I agree with Nina W., after a disappointing bartender experience at another local hole, I happened upon Daphne's and was instantly charmed. Â
I've had A LOT to drink in places all over the place. Â Once I saw the tile floor, the sideways wallpaper featuring NYC's flatiron building, and the list of serious libations, I knew I had arrived.
I ordered a Manhattan, which was delicious, and enjoyed a real conversation with the bartender. Â It was that wonderful time of day when I had the bar to myself, mid afternoon, and was made to feel right at home
.
Not a PBR in sight; children beware.
Classy. Â Actually Classy. Â And I don't just throw that term around.
Best classic cocktails in town. Â It doesn't matter if it's hopping busy, or sublimely quiet. The service is always great, and the drinks are amazing! Â They could maybe use a few different items on the food list, but that's not why you do there in the first place. Â Try a Corpse Reviver #2!
Review Source:While the atmosphere and drinks were great, I was left disappointed by the bartender. About 15 minutes before closing time on a Friday night, my friend and I ordered another round. However, I was only able to drink about 1/3rd of it because we were basically kicked out once the clock struck midnight. At this time, the bartender asked us to finish our freshly poured drinks immediately. After about 2 minutes, she again asked us to leave. Since I'm not open to chugging cocktails, I was not able to finish the drink that I paid for. Additionally, I was left feeling very uncomfortable and annoyed.
I have never known a drinking establishment or even a restaurant to be so unfriendly towards their customers at closing time. I'm left wondering why she would serve us fresh drinks when she knew we would not be given the opportunity to enjoy them.
I hope that this is not common practice for Daphne's, and I would suggest that this bartender rethinks the way she treats their paying customers - her poor attitude reflects badly on the entire establishment, which aside from her, is great.
I am not hesitant to give Daphne's Fairhaven, and it's charming, skilled bartender Jeffrey, five well deserved stars.
This was one of the best bar experiences of my entire life. Quiet. Unassuming. Hip but not full of itself, Daphne's is tucked into a tiny niche under the historic Inn across from the village green. We were on our way to the ale house, actually, when we passed this, and looked inside. My sister was hesitant, because it looked dark and scary due to the low lighting, but I remember a good friend told me to try this spot, if I found it, when I was in town. And, here it was in front of me, and I wasn't about to pass up the opportunity for what could be a great cocktail.
And, oh, the cocktails. They were absolutely perfect. PERFECT. Â My sister ordered a Manhattan and a Tom Collins, I tasted both. The Manhattan was perfectly blended and made with Maker's which is the only whiskey I can usually stand. Divine. The Tom Collins was good too, though I'm not a gin fan, my sister was in seventh heaven, and she proclaimed that she would call her husband and tell him she had fallen in love with Tom Collins that night (first one she ever had.)
I ordered the same cocktail twice, because it was that good. Like, omg that was the best damn cocktail I've had in many years good. Â Two Moscow Mules- A blend of lime, ginger, and vodka. The first one I had was made with Absolut and was divine. The second, I opted for Ketel One because I prefer the taste, and it was orgasmic good. I lament writing this as I know how hard it is to find a perfect cocktail.
Jeffrey was the perfect host. He took the time to learn our names, tell us a little about himself, and learn a little about us. I've never, never experienced the care and service level from any bartender in Seattle centric, Never. I was floored, and he pleaded we come and see him again sometime soon. I told him if not for the 143 mile round trip commute, I'd be there every week to see him :-) Apparently there is a sister Daphne's in Edmonds that I now must find to compare to this experience. I will not soon forget it.
Wonderful (though pricey) spot with bundles of atmosphere. Booths to be intimate and a long bar to be chummy with locals and staff. Fabulous drinks (including amazing non alcoholic drinks such as the lemonade).
Can't get enough of this place. All it needs is some big photos on the wall above the booths and it would be perfect!
This is the most fabulous bar I've ever had the pleasure of going to.
My boyfriend and I went in last August for a drink and a snack and I am very sad we haven't been back since.
We went during daylight so it was mostly empty but we still had a great time. I ordered a Tom Collins and I believe he ordered a margarita and they both were fantastic.
The salami plate we ordered along with our drinks was also superb. Hopefully we'll be heading back here soon!
