Really nice time with family. Â Prices are right and food was good, my daughter loved the Crab Bisque soup and just loved it, the Hush Puppies were very good also and of course the Crab Cakes were also very good. Â Nice waitress, new the menu, and a good night out withy family. Â Cute gift shop attached to restaurant.
Review Source:As good as it gets for this area. You get greeted at the door like you're a regular there and their food is spot on. The crab on crab was tasty, a lot of healthy side options and had of a serving for 1 person. The prices were also reasonable and fair compared to the area.
They also have a small gift shop on the side that you can peruse. We bought a coffee cup, and a beer glass that had their restaurant logo and Reedville, VA stamped on it.
We will definitely come back when we're in the area.
I took some family friends here for lunch during a wine trail trip. Lara was our server and she was very friendly and put up with our antics (including a Krusty Krab & Patrick YouTube video). Â The food was good and my friends really enjoyed the view. The prices are good and the atmosphere is perfect Reedville.
Review Source:I am a regular here and like the fresh seafood traditionally prepared. Â The ambiance on the water can't be beat in the Northern Neck. Â I believe they have a new cook who has kicked up menu a lot. Â For specials, they had a red snapper with green tomato chutney. Â It was fabulous. Â Excellent hush puppies as well.
Review Source:Took my ex wife, son and grandson there for lunch yesterday - it was their first open day of the season I had been told. Â Everything started off tremendously well - great service, the wings were wonderful, the hush puppies as well, the fried green tomatoes were decent.
Comes the main course - three of us chose fish and chips. Â The fish they are using in this basket is the toughest, chewiest, driest white fish I've ever eaten. Â It was such a disappointment! Â One of our party chose the seafood platter (scallops, shrimp, crabcake, fish) and it was outstanding apparently, but to mess up fish and chips was a real shame. Â And the "chips" were pretty standard - that's an area where a chef can add his little signature flourish - didn't happen!
But I will be back - for the wings and the hush puppies, and maybe the seafood platter!
After enjoying a beautiful day in Northern Neck Va, we decided to head out to dinner and chose Crazy Crab on the recommendation of a friend (I'm a two time "come-here"). The restaurant was small but not cramped with a comfortable atmosphere. I am one who likes to be dressed appropriately so I will make the note that a "nicer" tee shirt and shorts, jeans or a casual dress would be just fine to wear. I would say leave the graphic tee, baseball cap and high heels at home...
We ordered appetizers while looking over the menu and were pleased with the fried oysters but kinda unimpressed with the fried green tomatoes. The fried oysters were what you would expect but the tomatoes were lost in heavy, dense, blah batter. Not bad tasting but not something I would order again. I had the Shrimp and Grits special with applesauce (chunky yum!) and a baked sweet potato (nice change of pace) while my handsome guy had the Crab Cake Platter with coleslaw and fries. I really liked my meal and since I have never had it (but always wanted to try) I would definitely order it again. I like heat so I think I would like the entree with a little bit of heat so I would probably ask for hot sauce or a little heat to be added during the preparation. The grits were delicious -stone ground so more rice-like than the breakfast grits I used to and the shrimp with slightly creamy tomato /onion sauce was also quite good. The Crab Cake Platter was also pleasing (per my dinner date as I was too busy enjoying my meal to sample it). There was a lot of food and I even took a bit of my shrimp and potato home (hey why waste?!).
I am sure I will visit Crazy Crab again...the view is pleasing and the restaurant serves good food. Keep in mind that the menhaden factory is near by and the smell is rather unwelcoming. But grin and bear it I say in order to visit Crazy Crab.
I was going to be generous and give Crazy Crab a two-star rating, but my wife said, "are you crazy? that was about the worst food we've ever eaten." Â It was bad. Â The crab cakes were almost burnt on the exterior and the interior was uncooked and tasted like a mixture of cold, uncooked crab and flour. Â The shrimp were tiny...the fish fillet was over-cooked because it was so very thin. Â The scallops were in a wet coating. Â The beer list is poor, though I'll not hold that against them. Â But my wife also said that the wine was bad. Â I'm not sure that to say. Â We eat out about five nights a week. Â We've seen (and tasted) it all. Â The Crazy Crab is trying to kill Tommy's (since Tommy died) but the fact is that they are not in the same league--much less the same ball park. Â I'd say...stay away. Â The food is bad--really bad. Â The service was fine. Â But the food...well, what to say? Â It sucked!
