Visiting Stillwater Eskimo Joes is a popular stop for locals and tourists. Â The gift shop is extensive and filled with a variety of themed gifts and clothing items. Â The sales racks were very cheaply priced. Â Service was prompt and friendly in both the gift shop and restaurant during our visit, which was on a Tuesday evening about an hour before they closed. Â
My group decided to order dessert since we had already filled ourselves at Palominos (see other review). Â Since their milkshakes had supposedly been raved about by the Food Network, I ordered the apple pie milkshake. Â It was a decent milkshake, but there was nothing special about it that I would consider TV worthy. Â The other desserts ordered we good, but nothing that would make me recommend Eskimo Joes as a must eat destination.
Took our family there for lunch, while visiting Stillwater. It was pretty good! I had their burger, it was tasty! Get there early, otherwise you'll be waiting over an hour! The food took about 30-40 mins to arrive but it was worth the wait. The clothing store is filled with all kinds of cute shirts for the family but pricey! I still bought shirts for the family!
Review Source:I am an OSU student from way back, even graduated ('96)! I used to get silly with my buddies at this place and try to work on my approach to meeting ladies. I was a slow learner, but I soon learned the drinks were good and cheese fries hit a certain spot in my belly that I didn't know existed.
I have fond memories of walking over to Joe's from the dorms and seeing some pretty good bands. One awesome memory in particular is seeing/hearing Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat from the Dallas area play some particularly smokin' blues and rock'n'roll. What a night! I don't know if the bands they have play there now are this good or not, but they should be.
Eskimo Joes is a food destination when you visit Stillwater. What "Planet" is to "Hollywood", or "Hard Rock" is to "Cafe", Eskimo Joes is to Stillwater. It's somewhere you go to check it off your bucket list.
The food is typical for this genre of theme restaurants. Burgers, sandwiches etc. The Queso Fries with or without chili is a staple of most locals.
They have a good hamburger and fries, but nothing you can't find at a Chilis or Red Robin.
The friends you bring along will make or break your visit.
I came here with low expectations but left feeling pleased. I'm happy to say that Eskimo Joe's really does live up to its hype. The inside of the restaurant had cool decorations and a chill atmosphere. We sat at the bar to avoid the 40 minute wait time for a table. The bartender was helpful and really knew her stuff.
I ordered the spicy blackened chicken sandwich. It was very very good! Chicken was cooked perfectly and I liked all the spices. Fries were delicious too and the total was only around $8.80. I liked that you get to keep the plastic drink cups as souvenirs. I got one that changed colors whenever it's cold.
The restaurant was smaller than I expected. It's several stories high with a huge gift shop. There were shirts in every color you can imagine. They also had themed shirts for St. Patty's day coming up and OSU wrestling.
I enjoyed my meal here and service couldn't be better. I look forward to another visit!
Ok I think Joe's is a pretty cool place. I mean, it's Joe's! It's iconic Stillwater and it's a cool place to hang out and grab a burger. As much as I wanted to give this place more stars, I'm not going to (I was going to say I can't but in reality I can do whatever I want to do lol).
Yeah, the atmosphere is great and they have some pretty cool specials (all you can eat coneys for $4, yeah I think so. Bottomless bottles $5, yeah I think so again) but the food is just mediocre and the service is hit and miss. I went there tonight and had a great time, but my burger wasn't really that great and the fries weren't too much better (they were not bad though).
So yeah, Joe's is cool because it's Joe's and you should go there for that reason, just don't expect to get blown away by the food. You'll have a good time though. That you will.
Most small towns have a restaurant success story, in the case of Stillwater its Eskimo Joe's. Adding to the tenure, they have multiple spin offs which cover Italian and what I call Tex-Mex that I didn't visit. I welcome any business that can defy the odds and actually make a go at well funded retirement.
