Dan River Family Restaurant

We stopped here on our way back from camping at the nearby Hanging Rock State Park. We had already devoured most of our food supply, and after a whole entire weekend of roughing it in the wild we just wanted a breakfast we didn't have to hack down a tree to cook.

Dan River Family Restaurant offers that down-home country diner vibe, complete with wood-paneled walls, folding chairs and a whiteboard menu. It seems to be something of a hangout for the locals as well, which is always a good sign. The menu reflects this, offering up all the breakfast staples one would expect from a local diner...eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, biscuits and grits, etc. Don't expect anything fancy, but they do it right and the price is reasonable.

I would especially like to mention two things: the biscuits and the grits. Two seemingly simple food items that are so often completely screwed up. I'm always wary of ordering these two things at new places, because I can't count the number of times I've been served up sludgy, tasteless grits or dry, hockey puck biscuits. But I'm happy to say that this was not the case here! They have won me over with the quality of those two items alone.

And yes, to answer the burning question that was on your mind...you can order their pulled pork barbeque sandwiches for breakfast. I know this thanks to my husband, who doesn't like breakfast food at breakfast time. I sampled it, and though it wouldn't be my choice for the first meal of the day, it was very good!

We did manage to avoid the slices of obviously homemade pecan pie that sat enticingly on the counter beside the cash register, but just barely.

If we ever find ourselves in the area again, I'm sure we will be stopping by!

Solid food for your trip to Hanging Rock State Park.  I will definently eat here again when I visit the park.
