I had just left the YEE at the Hotel Paradox. I was putting my Whip Black Beauty through the Paces on Highway 1 . I Zoomed by Highway 1 Brewing Company and it peaked my Curiosity . So I made a U turn a few miles down and returned to Highway 1 Brewing Company. I stashed Black Beauty in the  ample Parking lot.

I rolled into Highway 1 Brewing Company and was Greeted and Seated by the Hostess.  I perused the menu and ordered- a Chile Verde Pork Street Taco and Coastal Crab Cakes with a Side of Aioli and Chipotie Slaw.

I also ordered a India Pale Ale . It was very refreshing.

My Street Taco and Crab Cakes arrived. And they were Delish especially the Crab Cakes Yummy!!!

I ordered a Chocolate Stout Brownie topped with House Made Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.

It was a Rich and Sweet Treat Yum Yum.

They had live Music in the Bar Area. Its a nice place to Stop for a Meal or a Drink.

I paid by Discover Card and Rolled out.

What a find! Followed the magical brewery sign and ended up at one of the chillest establishments I've ever visited. Nice staff, comfy beer garden, and great beer! Also, the buffalo cauliflower was amazing! I'd seriously think about driving an hour and a half to get some more if I had a car.

Great place and we will certainly go back. We have always been looking for a place to stop on our way to Santa Cruz. They did a very nice remodeling job and we especially like the bar area with Ocean view.
And yes, Jeff knows how to brew beer... He actually spent time with us and gave us a tour / intro to his brewing equipment and process.
Very friendly service and good food variety make this a excellent place on the coast. Families are welcome and we can highly recommend the place.

We just stopped in for a quick visit following a poor experience at another eatery up the road. The staff was attentive and kind. Our small to-go order was treated as if it was the big sell of the day. Good luck to this establishment, I will be back when I have more time.

Absolutely loved this place! Great atmosphere and wonderful beer. I had the artichoke dip and it was delicious. It was only an appetizer but could be a full meal for one person, which is great! The desserts are off the hook! Coming back soon.

Fathers Day lunch.  About 3/4 full.  Only 3 of their own brews on tap.  Took about 10 minutes to get a waitress to come to the table.  Finally got to order, food did not come out together (my burger, then appetizer, daughters meal came after my burger was almost done, then we had to ask for my sons meal which came when my daughter was almost finished).  Beer was almost fair, after their tasting flight to 3 whole beers, I ended up drinking a guest beer instead.  We also watched as many other tables got service as bad, or even worse than we did.  I live local and ride by this place regularly ... I will keep riding by.

Wow, who are all these people rating this place 5 stars???  Must be the owners or employees.  First, I've driven by this place many times, and my wife and I finally stopped by the other day.  We left thinking, "Damn, should've checked Yelp!"  GUESS NOT!

Where do I begin?  First, their beer is HORRIBLE and a rip off.  Most places let you sample their taps for free.  The bartender asked if we wanted to sample their three in-house brews.  I thought it was going to be free.  Holy crap!  $1.75 for EACH SMALL SAMPLE!  WOW.  And, all three samples put together wouldn't even make half a pint.  What a freaking RIP OFF.  Second, all of their beer is SH!T.  Absolute SH!!T!!!   What kind of brewer only puts out beer with ABV's around 5%???  No self respecting brew master would put out that kind of garbage.  A good beer should ABV at around 7-8%.  A really good beer should be above 9%.  Epic beer is above 11-12% (although, way too boozy for me).  These guys can't even do beer right.  Also, it's not just the alcohol content, but the beer was just horrible.  One was complete skunk.  They probably had an infected batch, and any good brew master would have chucked the whole damn thing.  These guys served it.  NASTY.  The other two beers were just as bad.  Third, their other brews they had on tap from, I'm remembering, California microbrews were equally as bad.  Finally, the food...hmmm, two tacos with gamey tasting meats for $5.  PASS!

If you want good beer,  head to Russian River.  Best beer by far in California.

