= 4.03 stars.

By far the best breakfast in Maui! I recommend the French toast with berries, pancakes with berries, the vegetarian tofu wrap, the granola with yogurt and the coffee.  All of the items we ordered were absolutely amazing.  The restaurant is understaffed so service can be slow at times. I did not get a chance to try the baked goods as they run out of them quickly.

Pricey eggs benedict at $12.99 a pop. The lox eggs benedict and standard eggs benedict both delish. Large generous portions. Our first benedict dish was over poached and the yolk wasnt runny enough. Second benedict dish was perfectly cooked and runny. Very busy cafe so if you get an over-poached egg, kindly ask for another one. Nice, warm ambience. Good place to munch after finishing Haleakala bike tour. Right next door to Haleakala Bike Company.

I've been here two times, and the second time evened out the score to a three rating instead of a 1.

It's all about the service Maui. Get with it.

First time, the service was so slow and bad. I looked around, there were plenty of open tables, and we just waited at the door. For over 5 minutes, and plenty of the staff saw us waiting. Five minutes later they showed us to a seat, and put us elbow to elbow with someone. Didn't make any sense, since there were open tables everywhere. We asked to move, and reluctantly they said yes.

Our server was off doing who knows what, and never got us our silver wear or refilled our water.

I looked over the menu, and noticed that prices were higher than there website. A huge no-no. If you are going to hike up your prices, make sure you change your website. The pizza and beer deal went up, as most other things. I always notice these things, since I check the menu's before we venture out to a place, to make sure their fair sounds good.

The food was good, and the inside of Colleen's looks a hell of a lot better than the outside. It has a sort of English pub feel to it.

Second venture, I knew the food was superb, so I gave them another shot in the service department. Second times a charm, and the meals and service were a lot better. The portabella burger is to DIE for. Don't even get my started on the fries... So crispy and seasoned to perfection. My boy's father got the ahi burger, biggest piece of ahi I have seen a place serve! Next time I am trying that bad boy.

So either I just went on a magical day or things have taken a turn for the better.

On our way back from the Hana road we stopped here for dinner.  The Fodor's guide book highly recommended it, I was out of range to check yelp so we plotted our course.  Once we got into range I started reading all the gripes about the service and went in almost holding my breath.... The service was fantastic - probably the best we've had all week.  We were greeted quickly, had menus, water and the specials were being run down with great detail.
We were thirsty (did I mention we were coming back from our trip?) Our water glasses and tea's were replenished almost as fast as we could empty them.

The food was good.  While not the best pizza we had on the island, it was very good none the less.  SWMBO had the fish and chips and thought it was terrific.  Lot's of attention to detail - fresh herbs on the pizza, exceptionally tasty tartar sauce for the fish.

The place was very clean, the portions large, the ambiance was really unique - reflecting what you might see at a Cannery - very tall ceilings, white walls.

I was very happy that our experience was top notch.  Definitely 4.5 stars and if the wife was writing this, I think she would go for 5.  With slightly better food or perhaps less expensive, I think it would be 5 stars also.  Don't miss it, you'll enjoy it.

Forget it! the tacos here are abysmal!
With a menu of such wide hit or miss options, it is like taking a gamble in Vegas to dine here... which may be exciting for some, but not for me!
The variance in their service also contributes to my ambivalence now about Colleen's.
Dining out in Maui is becoming somewhat frustrating and I am just about ready to throw in the towel on the whole idea.

A great little stop for breakfast or lunch while seeing Haiku.  We made this our breakfast stop after doing the bike ride down the mountain.  It was a great little stop full of reasonably priced menu items, and the coffee was wonderful.  Their bakery items were fresh and I recommend the almond bear claw for anyone with a sweet tooth.  I know my roommate enjoyed her breakfast burrito, and it was huge! An absolute must try if you are in the area!

Hmm it seemed this place was going to be a change from eating massive amounts of delicious resort buffet food to some "down home cooking" . I am not sure where other people grew up but my grandma and mother know at the very least how to cook an egg on both sides. I ordered sunny side up and it was super clear and runny. That is a very simple order, which most people can't mess up. Anyways my husband ordered simple egg whites and they were also raw and like in a weird ball of raw egg whites. The potatoes were good. The service was inattentive and never filled our glasses of water or asked if we needed anything else. And they were not even that busy. Just brought the check when they saw we were finished.

Awesome Benedicts: Ono, Mahi Mahi, or more traditional varieties.

The iced chai latte is also excellent.

The Traditional French toast of Hawaiian Sweet Bread sounded awesome, but tasted like plain old wheat bread. It was a little dry, way heavy on the nutmeg and the "maple syrup" wasn't real.

The bacon was nice and crispy but was cold by the time I got it.

They could use another server or two, they were pretty busy.

