Started out great - but it has become quite awful. I've been here MANY times for dinner (double digits) and usually love the food, the past two times have been so awful that I had to write something.
Went earlier on a Friday evening, had reservations. When we got there the wait staff and hostess were incredibly flustered as to where to put us. They were literally trying to whisper behind their hands to move things around and get us seated. I was embarrassed for them but we looked past it - customer service is rough sometimes.
We finally get to our table and order drinks. We're in a booth in the bar area so we saw them being made. They sat on the counter getting watery for about 10 minutes before being brought out to us. The bartender actually SMELLED (put his nose right up to the liquid) the drinks when the waitress went to pick them up because he forgot which was which. One was coconut rum, the other Jack Daniels... they somehow both still got it wrong and served my husband and I the wrong drinks. Okay, it's Friday... we're having a good time and we'll let this slide.
We both ordered french onion soup (have had it there 23124123 times and have loved it - our absolute favorite place to get it). Not sure what happened, I really hope Joe didn't change his recipe. It lacked flavor. Was actually cold because they rushed it out of the over (there was barely "melt" to the cheese", and the bread inside was burnt. So disappointing... Joe's french onion was what made my husband like french onion soup. We asked for rolls (you have to literally ask for the bread to get any). The buns were freezer burned and hard (this is sacrilegious for Marticello's bread!) The butter was so hard and frozen it took literally 8 minutes to start to melt.
We get our meals. I ordered the Friday fish fry with mashed potatoes, husband got the liver and onions with mashed. We added the mac and cheese. Again, both meals we've had several times before at this same restaurant.
My fish fry was incredibly greasy. I only ate half and then told the waitress I didn't want to bring it home because I don't like how soggy it gets when in the fridge (complete lie, I was being nice. I love their "left over" fish fry.) I was given fries instead of mashed (didn't/couldn't complain or exchange them - our waitress was MIA 97% that evening).
With the mac and cheese, again, it seems like Joe's recipe from before was changed. It used to be wonderful and white and creamy. This literally had a pile of what looked like Wal-mart pre-shredded yellow cheddar just thrown on top of it. Made it far too salty and was awful.
My husbands liver wasn't crispy like it normally was. He adds mushrooms to it and in doing so, the chef decided onions and the normal bacon shouldn't be added. The typical sauce/gravy was omitted as well. His mashed potatoes tasted like the flake kind you get from a box.
We are so disappointed. We've told so many people about this place and urged them to go - only to see the food go downhill so rapidly. The waitstaff was flustered and unhelpful. I really hope Joe checks on the food quality leaving his kitchen and makes improvements again. As of right now, we won't be back.