It was a normal Saturday like any other. I would always take advantage of a free day to visit a variety of restaurants. It was't until I drove up to Highway 1 Brewery Company, that I was captivated by its enchanting location and opportunity. As I walked in the brewery I was immediately captivated by this lovely singer.A young and lively server gave a table of my choosing and provided swift service despite it being a busy evening. I was there with a comrade and we shared a hamburger, buffalo fried cauliflower, and of course, a flight of beers. The cauliflower and hamburger were absolutely delicious! The French Mexican War was truly the battle to win. A flavorful bouquet of taste that sends you into a pit of delicious flavor of jalapenos and beer. I couldn't help but think of  orgasmic nachos.

I also want to mention I did not just come here to eat, but I was on a mission. A mission from my environmental problems and solutions class to do research on restaurants and their sustainability practices. These folks not only buy everything organic from local farmers but they also use non industrial produced yeast which tastes better and is healthier for the consumer.

Overall it was a great experience I hope to return soon with my classmates. They also have a free arcade game! Wahoooo! They also provide free wifi, when you come here take it as an opportunity to escape from reality when you sit down and view the ocean. The prices are the also the best I've seen around =).

We walked in here this Sunday with no expectations and with our New Jersey license plates we seemed to become the talk of the town with all stating faces from when we parked (other customers). The staff however was grey, friendly, helpful and courteous. And the place serves a nice variety of very affordable and tasty food. Nothing standard but even some unexpected nice combos. Will come back when in the neighbourhood.

I am willing to revisit this, but for now, I have to give a horrible review for last night's experience. It wasn't even normal bad, but ridiculously "wtf?" bad. Getting our order wrong, our bill wrong multiple times, LOSING our debit card, and no one at all addressing the issue (thus far, at least.)

My husband and I ordered nachos and two beers. Our friends split a cider and spinach artichoke dip. There were only a couple other people on the bar side so not sure how that got so confusing, but we ended up getting extra nachos as we started giving up on the dip coming. We said we hadn't ordered them, but if they were no one else's, fine, we'll take them.

Then the bill came. When we saw ours we thought of course we'll pay for the second nachos we didn't order since we ate them, but we're vegetarian and know we had not had pork on them. It also had two extra drinks on it that no one at our table had. Husband gave debit card but asked for a fix. The girl tried to argue we had ordered pork on the second nachos, so we explained no, we didn't even order those at all, but they came vegetarian and it's the only reason we accepted them.

Then friends prepare to pay for their bill--including the second nachos we didn't order...No, no, no. We're both getting charged for these? We will pay but ONCE. I ask for them to fix our friend's bill since it was already on ours. We get the bills back--now they are exactly as each other. Ugh. Okay, go back to explain bills are wrong AGAIN. They fix it. Fine. Now can we have our debit card back?

And this is the icing on the cake. After waiting and waiting and asking repeatedly, the girl finally admits she has no idea where the card went. She offered no apologies, but did want us to feel sorry for her. "My manager is really mad, I could get fired." Well, I'm not feeling too bad for her by now, so what should we do though? Is she still looking? She says she likely gave it to someone else so "I'd cancel my card if I were you." So, no apologies from the server, but also--her manager KNEW she did this but never came to say anything to us? Other places have screwed up our bill before. I understand it happens (though this was already especially bad) but we never gave negative reviews for it before because they FIXED it. And no one has ever just straight up lost our card like that, which granted is beyond what can be fixed, but how about even recognizing and taking responsibility for this?

My new favorite destination-drive rewards me with interesting tasty craft brews and fun-to-share bites in a happy setting, and depending on where I sit, an ocean view.

They also serve guest craft beers to supplement any holes in their current in-house brew offerings. That's good customer service!

Buzzing down Hwy-1 again, we stopped once again at the brewery. "Jeff" the brewer, greeted us again-actually remembered us (could have been the "Guy Fieri hats" my wife and I wore before...and again) and our bartender "Skye" also greeted and remembered us. We had the deep fried green beans and cauliflower, WOW!! They are both done just to that fine edge of the oil being too hot, but making for crispy crust, and great taste. We will continue to make this a required stop every time we;re in the area on Hwy-1, it's a good business that keeps getting better.
Had a Black IPA, yummy and a true IPA taste. CHEERS!!

