Went tonight with some friends, against the advisory of severe weather (Ppppffffttt! Rain, yeah right, I wish!) This place once again totally rocked! Loved it! It never fails! Tuesday night is rib night, it's the only night I've ever been. This was my third trip and again it was fantastic! Ribs were fall-off-the-bone good, and the blackberry cobbler with two large dollops of vanilla ice cream served in a clear, crystal goblet. So good, it makes you want to cry, and I think I did, a couple of times...We had a friend, a native Shreveporter, in our party of three, who is in between things in New York City and Los Angeles, just home for a stretch. He had never been to Avinger. He loved the restaurant from the time we walked in. He said, "I can tell you right now just by the look of this place, that I love it, already." His love only blossomed after consuming the ribs and the cobbler.

New info: They now have apple cobbler, in addition to peach and blackberry. My coastal friend also became all teary-eyed over the apple cobbler. (Actors, they're so emotional, ya know?)

Also: And all three of us went nuts on this little factoid, they now serve...wait for it...Big Red on tap!!!!!! Yaaaaaaaaaaay! Big Red!!!!! We were all so excited by this, we were just pounding Big Red! Anyone up for Big Red stands? Big Red! Big Red! Big Red! My friends switched from Diet Coke when I noticed this on the menu. The waitress said people hardly ever order Big Red. I said, "If you're in Texas. You drink Big Red!"
She thought this was funny and started serving it to us out of a pitcher. (Could it be any better?) Our waitress was excellent! Great service! Great food! Right here in this little bitty town in northeast Texas, about an hour's drive from Shreveport. Ain't nothing like it in L.A. or N.Y.C.! And we love it!

This place has a great old-west ambiance. It is in a building from the mid-1800's. Avinger is in the middle of nowhere in the Northeast Texas Piney Woods.  Overall, a couple of notches better than the typical Texas Roadhouse, and maybe a couple dollars cheaper, which helps pay for the gas.

The hostess sat us at a table with a fan two feet away from us. Her reason - "it can get pretty hot over here in this corner".

The bread is hot, fresh and homemade. In a word, it is outstanding. The Caesar salad had dressing that obviously came out of a tub (yuk). Our waiter was country as a corn cob but he was very nice and relatively accomodating. They serve a decent steak. Not a great steak - a decent steak. It is seasoned and cooked well. If they would use just a little higher quality cut of meat, it would be superb. I had a bite of my son's chicken fried steak and it was great. I would come back for the CFS.

The decor is dark lit, brick building with cattle company motif. Works well.

For a town of 400+ people way out of the way, this is a nice little diversion. I would definitely come back. Smiley face.