This place is all about down home flavor.  Each dish has some sort of home-cooked-meal added touch.  Get it- the beet salad and make sure you mix it up as the dressing is on the bottom.  Second salad choice would be my second salad choice.  Yum.
Go ahead and order fish or chicken dishes.  Solid.  Everything else looked good at other tables.
Would have been five stars if it were a little cheaper.  Little pricey, but definitely worth it.

I sit down at a table in front of the cash register where the waitresses have to pass to pick up there food.  Well guess I was not visible enough for them. Took about 15 minutes to take  my order, and then about 45 mins to tell me they forgot what I ordered! All while Im right in front of the owner, shame!  After an hour waiting , I tell them I have to go, had an appointment. Now with no breakfast.  Lost a customer , sorry crew you have be more aware of whats going on if you want to keep customers.

I'm not sure if the secret of service was lost somewhere in time, or if the ahi died in the hale kuke with no way to reignite.  Whatever it was, the food took forever to come out.

It was definitely worth the wait, though.

Wow, never know a restaurant of this caliber would be found in Haiku!  Luckily we were invited to dinner by a close friend.

    Atmosphere:
Small & cozy.  Don't let the exterior of the mall deter you.  Dinner ambiance was nice - lighting just right (not bright enough to take a nice pic of my dish though.)

    Food:
Vodka Penne $18.  Awesome.  Better than Marcos' version because it's not over-powered with garlic.  I would opt for linguine pasta next time.  Not a fan of tube pastas.

    Service:
    Fast, efficient & friendly.

    Overall:
I want to go back and have breakfast there, since most reviews on here say it's awesome.  But dinner was great too!

As most everyone else has already said.. amazing breakfast!

I was staying in a condo on the other side of the island in Makena.  We wanted to find a good place to watch the sunrise, and then grab some breakfast, but got too late a start to drive up to Haleakala crater.  So I hopped onto Yelp, looking for breakfasty goodness on the east side of the island, and Colleen's seemed like the overwhelmingly obvious choice from the existing reviews.

So we drove out that way, stumbling upon Hookipa Park on the way. Stopped there to watch the sunrise, and some early morning surfers, then continued on to Haiku for breakfast at Colleen's.

Wow!  What a great little morning drive, it was incredibly peaceful, not packed like I hear the crater gets around sunrise.  Got to watch some surfers on huge waves, and then followed that up with an amazing breakfast? Come on... There can not possibly be a better way to start the first day of a week vacation in Maui.

My girlfriend and I both had french toast.  She opted for the berries on hers with fresh squeezed orange juice.  I got a side of 2 eggs (that really looked more like 4 eggs!) and coffee..

French toast was extremely good.  Thick, flavorful, doesn't get any better than this.  The eggs were really tasty too, and as I mentioned a larger portion than I expected.  On the girlfriend's plate, not only did she have the same 4 thick slices of french toast, and orange wedge that I had, but it looked like she also got half of field of berries on there as well.  Ok, that's a slight exaggeration, but just slight..  Seriously, there was a mountain of berries on her plate.  Blueberries, Strawberries, and bananas (ok, so those aren't berries).   YUM, with a capital Y-U-M...

As for the beverages.. well everyone else was right again, coffee, was REALLY good.  I presume it's locally grown, or at least grown on one of the islands -- didn't get a chance to ask.  But it was tasty, and the addition of the ice cold little cream pitcher was a pleasant surprise that far too many restaurants overlook these days.

Finally, and I've saved the best for last here, that fresh squeezed orange juice.  OH MY GOD!  It literally tastes like biting into an orange that's just been plucked from the tree.  And not just some crappy run of the mill orange from the local grocery store.. no, this is a freaking amazingly perfect orange.  I'm actually hard pressed to think of the last time I tasted an orange as good, and this was easier to consume in juice form.  I honestly think I would go back, if for no other reason, just to get some more orange juice.  Don't let the price on the menu scare you away, the price for the OJ is worth it.

Also, all in all, I think the meal we had at Colleen's was one of the best values we had on a meal during our stay on the island.  If you find yourself anywhere within the vicinity of the island, even if you're just in a passing ship, swim to shore, and walk or hitchhike if you don't have a car to Haiku.. stumble into Colleen's and recuperate from that journey over an amazing breakfast, with coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. Do it. You'll be glad you did.

Holy crap... leave for 10 years and things get bigger!

Right before I left Maui (10 years ago) Colleen's was just a little cafe with only about 4 tables.  Now it's a real life super big restaurant. Quite impressed.

The food is good and the service is great although, something happened to their baked goods.  I used to LOVE them and their total out-of-the-oven freshness. Now they kinda taste stale. (I had the cinnamon roll and the coffee cake.)

We came over for breakfast a couple of times.  My husband enjoyed the banana pancakes (best ever!) I just had the eggs with potatoes which were also good.

They have a good happy hour special where you can get a slice of pizza and beer for $4.75.

