Here's the key to enjoying Island House Restaurant: Â Find Wachapreague, VA!!
Once you've made the journey, you can enjoy simple Eastern Shore "Traditional" dining at it's best. Â The building is nestled in the small marina village, and most of the patrons seem to be locals, stepping out on the town. Â I was afraid of a nursing home type menu, but, was stunned at the freshness...and flavor of the fare.
Being in VA, every establishment crows about crab cakes, but, Island House is the real deal. Â I must say, it's the freshest, best tasting crab meat I've had to date, in the state. Â The veggies were also cooked without removing the desired crispness.
From the fine food, to the scenic views, IH is worth a stop when traveling the Eastern Shore Hwy...
Visited here in August. The food was good and the service was great. We loved the super fresh oysters and crab cakes. My son had a turkey burger which he loved. Fries and salad were also good. The view is lovely and our server was awesome. She got our order right, explained everything and was professional. Â Great place to eat.
Review Source:We had a Wednesday afternoon lunch at Island House, so I can't comment on dinner. Our lunch was reasonably priced and well prepared. A large Caesar salad had a fine dressing. I had Oysters Parramore, which involves minced oysters in a sauce covered by crabmeat and cheese. Very good. The bar has a good selection, including local wines and craft beers. Service was friendly and fast. We drove 40 miles each way for lunch and were happy we did.
Review Source:Island House Restaurant is attached to a marina, and as such has a beautiful view of the water. Â The interior is very open, and the large windows allow customers to take full advantage of the scenic view whilst consuming their freshly caught seafood.

To start off, this was totally worth the 4 hour drive back and forth and $20 toll. Â A friend made the recommendation of coming here specifically during the months between January and March, as the oysters tasted exceptionally exquisite. These are not farm raised, but caught wild in the Atlantic (seaside), as opposed to the Chesapeake bay (bayside). Â For ~$14, you can get a dozen of these oysters, and these were the best tasting oysters I've ever had. Â You have the initial saltiness, which was not too overpowering, followed by it's succulent rich flavor. Â They were so good, we ended up getting three dozens of them. Â We also tried their fried oysters and clams, but the raw was by far the best.

Next, I ordered their clam chowder which to my pleasant surprise was not as heavy as most. For my entrée, I got their flounder with sweet potato wedges and green beans. I also tried their rock fish as well as their renown crab cake. Generally, I don't like crab cakes, but I have made an exception for theirs. The seasoning, texture, and taste of the crab cake were spot on, and it's no surprise why it received so much accolade.
For dessert, we got the coconut cake, crème brûlée, and chocolate bread pudding. The coconut cake was okay, but I would highly recommend the chocolate bread pudding. The crème brûlée was also executed and presented perfectly. However, if you find yourself already satiated, and have to pick one dessert item, I would definitely get the chocolate bread pudding. It's moist, chocolaty, but not too sweet.
Food: 6/5
Value: 4/5
Service: 3.5/5
Overall: 4.5
p.s. I know you can't get a 6/5 for food, but in my opinion, this should carry more weight than service
Had dinner here and it was pretty darn good. Sat outside on the water. The menu is pretty good. Had the flounder and scallops and man it was fresh and tasty. Tried the oysters with crabmeat as an appetizer but wasn't too thrilled with the mayo heavy ingredients. (that's just me, don't like mayo). The sweet potato rolls were out of this world! And the service was great!
Review Source:As an Eastern Shore "Local," I can tell you that The Island House offers the total package. It is under new ownership and Chef Charles prepares delectable culinary delights. Last night we had fresh Fried Drum and Scallops Au Gratin and it was delicious. The dining room overlooks the wonderful Eastern Shore Seaside & Barrier Islands in the distance. It is also family friendly:)
Review Source:We had lunch there today. Â The room provides many tables with great views of the water and marsh and marina activity. Â Very sunny, nice art work on the walls. Â Friendly, knowledgeable waitress.
I had a platter with a crab cake and clam strips, my wife had a flounder sandwich. Â For sides I had French fries and slaw, my wife had sweet potato fries. Â And we had an asparagus spears, roasted red pepper, goat cheese appetizer.
Everything was good. Â The asparagus spears were quite tender and tasty, the crab cake seemed all meat and both it and the clam strips were very good, as was the flounder. Â My wife enjoyed the sweet potato fries and commented on them to the waitress, who said they didn't have sugar or salt on them.
Then that temptress of a waitress mentioned the chef's award-winning chocolate bread pudding. Â Ahhh.
It was a meal we'll look back on happily for a long time. Â Not cheap but cheap for the quality, not entirely healthy but a great choice for a splurge.
We'll leave here soon but before we do I intend to get back to the Island House.
We traveled to Island House a few days ago where we expected a lull in service. We were wrong---- very attentive service and fantastic fresh seafood dishes. A great way to end 2011.
I look forward to more meals at Island House during high season. The views are an added sensation. And for challenge coin enthusiasts, I dare you to challenge the owner--- you will smile with awe.
The Island House is under new management and deserves to be put back on the map!
We ate here for dinner last night, and for a late lunch today after returning from a fishing / birding trip out of Wachapreague. Â Good margaritas and excellent local seafood. Â Today, my soft crabs were the best I have ever had (that I didn't cook myself). Â Yesterday, we brought in the flounder we caught and they cooked it for us. Â Staff is efficient and friendly, prices are reasonable, and sitting on the deck overlooking the expansive marsh is a treat.
We ate here twice during a week-long trip to the Eastern Shore. Â One night in the bar, the other night in the ocean view dining room. Â Friends loved the bronzed fish treatment and the burgers. Â Virginia wines available, decent beer selection. Â Great side dishes (broccoli, sweet potatoes wedges, baked potato, fries, salad, etc.). Â Nice atmosphere, good place for a family or group visiting the shore. Â Remember to check out the gift shop on the way out. Â Limited off-season hours (closed Monday-Wednesday).
