I guess my dad and  I must have hit a lucky night according to these reviews...  Service was prompt and friendly.  Food came timely.  We thought the meal was the best dinner we'd had on our roadtrip, 8 days in.

Beer:  Dad wasn't particularly fond of the IPA, but says it wasn't bad.  I had a sip and it tasted like regular IPA to me.  He had the brown nut something or other next and describes it as "mild, tasty, but not very effervescent."  I had a sip and it was unique - I couldn't say if it was good unique or bad unique.  I ordered the Hef and enjoyed both glasses. :)

Food: Onion Petals = YUM!  Salads = You know, salads. Fresh salads.  Dad had the steak with seasonal veggies and baked potato.  He now says "it was thin, but nicely cooked."   During dinner though he was nodding and "mmm"ing and saying it was the best meal he'd had so far.  I had the pasta primavera.  Some people might argue there was an overabundance of veggies, but for me tonight, it was perfect.  I tend to find anything with alfredo to be too rich and repetitive in taste to really enjoy the full meal.  The abundance of veggies kept the flavor varied and enjoyable for me.  I had the half size, which for a smaller appetite was the perfect size.

This place sucks.   I was driving through on a long road trip and looking forward to a good meal but oh boy, did we run out of luck.  I ordered spaghetti and meat balls.  First, the sauce tasted like it was straight out of a tomato sauce can without any prep.  The meatballs, frozen inside.  Really, if you can't get a simple dish like spaghetti and meat balls right, you don't deserve to be in business.  There was absolutely no concern for the food and it showed.  If you don't care about food, you should not be in the restaurant biz.  But I guess in Cortez CO, you can get away with it.  Dont' go here unless you are starving and nothing else is open.

    July 2012:
We were travelling and got take-out because it was too hot to leave our pup in the car.
When we got back to the motel, we found that our salads were only half-prepared!

We ordered a taco salad, and the Asian Chicken Salad.

The Asian salad was nothing but lettuce, some odd chunks of pre-cooked chicken, and a little packet of dressing.   No noodles, no slivered almods, no green onions or celery.
The taco salad didn't even come with salsa!   Really?   A dry salad with no salsa to spice it up?

The place is poorly designed, so that the workers in one half can't see the rest of the place - and you can sit forever in the foyer.

We will not be back, but I doubt this place will be open next time we're in Cortez.
    It was that bad.

I give this place two stars, only because we didn't get sick.  The half rack of ribs was edible. The sides and appetizer were marginal.

Unfortunately, the beer left such a horrible taste in my mouth that I can't be very generous with the food review.  I'm a little pissed because this place gives microbreweries a bad name.  Please, Mr. J. Fargo, STOP SAYING THAT THIS IS BEER!!!

If you want a real tasty microbrew, travel a little ways up the road to the Dolores River Brewery, a real Colorado brewpub, or try Ska beer from Durango.

There are only 2 places in Cortez I highly reommend and this is one of them. Food is always good, prices are reasonable, good service and a great atmosphere.

Don't bother. We came for the beer, as we are working our way across Colorado breweries. Only 4 beers and each had a weird "pool water" aftertaste. We had nachos to snack on, stale chips with hardly any toppings. The service was not very friendly either. Being that we were there at 6 pm on a Saturday night and there were only a couple other tables in the whole place...good clue to stay away.

We stopped for lunch on our way to Durango.  I was sorry that we did.  I would assume two things when going to a micro brewery...good food and good beer.

The food was okay, but certainly nothing to write home about.  There was nothing memorable about it at all.  While I am not a beer drinker, my husband and my uncle each ordered a different beer.  Neither liked their own or each other's.  I don't even think my husband finished his...and this is a man who will drink a pint in 5 minutes because "he's thirsty."  He remained parched at J Fargo's.

So okay for a needed stop, but certainly not a destination.  I would recommend sampling a beer before ordering, though.