EJ's starts out at the hostess stand with a better than Hard Rock Cafe gift shop. Clothing, koozies, shot glasses...marketing scheme in overdrive. A small 10 minute wait and we're seated in the bar browsing the menu. Traditional Americana complete with every possible item that can be dropped in a basket into hot oil.
I have a soft spot for fried mushrooms and onion rings; and the kitchen didn't disappoint. The crust on each item in our combination appetizer was well prepared. Not a hint of grease could be found and excellent ranch dressing. Burgers is what EJ's is famous for so I went for the Joe's Special medium rare with jalapeno jack; the wife pairing hers with cheddar and sweet pepper bacon.
Both burgers came with amazing fries adding to their frying prowess. My burger arrived well done; the bun could have been better too. Besides those two complaints the experience was pleasant. New favorite, the sweet pepper bacon which I will order a pound of when visiting again. A 20 year old OSU sophomore manager took my meal off the bill due to the kitchen's cooking mistake. Almost 4 stars
The bf says that Eskimo Joe's is an institution for OSU. I guess people have even asked the owner to move their location to Tulsa or OKC, but he refuses to. For good reason I'm sure because the interior and exterior is very cool!
Had to try the burgers, but I'm trying to practice some portion control so I ordered the caesar salad (mainly because I wanted to try their sweet bacon), fried mushrooms and a kiddie burger. I did not like my salad... Call me crazy, but sweet candied bacon just tastes funny to me! Especially on my salad which tasted real weird too- I blame it on the dressing. The mushrooms were SO good! The batter is similar to Pop-Eye's. The chili cheese fries are pretty good as well, but I like the mushrooms better. My burger bun was soft and successfully complimented my burger. Pickles, mustard, and diced cooked onions with my meat- that's all she wrote. It was really really good. I think they buy their meat from Ralph's (see review for Ralph's Meat Co.)
First time at Joe's. The wife's family has been friends with the owners since they were in highschool so she has been many many times but this was my first trip. I loved the place cool atmosphere and cold beers. The food was better than average but the burgers were premade patties and that gives them a strike but overall a good experience. I picked up so Eskimo Joe's swag and had a good time. I will go back and I would recommend.
Review Source:Average college environment restaurant. The food is pretty average, sometimes dropping to mediocre. The fries tend to be incredibly greasy and eating an average side orders worth tends to induce nauseousness. Additionally the last time we ventured in the West St. Fowl Thing included a bucket full of juice that completely soaked the bottom of the bun.
We've never actually gone at peak times so the service has always been average to above average but on the last trip it took the waitress a good amount of time to bring over a shot even though there was probably one other table in her area.
I know it's a tradition thing to go to Eskimo Joes at OSU, but it's just not that good. Â We went three times and had bad (and slow) service three times. Â I'm not used to super-greasy food, and expected it - but I really didn't expect a hair on my veggie burger (is it bc I didn't order meat?) - and didn't expect the waiter to tell me maybe I shouldn't have a third (3.2% BEER) drink since I'm driving.
??????
First, I wasn't driving - I live 3 blocks away and had walked. Â
Second, why does he assume I was the one driving? We hadn't mentioned driving.
Third, it was 3.2% Miller beer and I was just ordering a third beer. Â Are they that conservative that I'm not allowed to order a 3rd beer in their restaurant?
Fourth, the guy actually sat down next to us at the downstairs bar after we finished eating. Â Then he had shots of liquor there while pretending he didn't remember us. Â Maybe they should have cut HIM off instead of me. Â Employees should not be drinking next to customers at their work. Â He just wanted us to leave so he could go to the bar himself and drink up.
I always give restaurants 3 strikes and you're out. Â Well, you're out Eskimo Joes.
As an OSU alum (85' - Go Pokes) it has been many years since venturing back to Stillwater and Eskimo Joes. Â I was there in the early days, when Eskimo Joes meant beer....copious beer.....and not much more!
