Decent Mexican food.  Better than Taco Bell.  Not amazing.  Nice wait staff.

Try the grilled fish tacos! Better than your abuela's!!  This little taco shop, which looks like it was formerly a Wendy's, is a hidden gem!

On the way back from Mammoth Lakes, we stopped for a bite to eat at this off the beaten trail Mexican grille.
I should have been wary when I saw it was Pizza AND Mexican food because we all know if they're serving two different ethnic food genres, they're probably not great at either one.
I ordered the Large Chicken Enchilada plate with rice and beans on the side. I first went for the rice and it was hard as rocks, maybe because it was old? One can only assume.
My friend actually thought she chipped her tooth when she bit into her rice, but I decided ok I'll have to give the rest of the plate a try.
The beans were whatev, your typical refried beans, and the chicken enchilada was just shredded chicken inside. I was scared to eat the chicken because if the rice was old, who knows how old the chicken was.
Overall I would recommend stopping somewhere else on your journey through Mojave.
Only reason I'm giving this place two stars is because customer service was awesome.

El Jefe Baja Grill cooks up a solid mix of Mexican, American and Mexican-American food.
I had the carnitas quesadilla and it was very good. You can't escape a certain level of greasiness with fried pork on a quesadilla, but this was surprisingly not too greasy. The pico de gallo was very flavorful -- and not very spicy. The guacamole was really delicious -- not spicy again. It seemed very fresh, it was very green.  We tried the mild salsas (red and green), and they're still pretty mild even on the second day (had it with my leftover quesadilla for lunch).
Husband had a carne asada burrito with black beans. It was huge. He ate most of it, leaving behind just some tortilla scraps.
Kid's americano chicken and tomato taco (a custom creation) was very, very good. She told me it was better than what I make (me - total gringa).
    Orchata was delicious.
The menu is pretty much Americanized Mexican -- they have tortas, burritos, tacos, fajitas and enchiladas. They also serve burgers and salads. If they serve menudo on Sundays (LOL), they don't shout it out on the English menu. Chile colorado was the special for the day.
Service was very quick. Food took no time at all. Staff were pleasant.
Bonus -- they have FREE delivery to the hotels and motels in Mojave with an order of $25 or more.
    They are closed on Sundays.
