Food was terrible, bordering on being spoiled. Guacamole had the strangest after-test I've ever experienced. It was also barely warm, something that should never happen in a Mexican restaurants. My husband and I were both sick half the night after eating here. We have been coming here when in town over the last 4 years, and the food has consistently gotten worse to the point that we will never be back and I don't want to eat any Mexican for a while.
Review Source:El Som is pretty much the best Mexican place out there (the best meaning that it's really good). Good food and it's inexpensive. The only down side is that they do go heavy on the oil, so it's not dieters paradise, but there are some healthy items and they never get upset if you ask for any modifications.
Review Source:A good dining experience. The food is good, and has a nice variety of options. Fairly standard Mexican restaurant fare. The wait staff is usually friendly. Â Although some are better at understanding English than others. That bar seating upstairs is usually pretty nice and leads to fun times although it can get pretty loud. The bar's drink selections are pretty good, but the drink specials that they run each night are what makes the bar worth visiting.
Review Source:The highlight of my recent lunch outing at El Sombrero was the salsa...tasty!
The chips were cold and stale.
My lunch order was the speedy gonzalez, nothing here that set it apart from the same menu item at any other typical Mexican joint.
Its cheap and prepared quickly and my waiter was friendly enough.
It does the job. Cheap food for college kids. I don't think the food is really THAT good but I can suffer through it for the price. I get the chimichanga or the arroz con camerones Texas when I go. This location has a great upstairs area to relax and look out onto the street. It's also cleaner than the one on Fair but for some reason the chips are not as fresh in my opinion.
Review Source:If you want ok food and a good, more upscale atmosphere come to this El Sombrero.
If you want GREAT food and slightly less nice atmosphere go to the El Sombrero in the old Publix shopping center behind Hardees.
If you want crappy food and to be surrounded by drunken college students, be sure to go the the El Sombrero on Fair Road.
All in all, this is a pretty good location. Â The seating is more plentiful than at the other two locations, so there isn't usually as much of a wait. Â If out on a first date, I would probably bring the date here as it is more aesthetically pleasing than the other two El Soms, though the food isn't as good as the other HWY 80 location (the one behind Hardees)
This was my first time in the newest El Sombrero in Statesboro. The food is good, not as flavorful as I remember, but still quite tasty. The new location is a bit nicer aesthetically than the older buildings of the other El Som restaurants. Either way, you can't beat the food and price. The service was excellent as well, so no complaints here.