Spend weekend in Stillwater, and REALLY enjoyed the evening we spent at Joes!!! Â The staff are SUPER friendly, the place is well run (albiet crowded and loud), the retail store is a hoot...but the biggest surprise was just how REALLY tasty the food was!!! Â Cheese fries with bacon - a treat even on my diet!!! Â Chicken sandwich was wonderful, great fries, everyone at our table spoke higlhy of their dish!!! Â
The real treat of the weekend was heading back over Saturday morning and getting a 37th anniversary poster signed by Stan Clark (owner) and Bill Thompson (artist behind Joe)....what a couple of class act guys!! Â Stan and I laughed about how my memories of him began as a long haired guy behind the bar pouring beer....and selling t-shirts from a box behind the counter....they have come a very long way!
A great place, great food, great people and great vibe!!! Â A do not miss for Stillwater visitors!
My wife and I and our daughters family came here June 10th for my wife's birthday. Thank God they didn't know it was her birthday or they have a very robust birthday surprise (song/clap/shout) they will spring on you when you least expect it. Besides that, the food is reasonably priced, pretty much consists of the same menu you would expect from a diner. The cheese fries were a hit. The atmosphere is festive and the place was busy, great service. Food was just ok. I would eat there again. It's a fun place to try.
Review Source:Best cheese fries ever! Really fun atmosphere. Fowl thing (a chicken sandwich on a bun) is a really yummy lunch or dinner. Make sure you check out the store and get a classic Eskimo Joe's T-Shirt. This place gets crazy busy on game days because of its famous reputation so be prepared to wait a while if you come here when it's busy.
Review Source:I am not from Stillwater, but when I visit family I always end up eating there and buying their branded logo merch. Â The food is just ok, nothing really that special. Â It is a local and regional institution and I really do enjoy wearing my Eskimo Joe's t-shirt in Seattle and having folks approach me and ask me if I am from Stillwater.
Review Source:My memories of Eskimo Joe's as a college student aren't that great. Â It was always too crowded for my taste, even when I was supposed to enjoy being among crowds. Â However, I always enjoyed the food for the most part. Â The burgers are only OK but the fowl thing is great, nice and spicy. Â The cheese fries are what keeps me coming back, particularly the ranch dressing. Â Not sure why but the ranch makes me salivate. Â
Now, when we get a chance to take the family, we enjoy stopping by Joe's. Â We stopped in recently while back in OK for the holidays and our experience was pretty good. Â The service is always a little hit-or-miss and it was the same this time. Â The service was spotty but not too bad. Â But, the boys love the cheese fries, so at least I am raising them right! Â My wife swears the chocolate shake is the best she's had. Â So, there are several things we love and look forward to having when in Stillwater. Â
So, if you are in town, stop on by. Â You pretty much have to, it's a rule. Â Just expect to wait a long, long time, particularly on a weekend and especially on a game day. Â Because everyone else knows you have to at least attempt to go by when in town. Â So, take it for what it is and enjoy!
I had heard about Eskimo Joe's for years but never had the chance to see what all the fuss was about for myself. Until recently.
Typically the great thing about college towns is the great college bars. Eskimo Joe's is certainly at the forefront of this thought.
Honestly I probably would have driven right by Stillwater heading south on I-35 if I had not seen their giant billboard. I'm glad I did. Located about 15 minutes off of the interstate it is well worth the side-trip if you are looking for a place to grab a bite. I can assume that it's only better on a football weekend when the OSU Cowboys are playing at home.
I walked in on a Friday afternoon and the joint was already jumping. It looked to be a pretty good mix of locals and the touristy types. Since it was just myself I opted for a seat at the bar where they also happen to serve the full menu. Score.
I opted for their open face special with some fried mushrooms as appetizers. The basket of mushrooms was pretty big. Easily enough for two or three people. The special was an open faced burger topped by their chili. I'm not sure that the burger is handmade on the premises, but the chili was really pretty good and an excellent compliment to the beef.
