I live in the Richmond area and have been a fan of Gillums for years. The owner and his wife are very friendly and accommodating people. The location is strange, but it somehow works for this place. It used to be a BW3's many years ago, but has since been classed up a bit by the current owner.
There are three items on the menu that feel are the best:
1. Pizza
Gillums pizza is incredible, no matter what kind you order. Jeff's' pizza has a good reputation going back to previous establishments he has owned. It's a traditional round pizza cut up into square pieces that are sprinkled up with a proper amount of spices. They have added a couple new ones recently like the Greek and Baked potato.
2. Wings
The wings are way better than the 'other' wing joint in town. They come in several sauces and are reasonably priced. Unlike the 'other' place, you don't have to pay extra for dipping sauces.
3. Burgers
Burgers are amazing. Big patties, lots of toppings to choose from. Best burger in town. Fries and onion rings are better than the majority of steakhouses can come up with.
Last but not least is the laid back, low key atmosphere. Lots of tv's, but low volume- except for UK games. No college kids acting like morons, mostly working class crowd looking to have a quality meal and a cold drink from one of the many beers on tap.
This place was a random stop to catch the Bengals game on a road trip back to Cincinnati.
We were looking for a place in KY that was non-smoking, or at least patio smoking, that also served beer. Gillum's seemed to fit the bill nicely. We were a little worried at first with it being down from the highway, and supposedly in a mall, but we were soon put at ease. Yes its in a mall, well, rather its attached to a mall. Its on a somewhat corner next to the Sears entrance in Richmond Mall. It actually has a bar outside, and tables and chairs taking up both sides of the entrance, which at first is a little weird, seeing as its a mall entrance... but thats Kentucky for you I guess. That and they make due with the room their given.
This place upon first look is reminiscent of a Buffalo Wild Wings, in that there are a few big screen tvs set up and a bunch of smaller ones on every wall of the place. There is also a back area, where the rowdier crowd tends to sit. I guess this area is also for steelers nation (ugh :P ) when the games are on. We had 6 of us so we took a round table in the more "dining room" type area, but there were other fans there too so it wasn't too bad.
The food was amazing! They had an insane selection! Appetizers, wings, pizza big enough to share, sides burgers, steak, salads, you name it! I ended up with the chicken quesedilla app and it was huge! and really really good. Just the right amount of stuffing and kick. The mozzarella cheese moons are also to die for! They were playing the steelers game over the loud speakers unfortunately, and it did take a little prodding, but eventually the manager did turn the close captioning on the Bengals game for us so we could at least figure out the calls. Everyone was nice though regardless of team affiliation. And yes smoking was allowed outside on the patio, which was nice to see in a KY bar.
Supposedly this place is one of the only ones that can sell hard liquor as they are somehow over the dry-county line. Just an fyi. But seriously, whether you're in the area, or just passing through, this is a great place to stop!
Kind of strange to find a sports bar in the Richmond Mall, since the mall is mostly deserted. Â Heard about this place from a friend and so naturally I had to try it out.
The wings are among the best Ive ever had. The pizza was also good. Â Gillum's is a typical sports bar except for one difference - the food is better. Â Their menu is diverse. Â Wraps, salads, Philies, steaks, fish, etc. Also, unlike many sports bars, there are side dishes other than fries and onion rings. You can choose from steamed vegetables, salads, potatoes, asparagus, and on and on.
They also have a private party room and deliver.
