A great hole-in-the-wall southern barbecue joint. Pulled pork is fantastic with just the right amount of tanginess in the sauce. Don't let the outside stop you from going inside, I've eaten here several times and it is always great. Worth the drive from I-40 if you are going from Little Rock to Memphis. Mary's pie shop across the street is worth a stop, but they close at 5 and aren't open on Sunday.
If you are going to Devalls Bluff you need to choose between catfish at Murray's or barbecue at Craig's. Just stop for one or the other.
We love Craig's BBQ! We take I40 across country whenever we drive, just to stop there for lunch. The funky decor is wonderful, and so is the food. It's always packed when we get there but somehow we've always found a table. We always get the pork BBQ sandwich, love the cole slaw in it. Once they had buttermilk pie from the pie shop across the street, and it was to die for. A couple of times we've found the pie shop open. Once we got fried pies and ate them later on in Memphis; a bit greasy but good. Â Another time we got a piece of pie and ate it there (one piece was plenty for both of us.) Â It's definitely worth the detour from I40.
Review Source:Craig's is a distinctive, dare I say... stretching, experience. Â It's a short drive off I-40. Â
In spite of (or because of?) my extensive redneck past, everything about it - the physical establishment, the clientele, the decor - made me uneasy. Â And I generally see dives as a challenge. Â But I'm glad I went, and I'll be back, should I ever have reason to be in this delta Timbuktu again.
There's almost a "squatters' party in a condemned building // keep an eye out for the cops!" vibe going on. Â All it needs is a burn barrel to complete the aesthetic. Â In retrospect, it appeals to me. Â In the moment, it was unnerving.
The pork is nothing to slap anyone over. Â In fact, I found it to be pretty tough. Â But the sauce beats it into submission. Â It's thick, even a little bitter? Â Â Get it as hot as you can handle. Â It's a pretty special combination.
The side is... chips. Â Maybe they had beans; I don't remember since I don't do beans. Â (I know, I am the barbeque heretic.) Â Â It's all about the meat here, folks.
This is one of those sum-of-the-parts experiences. Â Everything taken separately, it's decent at best, just plain scary at worst. Â The icing on the cake is the endorphin rush that comes as one drives away, the joy of surviving to tell.
But seriously, the food is like nothing I've had in 30 years of dozens of high- and low-end Tennessee BBQ joints. Â Highly unique and highly recommended for adventurous souls in the area. Â A must-stop for BBQ pilgrims.
If the mallard duck panelling in this joint didn't get 5 stars, the bbq would anyways. I am from the pacific northwest and when I lived in the south, I STILL didn't have super great bbq.
The woman that took my order figured I should have already known what I wanted, and She is totally right, the first thing I saw is what I got since its all i could read quickly enough to answer the question "what'l yall have?"
I will have anything you give me!!! and I will take two bottles of sauce home too!
the end
What a hole in the wall.
We visited Craig's BBQ in Devalls Bluff on a trip across country. This place is infamous in Arkansas and my fiancee's family had been going here for over 50 years. Man, they've got a great thing going there, but the place is tiny and I wish it were cleaner looking.
The folks there are extremely friend and seem to make the best out of their little ship.
The food is to die for. The tangy BBQ sauce combined with the coleslaw make the pork sandwich my new favorite in the world. I had this sandwich only once before after her aunt had frozen it and we ate it months later. That was good. Being there, in the moment, eating the real thing was even better.
I don't know if I will ever get back, but because my fiancee's history with the state of Arkansas, I can confidently say I will eat Craig's again.
We bought some BBQ sauce home with us, so we'll just have to see how that goes -- I might have to have them FedEx me a case of it.
Sweet crackers this place is good.
DeVall's Bluff literally has a population of maybe a thousand people max. And its a little bit off the major freeway. Fortunately, I had a friend, who used to live in the area, recommend a stop at Craig's. The barbeque sandwich here smells amazing and comes fully drenched in sauce. Unfortunately, the pie shop across the way was closed, but I definitely will have to come back!