Beyond the food the service was great. Â Given that I was decked out in a Huskers hat and t-shirt I felt a bit like I was wading into enemy territory. But I didn't need to worry. Every employee there had a smile and a great attitude.
All in all Eskimo Joe's lived up to the legend. Happy I stopped in.
I frequented Joe's during my years at OSU and although the food isn't the greatest it is a Stillwater landmark. Nothing like getting a few beers and some cheese fries or a foul thing after attending an event at Boone Pickens Stadium or historic Gallagher-Iba Arena.
At night on cool days the roof opens and the restaurant turn's into more of a bar only, DJ's usually mixing downstairs and the whole center of the place turns into a dance floor.
Locals are known to have competitions on who can walk out with the most Joes cups. These souvenir cups easily hold about 2 beers, they used to run about $5 a pop.
They have a nice gift store, where you can by their famous Joe's Shirts.
Nothing more than a fun atmosphere to drink beer and eat cheese fries in. Â The food has never been anything better than simple bar food. Â I am always reluctant to take outsiders who have heard of Eskimo Joes, but have never actually eaten at Eskimo Joes. Â The wait time is usually very long (especially on weekends and game days) and the wait staff are usually just as slow.
If you want to just hang out, drink beer, and eat cheese fries (their only good menu item), go for it. Â Otherwise, don't waste your time or money.
I detoured to Eskimo's last year after visiting the in-laws in OKC. Â
This is actually a popular place considering it was packed and there was a line on a Sunday afternoon when OSU was on winter vacation. [The location is directly across from Boone Pickens stadium.]
They have burgers and things of that nature and they're ok. Â We also bought a few coozies from the gift shop.
Worth a visit for the novelty, but that is about it. Â But keep in mind I'm on the healthier side of the decade removed from college and I live in Texas where I can buy/drink beer with alcohol in it. =p
"The Relaxer" was a yummy fruit punch concoction, though the name made me not want to relax to be rebellious (also, it sort of sounds like a name for a vibrator, no?). This is a typical college bar scene in the midwest (I guess? Haven't been to too many midwest bar scenes). The fried veggies were WAY too fried for my taste. Hard and crunchy.
They play outdated rap music. One good thing - bottomless beers on Thursdays (I wonder if they only do this in the summer?). There's a $5.00 cover to get in (for guys, girls are free). Right by OSU. I like the little Eskimo dude branded on everything, though I can't imagine it's a very P.C. image. Then again, haven't really run into many Eskimos in my life so it's hard to tell for sure.
After awhile, The Relaxer just gave me a headache.
I took some local folks here on their recommendation for lunch. Â I wasn't sure what to expect as this is definitely a college bar and I'm definitely not in college.
The cheese fries were great. Â That's one of those things I normally don't eat but when I do I'm pretty picky. Â They've got some of the best I've ever tasted. Â I also ordered a burger with bbq sauce, can't remember the name but it was cooked as ordered, tasty and large. Â
Service was quick and friendly and the drink refills never stopped coming. Â Iced tea was very good.
I'd definitely come back!
A Stillwater institution - you can't go to college in or visit this town without coming here at least once.
The food is pretty crappy and they have had issues with cleanliness standards in the past. Â This is a place you come to for drinks, some snacks, a souvenir cups, and maybe a t-shirt.
Back in the day, Thursdays nights were the most happening game in town. Â That was (and I believe still is) Ladies' Night, when the girls get free beer tickets. Â Years ago, it was Ladies' 80s Night and the music was amazing - I have some great memories from here. (including my 21st birthday...actually, I don't really remember too much of that)
The proximity to the basketball arena and football stadium make this the perfect place for a pre-game or post-game beer.
Ehh, I've never been a huge fan of the food here. The cheese fries are great but that's about it. You mainly go for the bar, t-shirts and to collect the cups. I still have about twenty.
Do I still always shout at people wearing the shirts when I see them in major cites outside of OK? You bet.
