While on a 650 mile motorcycle ride we happened upon Hwy 29 BBQ. Before the ride started there was only one rule - if any rider sees the word BBQ we pull off and try it out. We ate at some familiar places like Cooper's in Llano and Salt Lick in Driftwood, as well as several not-so-familiar places between Dallas and Austin, and Hwy 29 BBQ is the one spot that we can't stop talking about.
The brisket was melt-in-your mouth delicious and the ribs just fell of the bone. Everything was seasoned perfectly. The sauce was truly unique and it was oh-so good.
Not only was the food to die for, but the staff was so friendly. While getting a personal tour from Corey (one of the owners) we learned that they hand picked every stone that the pits are made out of. This is just part of what makes the experience special.
I can't recommend Hwy 29 BBQ enough. Stop reading these reviews and go eat here already!
What an awesome surprise! Being a resident Central Texan for my entire life (39) years, I thought I had pretty much discovered all the great barbecue around. While passing through Bertram Saturday my family and I decided to stop into Highway 29 Barbecue. We had seen it a couple of times, but let's be honest...most barbecue restaurants simply get it wrong so we weren't all that optimistic. We all know of the 3 or 4 good places, and can unfortunately list a bunch of the mediocre ones. I have to say this establishment has risen near the top of my list. And yes, I've had all those places you're thinking about. The brisket was tender and juicy, almost steak like. The sausage was fantastic. Sausage is pretty much idiot proof so must places have decent barbecue sausage. But we literally commented after every bite how great the flavor and even the texture of the meat was. One of my biggest pet peeves with barbecue restaurants is the weak barbecue sauce. You can tell that most of them use the same generic crap that comes in giant plastic jugs from restaurant supply houses. Highway 29 makes their own sauce from scratch, and it is perfect! Not overbearing and enhances the natural flavors of the meats. When your barbecue is great, you don't have to mask it or drown it in sauce. And where most barbecue places simply give up by serving soggy, flavorless, bland sides - we could tell that they took great pride in theirs. I can't stand grocery store old school mayonnaise based cole slaw. None of that here! They use a vinegar based dressing and definitely have a few "secret ingredients" making it quite possibly the best cole slaw I've ever tasted. Finally, the location is amazing. It is set in a historic building directly across from the train depot. It has the feeling that you're eating in an 1800's steakhouse. If you're anywhere nearby or just passing through, I promise you'll be very glad you stopped in.
Review Source:I drove a half hour out (past 2 Smokey Mo's....barf) to give this place a try and boy was I glad I did. The brisket was phenomenal, moist with a great crispy smokey spice rub. The ribs were also very good. The sides were homemade and tasty. I missed out on the banana pudding, but I'll make another trip out there real soon to give that a try. Luckily they just started taking credit cards, so I was able to double up on the delicious meats (I was limited on cash)...whew. Oh and the staff, nothing but super friendly and helpful.