All in all, it's a good place.  Sad that they are catering more to the tourist.  It was a nice local cafe hangout once upon a time.

I was taken to colleens on a first breakfast date with someone on my first time in MAUI.. back when it was small and quaint and Colleen was a memorable friendly introduction to "island style"... Now that she's rockin the slick space,  I am so happy that she's doing so well and continues to bake amazing treats, serve fab coffee and more than any other meal HER BREAKFAST RULES MAUI!! And she is STILL as friendly and welcoming as the first time I met her.

The hollondaise sauce is fresh, real and TO DIE FOR YUMMY!! Always a stand by "must go eat there" when I'm in Maui...

We stayed in Pa'ia and wondered up the road to Haiku (actually we got lost and ended up here by mistake). The breakfast was terrific, particularly for a strip mall local. Eggs benedict w/ veggies was awesome with big chunky potatoes and fresh squeezed oj. lots of good baked goods in the case -- raspberry scones and muffins galore.

Service with a smile. Reasonable in the $ dept. And hearty portions. What else could you ask for?

Breakfast here gets 5 stars, but ends earlier than you'd want it to.  Their Lunch menu is boring and bland.  Dinner is a little better than lunch but still doesn't compare to their breakfast.
If this place had competition (it doesn't), it would get creamed at lunch and dinner.
Moral of the story, come for breakfast!
    The end.
Oh, one more thing, staff is wonderful and ambiance is quaint but dark.

My good new friend Selena suggested this place that was just "down the road" for lunch.

So we followed her down to Colleens which is conveniently located in a strip-mall so you know what that means, right?  Lots of parking!! YAY!  and when I am hungry, the last thing I wanna do is have to walk a long way with a grumbling belly!

It's a pretty decent size place, kinda cowboyish - but then again it's on the border of Haiku and Makawao which is cowboy country on Maui.

They had some very very awesome hugemungous mirrors on the walls - and being the vain person that I am, I had to look into them all.

I've read some of the posts for this place already, and I must make note that I wasn't at all looking for baked goods, but they did have a substantial counter for it.

The waitress was ok - not like overly friendly and truthfully, I'm usually ok with that, but that day, I wanted some friendly banter like "where you from? or "how do you like Maui?" or something like that..there was nothing happening from her - oh well, thankfully Selena has this amazingly awesome laugh that gets us all going - so she basically earned the tip for the waitress.

I wanted BEEF - but I settled for Fish and Chips (go figure).

    Hubbie got BEEF with fries
I got, well the total non beefy, fish and chips
and we shared a ceasar salad.

Ok so here goes what I thought of the meal.

Fish and Chips - well, it was ok.  The fishe wasn't cod but some other white fish - can't remember it - but it was a little better than cod.  The serving size was small - I would have preferred larger pieces of fish but alas, it was not to be had.  The fries were ok too.

Hubbie's hamburger was cooked just the way we like it (note the "we" because, hey,  how am I gonna review what something tastes like, unless I TASTE it, right?!??!)  The burger was slight - so don't go looking for a honking burger cause you are not gonna get that here, but the bread was huge., go figure....

The ceasar salad had potential if it weren't dripping with dressing - and the romaine lettuce were cut up just a wee bit smaller.  Heck, I know I have a BIG mouth but come on...gimme a break and cut that up a little bit more or tear it or something!

I ran outta water and had to wait more than I wanted to, it wasn't that busy either.  I totally subscribe to the "island way of life" but when you are eating greasy battered fish and fries, you need your agua, you know?

Would I recommend this place, well, if you didn't feel like driving into town, yea.  But if you were up for a beautiful drive in Maui, while watching rainbows on the way into town, I would say  put on the hawaiian station and mellow your way down to like Outback or something like that...seriously, that's what I plan on doing the next time I visit Makawao.

Very nice ambiance with even better food. I've only been for breakfast, and can highly recommend their HUGE pancakes and smoothies. Food is always fresh and service is good.
It is located in a refurbished cannery, so the feel is very 'industrial chic' - with great high ceilings and good jazzy/funky/reggae music playing.
The vibe is very 'Windsurfer/European/Reclusive Writer" sprinkled with some locals and Bed & Breakfast tourists looking for a spot off the beaten path.
It's not in the most convenient of locations, so I wouldn't necessarily drive all the way to Haiku if you are staying on the South side of the island, but, it is definitely an option if you are driving to/from Hana, or happen to be touring around upcountry Maui!

We ordered take out dinner from here but would eat at this restaurant anytime. The lady at our rental house recommended it and everything we got was put together real well and the folks behind the counter were super cool.

The menu had lots of veggie and vegan options and everything on the menu seemed thoughtfully selected.

We had enough for lunch the next day (probably because we ordered too much!).

If you happen to be in the area make sure you stop into the unassuming storefront.