Review Source:Reedville is a quaint little town. This restaurant sits on the water and we sat outside. The view is lovely.
Service is friendly but they were swamped. Â They were very apologetic as to the wait.
One thing you should be aware of. There is a fish oil processing plant at the point about a thousand yards away and from time to time the unpleasant odor can be a bit much. It all depends on the wind direction.
The food was pretty good. The vinaigrette on the salads was a bit too tart for my liking. Hush puppies were pretty typical. The Norfolk crab (out of the shell and baked in butter) was tasty. The sea scallops were seared and had a nice golden finish. I would have preferred another sauce rather than the cocktail sauce and tartar they came with.
We also had a very nice bottle of 2008 Rosemount Shiraz that was very good and not horribly marked up.
My one major complaint was that there were no oysters on the menu except for fried. I was dying for raw oysters but it was not to be.
Overall it was a nice meal but nothing outstanding or particularly memorable.
We vacation in the Northern Neck every year. The Crazy Crab has always been a traditional last night stop. However, the last couple of years it has left us underwhelmed.
Ten of us dined there last week, and not a single one of us came away saying "That was great!" Only a few of us said "That was good". And most of those were the kids that had the pasta with butter.
I had the fried flounder, which was not hot at all. In fact, I asked for new fries because mine were undercooked and cold. The fish was nothing better than I could get at Red Lobster back in Ohio. And the side salad was uninspired and boring. I was not happy that I paid $17 for a meal that was mediocre at best.
My husband had the steak, as he is not a seafood eater. He said is was passable but nothing great. I understand that Reedville is a seafood town, but I would think they could have a few more options on their menu for non seafood eaters. A single steak and a single chicken dish doesnt' cut it. Not everyone in a group likes fish.
My sister had the rockfish. She said it was not good, that the bacon that was cooked with the veggies and the fish did not compliment the fish at all and infact the fish itself was tasteless.
Overall, very dissapointed in the Crazy Crab, which is very sad to say after more than 10 years. Luckily the dining options in the Northern Neck have greatly expanded over the last few years so we will try someplace else next year.
We stopped by for the night in Reedville on a boat delivery trip up to Annapolis. Â Don't be swayed by the simple building and rustic nature of the town marina. Â It's right over the waters of Cockrell's Creek with tables outside for the view. The menu is, of course, seafood -centric -- but not of the deep fried variety ubiquitous in these parts.
We started with buckets of steamers (clams, locally called "manoes") and mussels. Â Very well prepared and not overcooked or turned into rubber bands. These were sweet and meaty; and the steamers, sand free.
Amongst the crew's choices were blackened salmon, Â a haddock fillet with bell peppers and tomato, plus shrimp and grits with an excellent tomato cream sauce. But the star of the evening was a mixed seafood dish on angel hair pasta in a butter/garlic and olive oil sauce. The 4 big sea scallops in the dish were simply outstanding! Â And -- it was a big portion also loaded with mussels, shrimp, some fish. Again the kitchen needs a "well done" for not being well done when it came to the scallops and seafood.
Northern Neck  Virginia is a great place for a restaurant with its active seafood industry and the locally grown produce (too bad most of them don't take advantage of it), but Crazy Crab stands out. It's off the beaten track, but worth a trip to Reedville.   If you have ever wanted to visit the Bay Island communities of Smith and Tangier, the day boats to carry you there are nearby.
Having just recently moved to this area, the Crazy Crab has become one of my favorite local restaurants. Â I have never been disappointed with the food, and the atmosphere is excellent - especially sitting outside on the back patio. Â Occasionally it takes longer than expected to get our food, but it is always worth the wait!