LOVE Highway 1 Brewing Company! I am not a big beer drinker, so why go to a brewery? The location is awesome & I'd hears such great things. I had the IPA and the Black IPA - yummy!

I also had the crabcakes to go, which were a wonderful size & full of delicious crab, not filler. It comes with a cole slaw, which not being a big mayo fan, I was a bit leary, but this was not your grocery store cole slaw - also very delicious. I saw the green beans come out of the kitchen & will need to try those next.

Plus, I got to meet the new owners, Melissa & Jeff. Jeff is also the brewer and has recently had to leave his job to keep up with the demand. Love a new locally owned business doing well!

Great Vegetarian food with a beer?  Come to the HWG1 Brewing Company, it is a bit far south from San Fran on the pacific coast drive, don't expect to find all of the beers they brew available, this was mentioned on another review and sure enough, but the beers on tap are very good, and the nice scenery away from civilization next to ocean away from it all made it worth it.  Very relaxing place to sit down and drink a cold one.

This is the perfect brew pub.

The food is excellent, the beer is delicious.  Normally I'm a wine drinker, but when we go to Highway one, the beer is so good, I make an exception.

Their ambiance is just right, the perfect balance of class and soul.  We stop here every time we drive south from SF.  They have had some awesome live bands too!  Last week was a blues band that we stayed an extra hour just to listen to!

Although I love everythign I've ever eaten there, their buffalo wings dish that they make out of...cauliflower ...yes you heard me right, cauliflower....was unreal delicious!  We love Highway 1 and can't wait to go back again soon!!!!

What a great thing to happen in this location! They've cleaned it up, set it up to brew great beer, put together a very excellent selection of food and pub fare, got the great views... What else is there? We couldn't be happier with our experience, the beer or the food. Don't hesitate... and wish these guys well!

"I like beer. On occasion, I will even drink beer to celebrate a major event such as the fall of Communism or the fact that the refrigerator is still working."
    ~Dave Berry

Astrid and I visited Highway 1 Brewing Company (H1BC) to celebrate the fact that we were driving down Highway 1 and wanted a beer. A great reason to drink if you ask me.  I'd been meaning to stop by this new brewery near Pescadero for a couple weeks and the fact that our four wheels were in the general vicinity seemed like a perfect opportunity.

Growing up on the coast, I've seen this location go through many incarnations and most of them failed miserably. In fact this place was vacant for years. To be honest it's not in the best spot and there was never much reason to stop there anyway unless you needed terribly overpriced gasoline from the pumps next door. Its located in a hollow about 20 miles north of Santa Cruz just past Costanoa Resort. If you're buzzing by on Hwy 1 at 65 MPH, you'll almost certainly miss it.

H1BC has both a bar and restaurant seating, both have a partial view of Gazos Creek State Beach across the road. We chose to sit at the bar with a view of the sun setting. We talked to the bartender, a coastside local who was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the 1PA, a hop-forward India Pale Ale that was bitter with a hint of fruit. Astrid had the Brown Ale which she described as smooth and easy-to-drink, but a bit too bitter for her tastes. We also tried a small taste of the Peppercorn Rye, brewed with black and green peppercorns. It was delicious and only had a small hint of spiciness on the back of your tongue at the finish.

We also shared some of the small bites off the menu. I really wanted to try the Beer Battered Green Beans- they were crunchy and flash fried served with a tasty garlic aioli. Astrid wanted to try the Spicy Buffalo Cauliflower- beer battered, flash-fried, served with crisp celery and carrots and bleu cheese dip. Both dishes were fantastic but my favorite was the green beans, hands down. The cauliflower could have been a bit spicier and the dip they served with it could have had more of that bleu cheese bite. We weren't hungry enough to order dinner, but we saw some customers eating the burger which looked great as well as the taco plate. I also heard the hop fried chicken was excellent. We'll definitely have to come back and try some of the entrees.

So first blush, I really like what H1BC has going on up north. I commented to Astrid that I wished they had WiFi so I could check in on Yelp and then read the next day on their Facebook page that they just had it installed! I'm really happy that Santa Cruz is becoming a bit of a craft brew Mecca. Get on out there and support your local brewers!

    PROST!

