If you are tired of fast food when traveling, The Cup & Saucer is just smile off I40 at exit 301 or 300 in Monterey, TN. This is an old time, Southern diner with walls covered with old pictures of the town. Had a pretty good Ruben and a grilled chicken salad with almost as much chicken as greens. The service is friendly and all the food freshly made by an owner who takes pride in his business.
Review Source:Passed through here on a long drive, early in the morning. Good food and friendly staff. Husband ordered pancakes and they were absolutely gigantic (the size of a plate). There were quite a few locals gathered there eating and chatting. I noticed a sign that said the restaurant is for sale.
Review Source:I'm a sucker for any kind of diner that features a giant object, so I had to try this place. Now, I'm a vegetarian, so I fully expected limited choices (and this being a diner, not much health food) - both expectations were fulfilled. They actually have several veggie breakfast choices, but for dinner it is grilled cheese or nothing. And it's not gourmet - I buy more expensive bread at home. I think I'd enjoy the food more at breakfast.
But this is a genuine locals' place, and the food still beats a place like Shoney's hands-down. And it has a cup! And a saucer!
