Sloppy joe was the best one I ever had. It was the size of two put together. Â Hamburger style beef steak was excellent. Portions were great, friendly staff. Can't wait until I am driving through again.
I have never wrote a review before I finished my meal. I was so happy with the food and service, I forgot to leave a tip.
No longer am I going to dread the drive between Omaha and Des Moines. Â There is now a stop for FRESH fried food, cooked while you wait (you can hear the fryers behind the counter), while you peruse the paintings on the walls. Â The tenderloin was so hot and crispy that I nearly burned my tongue, but I did not care....it was a piece of yumminess.
Review Source:As my brother, my 2 dogs, and I approached the 9th our of our road trip to Buffalo, NY from Denver, CO, it was apparent that our tummies were grumbling from lack of a warm meal. We were in the middle of Iowa, on I-80, in need of gas, and had already passed Omaha. What to do...?
We got off of the exit for Shelby, IA and filled up at the BP. We noticed that there was a "restaurant" attached to the gas station. This stop would be the perfect fix for what we needed to get through 3 more hours of driving for the night!
My brother went in to check out The Corn Crib while I took the dogs to stretch their legs. He came back out in hysterics. We picked the perfect time to visit- there was  country western concert taking place, in the gas station/restaurant and we were sure 90% of the town's population had to be there. What a scene! I've never seen so many cowboy hats and corn fed people in my life!
Brother ordered the breaded pork sandwich (which is apparently a specialty in Iowa) and I ordered the slow roasted beef dinner. Both were EXCELLENT to our surprise. Beef melted in my mouth. I was told by the woman at the counter that the recipe belonged to a local and was the special that night- right before she said "you enjoy hun', God bless!". Does it get any more wholesome!?
This is a great stop if you are traveling with dogs. There's a really cool outdoor seating/garden area that made for a great little walking path that the pups certainly appreciated. Just don't forget your doggie poo bags!
If I were ever to make that drive again, I would for certain stop by The Corn Crib! It was the highlight of our 24 hour drive.
This is a combination restaurant, gas station and convenience store. Their gas station is fine and the convenience store seems to offer standard fare, but the most interesting part of The Corn Crib is their restaurant. Order at the counter and they'll bring it out to you. I had a
great BBQ brisket sandwich. Extremely tender, nicely marbled and undressed with sauce so I could put on just a little of their sweet sauce.
Very reasonable prices.
I had thought driving across I-80 was a wasteland of mediocre chain restaurants but the Corn Crib proves me wrong.
