Okay so I have to start this by being honest. I went here for lunch as a joke. I had never heard of Fatz (not from the area) and thought the name was a bit ridiculous. I also do not usually head to chain restaurants. I'm staying at a hotel close to the restaurant and figured it had to be better than all of the fast food options nearby.
Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by very friendly staff. I was sat in a comfortable and clean booth near the bar. The restaurant's decor make it seem like a higher-end casual dining chain, but better in that it is tasteful and attractive.
My server, Eric, was very pleasant. He took my drink order and returned with my soda and a piece of calabash chicken to try. I had never had calabash-anything before this visit so I was interested. It was extremely delicious. The chicken was fresh and juicy, the breading was flavorful and just downright good.
I ordered a calabash shrimp wrap and broccoli. After taking my order, the server returned with a basket of rolls. They seemed like they were poppyseed yeast rolls. They were very good, even though they were very buttery.
My food was delivered very quickly. I dug right in and found that the calabash shrimp was just as good as the chicken! They were essentially calabash popcorn shrimp served on a wrap with spicy ranch, tomato, lettuce and cheese. It was all done well. It sounds simple but I will tell you that I have had far more poorly assembled wraps in my life than good ones, so this was a nice surprise.
I decided to box half of the wrap because I kept smelling something sweet and amazing from the kitchen. I ordered peach cobbler.
I'm a northerner - I know nothing about fried chicken (or anything fried, really), and I now know that I also knew NOTHING about peach cobbler. It was sinful.
It wasn't just some cobbler thrown on a plate. It was fantastic. It was a mix of fresh peaches, walnuts, brown sugar, brown butter, cobbler crust, and vanilla bean ice cream.
Honestly, I'm no fan of chains - like I have said - but this one is definitely good enough to return to. Â
Oh! Also, they have free wifi for guests. Nicely done, Fatz.
I do not usually review chain restaurants since I really like to keep my money local. Â But Fatz is a statewide chain so money does stay in South Carolina at least. Â I have come to Fatz ever since it opened in Orangeburg. Â I have always received good food with good portions and at a resonable price. Â The big draw is Calabash Chicken but the regional favorites like Shrimp & Grits is also very good. Â The dinner rolls are fried dough with honey butter - what could be better than that. Â The ribs are very fall off the bone good. Â Sometimes for dinner my wife and I order a full rack with 2 fully loaded baked pototos, which is plenty of food. Â A full bar with a good beer selection makes this a well rounded place.
Review Source:Came in at 7:30pm, told 15-20 minutes, after 30 minutes noticed many 3 and 4 tops getting seated yet we came earlier. Asked desk, he said "Oh Yeah" sorry and seated us. Waited 5 minutes before being greeted. Finally greeted, not given setups, had to ask. Asked if we wanted rolls, got them after about 5 minutes, still not setups. Ordered, salad just okay, Iced Tea good, ordered 6 oz sirloin, was luke warm at best, broccoli cold, had to send back. wife had Aloha chicken, she said it was okay, son had Parm crusted Chix, he said cold pasta, chicken alright. Never complained, just felt no need, they on their own recognized bad experience and did not charge us. We would not return.
Review Source:Appearance: Â Not particularly attractive or clean more tired and worn.
Starter: Â Rolls & cinnamon butter (rolls were doughy and butter rancid)
Salad: Â OK
Sides: Â Sweet potatoes - burned, Baked potato with chives - OK but chives they weren't, more like green onion tops
Steak - OK
Pork Chop - OK
Ribs - Good
Service - friendly but forgetful waitress had to be reminded a lot
Would not go back.
Atmosphere: Been to one, been to'um all chain restaurant. Clean and pretty nice though.
Service: A bit slow for my taste but friendly and willing to accommodate.
Food: Run of the mill chain steakhouse/family grill. Best thing here in my opinion are the poppy-seed rolls.
Bottom-line: It's better than fastfood or greasy diner if your on the road.
Good food at a good price. Â You get a LOT of food so consider splitting an entree after the luscious dinner roles with whipped honey cinnamon butter. Â It's not gourmet, it's comfort food and quite comforting at that. Â There are lighter fare items on the menu that look creative and tasty. Â With 48 locations, Fatz should have consistency from location to location but you never know. Â I would eat here again.
Review Source:Yelp finally steered me wrong. Â This place is a wannabe Applebees (not a lofty goal). Â The Cobb salad took 25 minutes and had cold chicken breast that tasted like it came out of a portion-controlled plastic wrapper. Â I hoped the "signature dressing" wasn't bottled... Now I wish it was. Â The thousand island was awful. Â The very friendly bartender who served me is the only reason it received two stars.
Review Source:I've never been to a Fatz before, but apparently it's a popular chain in the Carolinas. The decor is like a Ruby Tuesday & we actually had to wait to be seated.
They have a somewhat limited menu, primarily consisting of meat.
We had the Ribeye dinner with mashed potatoes & a Caesar salad and the Sampler Platter with soup & veggies. it was quite a good meal.
Ribeye - 5 stars
Sampler Platter - 4 1/2 stars
Soup - 4 1/2 stars
Caesar salad - 3 stars
Beer - 4 stars
Wine - 2 stars
Service (Ron) - 5 stars
A fun place...
I love this place! Â I found Fatz by accident while on a road trip through South Carolina -- what a great find! I have been to Fatz twice and both visits have been great. Â The staff is super friendly and really nice. The food is delicious! The Maple Plank Salmon is excellent and I can't say enough about the Fried Green Tomatoes! The ribs are absolutely delectable! Even the sweet tea is superb! Fatz is a must!
