Golden Wheel used to be our go to chinese restuarant a few years back. But over time this place has dropped DRASTICALLY in service and taste. A group of us went out for dinner Saturday night, we ordered appetizers (the bbq pork tasted funky and was very dry) and entrees. The side of chow mein that came with them was a mound of celery and onions with about a tablespoon of noodles at the very bottom. The food was very sub par overall. I was embarrassed that I brought people here! I will not be returning.
Review Source:Okay, my family has frequented the Golden Wheel since the 70's - it was the only Chinese restaurant my father would eat at. However, in the mid-2000's the quality of this place slipped drastically. Wait staff was lax about getting coffee during many visits. The food is seriously hit & miss. One time we go in and it tastes like the old times, other times I wouldn't feed it to my dog (and he would eat just about anything). Â The service and the food is just too spotty anymore, and it's getting worse each time we go. It is to the point that it's a last resort for a night out for the entire family when we're meeting up with my parents. It saddens me because this place was once great. However, until some serious re-vamping is done, I'd suggest going somewhere else and save yourself the headache.
Review Source:Just in town for a couple of days - was looking for some good, classic Chinese food. This was not the place. I didn't like anything I ordered (fried rice, chicken chow mein, some kind of prawns... I think sweet and sour...) Â Everything was a bit mushy and did not taste good. I pulled off the breading of the prawns.. they did not even attempt to devein them... and they tasty fishy. (yes, I realize they are shrimp... but I hate fishy shrimp)
My guess is this is a nice place for some locals - who are looking for a quiet, dark, but familiar atmostphere - where they know all the staff. They probably stop in 3 times a week and order the cheesburger and fries (or chicken) -- yes, the menu has those things. It might be a very nice place for that .
Other reviews mention the owner and staff are nice - and friendly.
The price is good... a chinese lunch plate for about $6.95. Burgers were probably inexpenisve as well.
Truly I think the cooking needs a major overhaul.
We had dinner tonight to celebrate my brother's birthday. The restaurant was excessively hot, and everyone at my table was uncomfortable. There was fried chicken mixed in with the fried prawns, Â There was a bone in my chicken chow mein. Spare ribs were in a heavy brown sauce that is pretty tasteless. Â On a bright note, the waitress was quite excellent and attempted to fix what I told her about; unfortunately there was so much wrong I didn't want to keep complaining in front of my family. For the quality of food, Golden Wheel is way overpriced.