UPDATE: Â This slim, stylish, urban and urbane lounge now has another reason cocktail aficionados should flock to it: Â Nina! Â She is arguably Bellingham's best bartender. Â
To watch her mix new drinks like a mad scientist (she knows what she's doing) is a delight. Â To hear of her travels to other bars, sampling their drinks, researching cocktails far and wide... and from the romantic past is pure fun. Â
To have Nina mix you a drink from fresh ingredients, many she bought that same day at market, like arugula, cucumbers, fresh ginger tells you she loves her craft. Â She also pours a mean beer.
Daphnes is an excellent bar located in Fairhaven. The bartenders are super friendly and the atmosphere is nice. It has a very relaxing and inviting feel to it. The drinks are great. Â The crowd varies from being full to sometimes empty. But it is always a good time.
The only downfall is that a lot (but not all) of the regular customers tend to bury themselves in their ipads, smartphones or some other media device which unfortunately diminishes the social aspect of the bar. The nice music fills in those quiet moments.
Overall, highly recommended. A+
I've been here several times and always enjoyed the libations and atmosphere. Does get a bit loud, but I deal with it. The cocktails are what bring me back. All are craft cocktails, original recipes, modified recipes, hand squeezed juices, individually made. It might take a bit to get one, but the payout is huge!! Highly recommend the margarita.
People come and go, but this is a good place for a date, apres cocktail, dressed nice or a bit down. You're NOT going to find the latest energy drink, just turned 21 shooter, sugar drink here either.
Come, order up, enjoy.
Wow. I've only visited twice so far, but that's going to change soon! The atmosphere in this room alone is worth the visit, but top it off with the amazing drinks and food that my friends and I experienced, I can't recommend this place enough. No other bar in town transports you away from Bellingham like Daphnes. And for that, I am thankful!! They also have seating on the sidewalk which is perfect for summer nights.
The bartender was friendly (and looks like a pharmacist), the mixed drinks were stiff and delicious, the beer selection better-than-average and the cheese board was heavenly. Plus, on the Friday night I was there, the place was very fun and lively. I didn't want to leave!
Daphne's is my new favorite bar, and just what Fairhaven has needed. Â It feels upscale, but no one looks at you funny if you're wearing dirty jeans either. Â It would be a perfect place for a post-dinner cocktail, or really any sort of celebratory "special" drink.
The bartender is awesome and really knows his stuff. Â This is not a typical rum-and-coke bar. Â Your drink will be memorable and delicious. There's a drink menu, but if you don't see what you're looking for, describe what you like and he'll make a recommendation. Â The juices are fresh squeezed into the drinks. Â Every Wednsday he creates something using ingredients from the Fairhaven Farmer's Market (12-5 Wednesdays during the summer). Â Yesterday it was a "Beetnik", using beet-infused vodka. Â I was skeptical, but it was delicious. Â There is also a little food- cheese/salami plates. Â It comes with fig jam, which pairs amazingly well with the cheese.
I can't recommend this place enough. Â (And no, I don't work there or anything). Â The drinks are a little pricey for Bellingham ($8 I believe) but totally worth it. Â And there is happy hour from 3-6 with a dollar off cocktails, beer and wine.
Daphnes is a wonderful establishment (Calling it anything else would be a disservice). I second Annabel's comment - Daphnes is not what you'd expect to find in Bellingham.
With stiff drinks and a knowledgeable bar staff, I can find nothing unpleasant to point out. I joined my housemates (new and former) for a Cinco de Mayo drink and was delighted by the buzzing atmosphere. The bar was loud, but did not impede conversation - And who can complain about a lively, well-attended bar while enjoying high quality gin?
Daphnes was empty the second time I visited with a friend for his birthday, but still enjoyable nonetheless. By the time we left the pace had picked up and seemed to be well on it's way to a successfully busy Saturday evening.
I forget the name of the drink, but there's a cucumber drink the bartender recommended that was AWESOME. It was light and tasted like early summer (minus the overbearing sweetness of many summer drinks). Check this place out!!
A girlfriend and I visited right at 3pm when they opened. We were very impressed by the decor, the big booths are very comfortable. It seems a little weird that you have to go up the bar to order, but that's the only complaint I have. The bartender was really nice and friendly. They were out of a few main ingredients but as he explained "they just opened" and was really helpful in other drink suggestions. They have a little work to do, but I'm very excited about this place. Happy hour is 3pm-midnight on Sunday-Monday, woot!!!