If you're in town you should go if you haven't been ....
Ah, college. What fond memories I have...
Enter Eskimo Joe's, Stillwater's Jumpin' Little Juke Joint.
Atmosphere: Very cool. Wooden floors, stair cases, plenty of tables, three bars, rooms upon rooms to explore, pool tables and live music. It's connected to the Joe's Store - perfect hotspot for "tourists."
Food: Very bar-esque. You won't find anything that wows you, unless you have a weakness for cheese fries. Try 'em with the cajun blackened chicken. Mmm! Plus, EJ's has the Little Joe on special once a week. That's a 50-cent basic hamburger that'll feed the kiddies and hungry college kids alike.
Drinks: Very good bar with friendly bartenders. At least that's what I remember. The signature drink is the Skylab. They'll only serve a person three, it's suppose to be so potent. I like Ladies Night, where ladies get beer tickets to drink for free. It's your standard icky domestic beer, but it's not half-bad when you squeeze in a couple limes.
Service: Pretty good! It's your typical college-friendly employer, with kids waiting tables to support whatever bad habits they pick up during college. The staff all wear Joe's t-shirts, which is pretty cool. It's like a collective whole here. While I hear the management can be pretty irritating, overall the people I know who have worked here have had a pretty great experience.
To college students, Eskimo Joe's is most known for Thursday nights, Ladies Night. No cover for ladies and we can drink for free. Plus, there's music and a small dance floor, which can be insanely pack as the night wears on. Don't expect to find the latest techno beats here, though (unless it's a special occasion), for Eskimo Joe's caters to radio-friendly, mainstream music, like Beyonce, Nelly and 50 Cent. But, hey, it's college. And you can't go to Oklahoma State and not, at least once or twice, stumble drunk out of Eskimo Joe's front steps.
I went to the University of Alabama, the University of Texas, and George Washington for college. Â Obviously, the third spot has no college flair, however, I found no bar either at the University of Alabama or at the University of Texas which rivals Stillwater's Eskimo Joe's in the all-important dive bar category. Â This place had everything I wanted: good food, internet access, and a smoking hot, friendly waitress.
The roof was a huge skylight partially blocked with single colored rainbow banners. Â Weird. Â Of course, there was the requisite amount of Oklahoma State paraphenalia. Â The floor was wood and the sides are either wood, rock, or plaster (which is oddly cool). Â There were plenty of TVs for sports watching. Â My waitress Erica was super friendly and had been patient with me despite my various odd requests (ex. can i switch seats so that i can get a better wireless signal?).
In any event, should I somehow find myself in Stillwater, OK for work again, I shall definitely find my way back to Eskimo Joe's...
I frequented this place often during my college years in Stillwater. It's THE place to hang out for college students and enjoy cheese fries, which is done to perfection. My mom tried her first cheese fries at this restaurant and now she counts cheese fries as one of her favorite American foods.
Eskimo Joe's serves drinks in its signature plastic tumblers, which are made from plastic of different colors. Many people collect these tumblers. I tried to but I didn't find a good use for them. After all, how many tumblers does a college girl need?
They also sell Eskimo Joe's memorabilia, notably its famous T-Shirts. Eskimo Joe's = good memories.
Used to work at Joe's in the kitchen. Â I still use cooking stuff learned there, today. Â And I find they do a lot of stuff right.
My favorite is the Foul Thing. Â Butter-flied chicken breast, grilled with a pineapple slice on top. Â The chickens are marinated every morning in a vacum tumbler. Â Gives them that flavor and juiciness through and through.
The fries are also great. Â Cut with the skin on and double-fried, Belgian-style. Â Makes them crispy throughout without burning them. Â And the cheese that goes on top, Sargento, the good stuff. Â None of that vegetable oil filler stuff.
'Course you've got the other great things about Joe's: Â The hot college waitresses, the old bar, the beer specials, big Joe's cups of beer and live bands.