Great place! The place is clean, open, and refreshing. The view is fantastic. I enjoyed all of the beers I tried especially the 1PA and the Brown. The 1PA was well balanced and the brown was very flavorful for a brown. The peppercorn rye was also good since the peppercorn was very subtle. Great brewer which was very present and happy to answer questions. The menu was small but a good variety with several vegetarian options. Would like to see a few more healthier option, though.

I strongly suggest checking them out.

Stopped here late one night with my parents, husband, brother and his girlfriend. We had just come from another bar and were looking for some good food. We were also celebrating my mom's 60th birthday. We were waited on by the owner Jeff and he gave amazing recommendations. When my mom didn't know what to drink or eat she told him to "surprise" her and she was not disappointed with the deep fried cauliflower and crab cakes. She is not a big beer drinker so he recommended a good wine which she loved (and boy is she picky!). Everyone else loved the beer too. I am not a beer drinker so I can't really comment on that. All in all it was great for conversation and getting to know the owners who went above and beyond to make it an enjoyable time. We felt like we were over at a friends house for dinner which is an atmosphere I enjoy in a restaurant and usually takes many times visiting. I had such a good time that t I was sparked to actually write this review which is the first one I've written on Yelp even though my husband and I use it all the time! Keep up the great work Highway 1 Brewing!

My friends raved about Highway 1's amber ales and told me I should check them out. So, I did. This is a new, small brewery, right near the ocean.

    The Food:
So, I go to breweries for the beer and usually nothing else. I had the grill cheese, however, and it was a grill cheese--a good one.

    The beer:
They had their own stuff on tap (when I was there they were out of 3 of 6 of their own taps), and a good selection of other California crafts on tap. E.g., Drakes, Green Flash, Ballast Point), and at least one from New York, Ommegang, and Angry Orchard from Ohio. Overall they had a decent selection.  As far as I recall, all the beers and ciders were American.

    Highway 1 brews:
I had the $5 house tasting flight, which is 3 5oz pours. This included Rock Queen pale ale, Amberdextrous, and a peppercorn rye (don't remember the name of it). My favorite was Rock Queen. It was crisp, citrusy, and not too bitter--an excellent beer. Amberdextrous was very flavorful, a toasty, malty beer that is probably the best out of the 3 I had. The peppercorn rye was my least favorite. It was light, smooth, more thirst-quenching than anything else, maybe just bland compared to the other two. I could, however, taste a hint of the peppercorn, which is a testament to the brewer's abilities. Overall a good beer experience.

    The customer service:
Excellent! Sincerely friendly people, focused, and helpful.

    The building:
So, the building itself sort of looks like a restaurant from the outside. Inside there are three main chambers. A dining area with around 12-14 4-seater square tables. The room has lots of large glass windows letting in the light and a view of the highway, the gas station, and only partially of the beautiful coastal sea. From most of the tables in the dining area you can't really see the ocean unless you are tall. There is a bar in the next room where there is at least one tv behind the counter. From a barstool, since the bar is a little higher up than the dining room, you can see more of the ocean. In this room is a sitdown arcade machine that has 60 arcade games on it that were popular in the 1970's and 1980's--fantastic! It's also free--Fantastic twice!! (Gyruss, Galaxian, and Galaga, man!) The bar opens into an ante-chamber (which was roped-off when I was there) consisting of various brewing equipment and components, such has bags of ingredients and so forth. This area has a small fire-place, above which is written "The Beach House." A remnant of the building's past? Maybe one day H1 will have more space for the actual brewing process and this room can be opened for customer use. Maybe this stuff is just all for show, I don't know.
I have to mention that the entire place was clean and spacious.

    The Vibe:
It was a lazy Sunday afternoon when I was there and it was quiet, with a mix of families with kids, and couples in the dining area, and there was no problem getting seated. In the bar every stool was taken but it was neither packed nor rowdy, nor loud. The place has a sort of sanitized feel to it. It's not bad, it just doesn't feel like a brewery. Don't ask what a brewery is supposed to feel like, but I know it's not quite this.

Overall: I like this place. The beer is good, and they have a nice selection. The fact that the place is clean, with excellent customer service, and classic arcade games, means I'm coming back for sure--and I'm bringing my friends.

