The Great Escape, otherwise known as the VFW to most, is one of those institutions for many who live in Menomonie. It is most known for Wednesday night wings. Every Wednesday, local UW-Stout students and locals come through the door in droves for all-you-can-eat wings; not to mention a side of brew city fries and Texas toast. Don't forget the $5 pitchers of beer to accompany those wings on Wednesday nights!
As you step in the door, you know you're in Wisconsin. A dark gloomy bar atmosphere welcomes you with open arms, complete with compressed sawdust tables and cheap metal chairs. "The Dub" has a few LCD TVs to watch the game, but by no means is this a sports bar.
The preferred day to check this place out is a Wednesday night, but their menu also has some great burgers if wings aren't your thing. I usually get the Sparky Burger, a giant burger with two massive patties complete with gooey cheese and strips of smoked bacon. My fiance recommends the mushroom & swiss burger!
Pretty much anything on their menu is less than $10. Wednesday wings will cost you about $8, until your stomach bursts.
The VFW is a huge piece of the UW-Stout community and it's Wednesday night wing tradition.
