Last Friday my fiancée and I had a weekend getaway to Kent to visit the falls and enjoy the local hot spots. We had passed by the Fife'n Drum restaurant on our way to our bed and breakfast and decided to stop in. We expected a a menu consistent with pub grub. Boy where we blown away!

The menu was inventive and made it very difficult to choose a meal. It all looked so good. My fiancée asked for a recommendation from our waiter Dylan, whom by the way was amazing, incredibly helpful and attentive waiter. She ended up with an amazing Chicken Tikka Masala, and I ended up with a special of the night, a Jerk Encrusted Pork medallions on a bed of mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. We finished it off with a Cobbler ala mode.

Oh and I forgot to mention a band was performing during our meal, this made the night even more memorable.

I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Thanks again Dylan for making it a great night.

So we came here for dinner a couple of weekends ago because, frankly, this was the only place that was open in Kent over the winter.  We were going to go to Doc's but sadly discovered that they were closed - permanently.

I was not very enthused about the prospect because, well, this is such an institution in town and known more for the ambiance than the food.  As evidenced by my four star review, I was very, very pleasantly surprised.  I had the French Onion soup to start and the lamb sirloin entree.  The soup was okay.  Not the best French Onion I've had, but perfectly serviceable.  The main problem was that it was basically just salty with not very much subtlety.

But my entree - the lamb sirloin - was legitimately amazing.  It was a very generous portion, was cooked perfectly medium rare, had a great gamy lamb flavor, and was just one of the best lamb dishes I had ever had.  The sauce with the mashed potatoes (I think it was some sort of red wine reduction) was also very tasty.

My companion had a special fried cauliflower entree, which was very well done.  Her pork entree was extremely tender and flavorful.

The ambiance in the restaurant was very loud.  It was hard to have a conversation over all the noise.  The service was fine, although trying a bit hard to be sophisticated.  All in all, I would definitely recommend this place for food in Kent (despite my prior reservations) with the lamb dish a particular favorite.

One of my favorites in the area. You can never go wrong. Food is great and ambiance.
    Waiters and staff are courteous.

Arrived as the lunch shift was ending. The 8 of us spent the afternoon enjoying wine and snacks in  the bar area and followed it with a great dinner.  The service and the food were both very good. The atmosphere was cozy with a warm fire and live piano music.  I had the lobster risotto appetizer and short ribs .  The short ribs were delicious.  I would try a different appetizer next time. Everyone in my group was happy and commented that they enjoyed their meals and the experience. One drawback for the parents in my group was that the restrooms did not provide a changing table for their toddler.  I would definitely return to this restaurant .  CLOSED ON TUESDAYS.

Visited Fife n Drum for what was supposed to be a quick drink and ended up being an entire afternoon, first at the bar, then decided to stay for dinner.  Love this place!  William E. suggests that the place is a step back in time, and I suppose it is - but the place is really nice, the music was all great classics (a la Sinatra, etc.)...  Valerie M. suggests that the place needs an upgrade.  I couldn't disagree more.  It maintains a charm that is cozy, comfortable and welcoming.  The staff was just as friendly and accommodating as could be.  Most reviews mention Dolph, who we got to meet, but more interesting was being able to meet his daughter, Elissa (sp?), who really treated us wonderfully.  The food was very good.  I had the potato bacon bisque for an appetizer, which was good.  Had the pork loin for dinner which was also tasty.  Again, the staff was very attentive and accommodating, which really rounds out the stay well.

Would I recommend them to you?  Absolutely!  I'm fairly snobbish about where I eat and although insanely good food is important to me, service is also a requirement.  I would honestly call the meal "good" and the service "very good".  All in all, worth visiting and worth a return visit.  We only got to catch Dolph playing a single song, because we were there early, but WOW - GREAT PIANO PLAYER!

If you're in the area, you will not be disappointed with Fife n Drum.

The Inn is a step back in time and could use a major upgrade, from the shag carpet to the dim lighting. The place is more of a motel than an inn with a bed and no breakfast. If you are planning on just sleeping there it's doable.

This place suggests a step back in time as the owners are the same for over 40 years.  Dolph, who is 93, and his wife still work 6 days a week with the help of their daughter.  Dolph on the piano is a real treat, btw he has been playing 5 hours a day 6 days a week for over 40 years.  The menu current, including pricing but worth every penny.

Yes, this is a local favorite-- but who knows WHY?  I grew up in Kent so I understand the local cliques, people meet here to socialize, and old habits die hard.  But if you're looking for good food, go elsewhere (like Doc's).  My most recent (and probably final) visit to the Fife: Roasted chicken that was cooked to exhaustion, tasting like a rubber tire; a side of "stuffing" that included large chunks of something slippery and slimy, perhaps skin?  Disgusting.  There are many better options in the area.

Nice atmosphere, decent food.  A good stop if you are in the Litchfield Hills.

In the midst of a town recovering from a power outage, we had limited dinner options and wound up at Fife & Drum. The atmosphere was pleasant with a fire and intermittent live piano performances, but we were underwhelmed by the food, especially for the price.

We started with a salad, which had a good flavor and the most tasty lentils I've ever had. The Salmon was decent, but the Oven Baked Tilapia was disappointing with some of the fish not tasting very fresh.

Overall, a good spot for a drink and entertainment - just come by after dinner.

The Fife is a favorite locally, and they live up to their reputation.  The pub menu is varied and delicious, and if you want something fancier, the dining room offers larger, more expensive fare.  They change the menu every few months, but their standards (duck, filet mignon, caesar salad) are wonderful.  My favorite fall special is their butternut squash ravioli.  Their specials menu is large and covers a range of options, as does the dessert menu.

The atmosphere is old but cozy. I love this place, and I try to make once a week, even if just for a burger. The staff are friendly and professional, and the service is good.  Make the trip if you can.

This is my second time at this restaurant. We got the rib-eye and the filet, and they were both great. The service was efficient, but lacked in warmth. All in all, a better experience this time.

My parents came to vist and we went out for lunch to their favorite restaurant in town, Fife n Drum.  As usual the food was delicious and the was service good.

We each had soup, lobster bisque for my mom.  This is the only place she orders it, she loves it.  My dad and I had the french onion soup, it was just right.

For lunch my mom ordered the grilled cheese; gruyère and prosciutto with tomato. It was rich and filling.  My dad had the Cheddar Burger, cooked to perfection as he likes it, medium rare.  I had the  Pear and Dried Cherry Salad minus the bacon and added chicken. The chicken tasted wonderful, it was moist and tasted like "real" chicken, not over cooked for being so thin.

It is a special treat to eat here and should not be missed if you are in the area.

They prepare the caesar salad next to your table. They flambe duck and beef tenderloin next to your table. They have steak and fish and duck on the menu. They have a real live piano player. They have a bar. They have custom made pewter plates.

This place is old school fine dining. Presentation and atmosphere matter more than food. Service should be good...but wasn't.

We waited ten minutes for menus and water. We had to ask for the check. I had to get up and ask someone to take my credit card for payment so we could leave.

The steaks delivered to the table were over cooked. The meat was OK...just over cooked. The caesar salad was pretty good. The panna cotta was competent.

But, oh, oops, the prices were all downtown prices. So, hmmm,,,expensive food, not well prepared, poorly served...I think that gets 2 stars.