I was their first customer at 11AM on this beautiful sunday morning, after cycling downhill from Big Basin. This place would be easy to miss while driving by, but it's really beautiful on the inside. Friendly staff, nice decor and woodwork, 3 house beers and 6 "guest taps", Worth a stop!

Great restaurant!!! My boyfriend and I drove down south of half moon bay for fun and found this place. It is very cute inside, the food is great, and they brew their own beer. We ordered the crab cake, street tacos and the nachos. All were great and the prices so reasonable. We also tried two of their house brewed beers, the amberdextrous and pepper in the rye also great. Lastly the waitress talked us into dessert that included home made ice cream. Everything was great and we walked away for only $40.

This place is so welcoming, affordable and delicious. Will definitely be stopping here on the regular.

My little family and I have been looking forward to checking out this new brewery on Hwy 1, just south of Pescadero Road in Pescadero. We finally made it for some appetizers and beers on St. Patty's day. The overall experience was great. The place looks wonderful, with 2 separate area - the main dining room that looks out onto Hwy 1. Nice and open with a lot of windows. The other room is the bar area, with some couches, hi-tables and a table top video game (score one for being family friendly!). The only negative was the service. Although the waitstaff were super nice, they were a little slow and forgetful. They just seemed like novices. Anyway, on to the food an beverage reviews!

    Review of Food:
Brussel Sprouts - delicious. Sauteed with bacon and lemon, they were easy to eat and not too buttery or greasy tasting.

Green Beans - OH MY GOSH! I have been daydreaming about them ever since I had them. They were amazing. Each green bean was dunked in their beer batter and fried to perfection. The green bean was delicate and crispy, almost protected by the batter. The batter was something that many people try to perfect for years. I think they have done it here. If I ate fried food more regularly, this would be something I would eat every day. Damn good!

    Review of beers:

IPA- bitter. Very bitter on the roof of your mouth. Hoppy but not that floral. I am a fan of a certain level of bitterness in a beer, but this was a little to overpowering for my palate.

French Mexican War- smells of jalapeño. Very obvious. Great taste. The jalapenos are not overpowering. Not skunky or bitter. Surprisingly loving this beer.

Amberdextrous - roasted malty taste right off the bat. Nutty goodness. Nice aftertaste. Not too lasting. I'd compare it to the taste of a good brown ale with it's complexity.

A Pepper in the Rye - delicious and easy to drink. No real obvious sign of peppercorn, but it sure does enhance the flavor of the rye. Well done!

Rock Queen - pale ale with spunk. Hoppy and floral. Not a dull pale ale by any means. With an ABV of 6.4%....solid. It's what I would call a Cali Pale Ale.

I love brussel sprouts but they're not easy to find on a menu - these were absolutely delicious. Everything we ate was really good but I could definitely have had 2 orders of the sprouts!. I"m not really a beer fan but decided to order the flight just to taste the homemade brew. All 3 choices were great, especially enjoyed the French Mexican War which had just a hint of jalapeno. I actually ordered another beer after the flight. I left thinking maybe I'm a beer fan afterall! The large table in the bar is a bit elevated and was a perfect place to watch the sunset.

My homebrewing boyfriend and I went there today for the first time and it was great, enjoyed the atmosphere, and the beers were all tasty! I love how nice the inside of the place is. High ceilings, lots of wood and kind of a rustic yet modern look about it.

(BTW, I write this review after going to a not-so-great brewery yesterday. I won't name names, but none of their beers appealed to me.)

Anyway, I recommend it! The Amber was probably my favorite, or the Pepper. Didn't eat there, but did have a little salty snack plate. Love the location, too. Will definitely go back and check out the food. Nice staff.

