We had a great meal here. This is definitely the place to experience regional fare. We started off with cream of tomato with bleu cheese soup -- fantastic! The chicken fried steak was delicious -- a great cut of beef with gravy better than your grandma's! The St. Louis style ribs have a nicely spiced rub, and the sweet homemade sauce is a great complement. The Trainstopper burger was also very good. The cherry pie a la mode was a great finish -- and big enough for three to share!

Great atmosphere but the food was very poor. Our steaks were overcooked, the bread and salad were stale so it was a less than stellar.
It is sad because it has great potential.

Good option for a meal in North Platte.  Good food and beer selection in an historic building.  When driving across i-80 and you can't look at another chain restaurant, you will be glad you came here.

When passing through North Platte or staying over night you are not presented with many dining options.  This place is probably your best bet.  Nice well-portioned salads and decent food from an average menu.  Service seemed a little scattered, but it was a Saturday night and the place was fairly busy with only two people working the floor (nice to see the manager and the bartender pitching in to speed things up).  Live piano music was nice.

I would rate it lower if possible.  A prime rib should NEVER be served COLD.  And when I let the waitress know she took it and was gone for less than 3 minutes before returning a slightly less cold steak.  I suggested she hadn't put it in the microwave long enough and this made her mad, she said that it had not been put in the microwave.  I told her I would not eat a cold steak and suggested I just eat my baked potato but I did not want to pay 20$ for an inedible prime rib.  The waitress was awful not to mention the enormous hickey on her neck.  The meal was also suppose to be served with rolls which we never received.  I left hungry.  Terrible, terrible, terrible.

Maybe the chain restaurants aren't so bad. We left here saying, we should have hit the Ruby Tuesdays on the way in to this place, at least ya know what you're gonna get. I really try to avoid the chains, and usually enjoy and appreciate the cooking at non-chain restaurants, and that's why we picked this place. But this was definitely BY FAR the WORST meal I've ever had! I swear, I'm not being dramatic or exaggerating! Driving cross country from Seattle to NJ, stopped in here after browsing the reviews on yelp. As we walked in, another customer walked by us on her way to the bathroom, tapped me on the shoulder and highly recommended the bacon wrapped shrimp. We figured, why not? and ordered them as an app. Besides the fact that they came out not before the meal as you would expect and appetizer would/should, but it came out at the same time as our meals.... they were pretty gross. Maybe we are spoiled being from both coasts, having fresh yummy seafood at our finger tips, but the shrimp had no taste, except maybe from a freezer and the bacon was kind of gross too- it came with 5, we ate 3. I could only stomach one, and felt nauseated. My husband ordered the rack of ribs, which I have to say, he enjoyed thoroughly. He's used to the wet dripping BBQ kind of sauce on ribs, so the dry rub was something totally different, but he liked it. I asked for the server's opinion... the ribeye w/ the dill horseradish sauce or the top sirloin with the sauteed mushrooms on top? I figured we were in Nebraska,  I've got to get a steak! When in Rome, right!? Wrong! She recommended the ribeye with the dill horseradish sauce, without hesitation. Then.... brought out the top sirloin with the mushrooms. I didn't say anything to her that it was not the steak I had ordered, but when I asked for the missing dill horseradish sauce (that came with the ribeye), the look on her face told me she then realized it. I took one bite of the hard as a rock, dry as a desert, overcooked steak and wanted to gag. I thought maybe it was the mushrooms, because they were tasting nasty! I scraped all of them off, and tried another bite.  Felt ill. Figured I give it one more shot since I was starving after driving and not eating all day, this time with a dip in the dill horseradish sauce.....This time I did literally gag, and spit it out., and couldn't eat another bite, of any of it.  I felt sick to my stomach the rest of the night, and kept tasting it come up the next day, making the day full of road travel again that much worse! It tasted just like a cow farm smells, or like bad old meat. Even the french fries were burnt and hard. The waitress asked me if I didn't like the steak, when she saw that I had barely eaten it, I replied "no, I didn't" and she immediately said she'd take it off our bill, I didn't have to ask. So at least that was a plus. I'd be REALLY upset if I actually had to pay for something so horrible.  Also, after living in 5 of the most expensive areas of the country, even I thought this food was a bit pricey. Our bill would have been (with my steak) about $50. For 2 meals and an app, no drinks, no desserts. Maybe it was the full rack of ribs priced at $24, that made it seem so high. It was an extremely disappointing dining experience, I was so mad that we wasted an hour driving time to stop and eat, then have it be so bad.

