On our most recent trip to beautiful  Pocahontas County, WV we stopped in at the Dunmore Country Mart and was pleasantly  surprised at the fantastic service. The food was great.  We had the best  fresh hamburger with homemade buns!  The homemade donuts and pastry was so light and tasty.  We looked forward to going back to the great food.  The owners made the stop even more enjoyable by making us feel like family.

Left Snowshoe and went a different direction to go home, through Staunton. VA instead of traversing a bit of WV. Â After we passed by Cass and we had to make the decision to continue on to 28 or 92, there was this humble looking gas station that we stopped at. Â Our son wanted water and I had to use the restroom, so this was as good as anyplace to stop.
WHAT ABSOLUTE GOOD FORTUNE!!!
The first thing I noticed was how friendly the proprietors were. Â The ladies bathroom was also very clean. Â I was outside with Max waiting for my husband to return, when he told me I had to go inside to look at the pies. Â I admit, it was difficult not to notice the seemingly homemade donuts nicely displayed at the entrance. Â We walked back to the wall-to-wall refrigerators where there were a healthy number of pies to select from. Â We bought the pecan and apple crumble because we had company for Easter.
The pies were a HUGE hit. Â Both were EXCELLENT.
You never know what you're going to find when you stop by the side of the road....
A couple old school gas pumps outside. Beautiful spread of baked goods, including pies and tarts in the refrigerator case by the beverage selections. Breakfast and lunch options scribbled on a whiteboard stand on the left as you come in. Service with the friendly rural attitude, reasonable credit card minimum. Clean bathrooms. I opted for the BBQ pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw, which was assembled in less than five minutes. Bun neither stale nor aggressively toasted. Pretty simple, slaw and meat fairly flavorful, very affordable.