My family and I spent the day hiking at the Pescadero marsh and hanging at Bean Hollow soaking up some sunshine. We were pretty famished and wanted to check out the Brewery.  We were stoked to see it full of people.  While it was busy we were seated immediatly and had a wonderful server who was attentive and friendly.  The beer, Amberdextrous for the husband and Rock Queen for me was super tasty.  The food was outstanding!  You never know with pub food but this was a higher quality grub with fresh ingredients!  My son had the pork nachos (huge serving that we all fought over ) We ordered the artichoke/spincach dip and it was not only delish but the bread that accompanied was amazing. (baked onsite)
My husband had a bacon quesadilla that came with a fresh yummy cilantro/sour cream .
We were pretty stuffed but made room for dessert when we saw a stout brownie on the menu. Super tasty.  I hope this place is on the coast for a long time to come because we are already planning on what we are going to try on the menu our next visit!

This was a great place to stop at for some lunch and some tasty beer. My husband and I and group of others dropped in this past weekend to check it out. We were all on motorcycles so the ride up was amazing! Beautiful surroundings!!!! Anyways, the French Mexican War beer, which they brew themselves, is very good. You can taste the jalapeno, but it is not overpowering at all. It is great!!! The guys all had the cheddar broccoli soup, which they thought was a good hearty soup. It also came with yummy warm bread!!! The burgers they serve is also really good!!! Oh and don't forget the hot spinach, artichoke dip. It is served with their warm bread and veggies!!! Very well done!!!
All in all, we enjoyed this place! Service was a bit slow, however being brand new, I would expect there to be a few things that need to be worked out. It was getting pretty busy as we were finishing up and I think I few more servers would have helped.
This is definitely a good place to visit!!! I am sure this business will do very well!!! We will be back again soon!

    Very solid B.

I really like what they've done with the place. They had 3 of their own beers on tap, and we tried them all. They were all good. They had some guest brews as well...but we were there to try THEIR beer, of course...

Ordered a couple appetizers. The buffalo cauliflower was really good. I wish the cauliflower had a bit of crispness left on it, but the sauce has made it a wee bit soggy. An understandable issue, but I can't help but think there's a way to keep some crispness. The hop fried chicken was decent, but sounded better on paper. I was hoping to actually taste some hops in the batter. I couldn't - and the batter didn't have much flavor at all really. However, it was nicely light and crisp. The chicken seemed slightly undercooked, but certainly nothing to worry about. The coleslaw type salad served under the fried chicken was really good and we cleaned the plate! For $10.95 though, I expected another piece of chicken - or maybe it's an $8 appetizer.

The Amber ale was a nice middle of the road, easy drinking, Amber. I was really glad to see someone brewing a beer under 5% abv. That seems so rare these days. I'm not a huge IPA fan, but this was a solid CA style IPA. I was a little wary of the French Mexican War (French Farmhouse ale with Jalapenos), but the Jalapenos were just subtle enough to make the beer work.

The service was quick and very friendly - the owner/brewer even came by to say hello. (I'm hoping the one person here who felt otherwise here (as of this writing) just hit an unfortunate off-time - it happens now and then to the best of us). The view from the bar at sunset is fantastic!

They get a solid B. A few kinks maybe to work out, but we enjoyed our visit and we plan on returning.

Highway 1 Brewing Company has a clean, warm coastal brewery atmosphere and is great for all ages. Very friendly owners, staff and delicious food. Whether you are a local, a visitor or simply passing through the area, Highway 1 Brewing Co is a great place to eat and/or quench your thirst with one of their specialty beers. I'm a nearby local and can appreciate the restaurants' new vibe and great food as I have been to the former subpar Gazos Creek Grille many times. Finally! ... A place to turn to when too lazy to cook! On our first dining experience we ordered the entire kitchen (exaggerating) and have already many favorites! For starters, the Spicy Buffalo Cauliflower w/ Blue Cheese is unique and to die for!- so YUMMY!! The Spinach and Artichoke dip...another must have. I'm a big fan of soup so I consider myself a critic, their cauliflower and blue cheese soup---robustly flavorful, perfectly creamy- just GREAT! The burger was cooked to perfection with a savoring flavor on a fresh ciabatta bun. I recommend adding bacon and fried jalepenos ;) As for the BEER... I'm a fan of the Amberdextrous for it's light thirst quenching flavor and the French Mexican War for its more unique exotic taste. Would recommend the "Flight" beer sampler to explore, you'll be sure to find your own favorite!

    Worth the drive. Promise!