Wonderful find (suggestion from hotel staff) in North Platte! In a town that seemed full of national chains, fast food, & dives...this place was a gem. Nice atmosphere with a casual mix of customers. A colleague and I both had full racks of ribs and we could have easily split the plate. I asked the waitress what her favorite menu choice was and she said hands down the ribs...she was right on! The ribs are slow smoked on site with a dry rub and served with sauce. Meat fell right off the bone. My other colleagues had steaks and seemed to really enjoy their meals, too.

The place is split with a full bar on one side and a restaurant on the other...there is a wall w/hallway keeping the two separate. Overall, great place and if traveling on I-80 it is worth the extra couple minutes past the chains on the exit.

Varied menu and gorgeous wood parquet walls.  Great salads, solid burgers. Fried avocado appetizer interesting, but same salsa as southwestern salad.

Restrooms were rundown; service a little slow.

I had the chicken fried steak and it wasn't very good at all. The bartender did however recommend a good beer choice, Boulevard. The ambiance of the Depot is very nice and laid back. Great drink selection, maybe next time the food will be better.

If this was not in North Platte, I would lower the rating.  However, all of the other places in this town seemed like chains.  I had the burger and it was good and the kiddos had the nachos and a blt.  If this were in a more crowded city, it would have more competition.  However, if you find yourself in North Platte, I would highly recommend over the local Red Lobster.

Well, the service was ok. Not grate in any way but in line whith my expectations of the area. I ordered the Sirlon Stake and when the salad had more flavor then the stake I can't give the place more then a 2 stare rating. My girlfriend went for the seafood pasta and it lackt any taste at all except for a hint of citrus. When I go to a restaurant I expect the food to taste more then at a McDonalds.

Lunch at the Depot is amazing. A varied menu that is sometimes rare in rural Nebraska. Large portions and reasonable prices, plus it is nicely decorated, which is also sometimes rare in rural Nebraska. Friendly and efficient staff. Great place to stop for lunch or dinner.

Passing through and needed a late night dinner.  Amazing chicken fried steak and the train depot burger was good too.  Service was fast and very friendly.  Ask for Betty, she is the expert with the knowledge!

We went to the Depot for lunch.  Their lunch portions were as large as other place's dinner/supper portions.  The food was delicious, too. The hostess and the waitress were both very helpful, friendly, and attentive.  We both had the chicken fried steak.  The customary side salad had a little extra surprise-dried cranberries.  I've read other reviews that the prices were high, but coming from Denver, the prices seemed reasonable to me. Our soup or salad, large chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes were 8.95 each. I I loved all the wood and inlaid wood throughout the restaurant. I give the Depot 5 stars.

Passing through North Platte on the way to Colorado. This is a good local restaurant with a broad menu and good food.

Well.... we went in jeans and sweaters and felt right at home.  Stopped once for lunch as we sped across I-80 and once for dinner.  The alfredo pasta was outstanding, as was the Reuben sandwich and BLT.  The night we stopped for dinner there was a fantastic pianist playing romantic songs.  She alone was worth the stop!

Okay, I haven't been here in more than a decade, but I love the Depot.

I was 22 and working as a wire editor at the North Platte Telegraph. We had all our Classy Events (TM) here. There was karaoke the night the Telegraph held its Christmas party here. One of my fellow copy editors sung "Baby Got Back", thereby winning himself the nickname of MC Whitebread.

Pair it with Doris' Tavern and maybe some late-night Runza and you've got yourself a night. Ah, North Platte, you were ... something.
