I love the fact that this cool old pub has been restored. We need more of this type of restoration going on Downtown and little by little things are looking up. Gerber's is a fun place to pop in and grab a drink. You feel like you are stepping back in time. No fancy decor, no loud music, no gimmicks. The bartender was friendly and attentive. I will say they do need a cocktail menu, as another reviewer pointed out. A few special drinks could set this place apart from other pubs in Utica.

Where's the cocktail menu? Here we are in a newly renovated 1930's tavern and no cocktail list!  Big miss on the owners part. Come up with a few fun cocktails & get people in the mood. Gin Fizz? Pink Lady? Side Car? Train your bartender too. He looked the part but had zero charm. Barely smiled, didn't talk the place up, and had no creative recommendations for a drink. Doesn't make for a good 1st impression.

Went there today for lunch.  7/2/13. The service was slow and their servers weren't friendly at all. The place wasn't overly busy either.  We walked in and just stood there. No-one acknowledged our presence as we stood there. The bar tender wasn't busy, he just stood there and didn't even give us eye-contact. So much for making customers feel welcome. Finally the waitress spoke to us as she was serving drinks to other customers. We almost left, as we felt so uncomfortable!!!!  I thought the inside of the restaurant was quite lovely. Parking was a problem also.  I had to go around the block twice until I found a place in front of the Taylor and Cooks place. I felt the bologna sandwich platter was a bit pricey for what I received.  $9.99 plus $1.95 for my iced-tea. I won't be going back anytime soon . The food was good considering.. I'm all for helping out a new business and a local person get on their feet. But they better re-evaluate there help. Because they can either make or break your business.......!!! And today, they broke it, as  far as we were concerned.

If you want to step back in time to the 1930's, then stop by Gerber's 1933 Tavern for a cold Utica Club and a sandwich.
This building has been dormant since 1976 and has recently been restored to its former glory.

It was originally "Gerber's Grill"  which closed in 1976. But the original bar, light fixtures, and sign out front have all survived and are now part of the newly renovated building.

They have a full bar, and a small menu based on an original menu found in a drawer from the previous "Gerber's Grill". I've been told the menu changes daily.

I had a ham and swiss sandwich with a side of kettle chips, and Mac salad. Very good, everything was VERY fresh.
For dessert I had easily the best slice of apple pie I've ever had, with a fresh cup of coffee from the Utica Roasting Co. that is located up the street.

I have always wondered what it was like inside this building, but never knew since it was closed years before I was even born. Now I can finally eat a Gerber's Grill!

I give the owners a lot of credit for putting love into this building, and at the same time helping the regrowth of a depressed area.