Not worth it at all, overpriced mediocre food. Was told the special was chicken fried steak so I ordered that, after over a 45 minute wait our food came out from someone in the kitchen we told him we about walked because of the wait, people who had ordered 15 minutes after us had their food before us. Not even an apology from the waitress but then someone came over and didn't identify themselves and said we had a 10% discount because of the wait "The kitchen was slammed" I told her we saw several tables who ordered after us get food before us then we were told we had a new waitress. Got the bill and guess what the chicken fried steak special was the same price as the regular chicken fried steak maybe the special was you get to wait for it. We are thinking of moving here to Cortez but I hope we find a better place to eat.

All around horrible experience.  Our food took an hour to serve, the burgers were over cooked, our kids mac and cheese was fridge cold. The beer was weird tasting. The waitress was very rude and threatened to cal the cops when we complained about the bad food, horrible service and outrageous bill.

Okay, my wife and I ate here just after the regular lunch time on a Wednesday so it was almost empty. We were seated immediately, the drink orders taken immediately and the food service was fast. We ate simple - a couple of salads and a turkey "wrap" - it's hard to screw up a meal like this so it is no surprise that the food was fresh and tasty.

The waitress checked on us frequently and it was a good place to have stopped for lunch in an unfamiliar town.

I'd go back. I suppose this visit *may* warrant a fourth star but other than good service and good food (which is what a restaurant is SUPPOSED to have) there was nothing remarkable about it.

It sure deserves better than the one-star and two-star ratings from earlier customers.

    I say try it out.

I didn't have a bad experience, and the food was ok. Some stuff was a bit over priced for the amount of food served. The beers were not the greatest, and could be a lot better. Bought the sampler and opted not to buy a pint. Didn't hate or love it, but will try other places before coming back.

I am a local and have been in this place a hand full of times... its basically the same story everytime. Horrible service and decent food!!!

I just decided to give them another chance this evening... my dad and I went in the get some dinner. It had been about 6 months since i last went in with my family, and the food was decent, the beer was aweful... super yeasty, and bitter!!! I wanted to give them another chance and see if the micro brew had improved.

We came in... and got seated and she told us the specials for the day. A pulled pork or beef brisket taco. I ordered an IPA...i took one sip and it tasted like yeasty bitter crap again... so imbalanced and undrinkable and then the waitress came back to take our order. My dad asked her if they were able to make a pulled pork sandwich instead of a taco. She had to ask the cook if it was possible... she came back awhile later and said it was not possible. The manager came over and explained it was impossible too. I just told my dad that we could go somewhere else, so we got up to leave. I asked the waitress if it was fine to just leave and not pay for the beer since i had only taken a sip of it... she obliged. That is until we reached the hostess stand, and the manager said we had to pay for it. I asked here if she was kidding. We had an argument about the pulled pork... i asked here if the tacos were all pre made... she said no. I asked why you couldn't just put the pulled pork on a kaiser bun instead of a taco.... she said she was just following rules. I asked her if she was the manager, and she said yes. Managers can accomadate the customer if they want to keep business. We paid for the horrible beer and were given a card to contact the owners.

I told here no wonder this place had no customers in it... and we wouldn't be back! She told me i was being mean... i was just stating the facts. I am sorry i asked my dad to give this place another chance.

We went to Mr. Happys... got great customer service, good beer, and good food. The beer is also very tasty over at main street brewery!

Local businesses like J fargos need to get there act together, and appreciate and cater to there customers more, because it looks like there about to go out of business. I feel sorry for the owners and everyone who works there! I will never go back or recommend it to anyone. Maybe they can scrape by with tourists who don't know any better.

The two-star description really sums up this place nicely- Meh, I've experienced better. On all counts. During my particular visit, I ordered the chicken tortilla soup and  a beer sampler. My husband got hot buffalo wings and a beer sampler as well. The chicken tortilla soup was okay, as were the wings- there wasn't anything wrong with them, but they weren't restaurant-quality food. If someone told me they were from the grocery store, I would not be shocked. While they aren't like gross, when I go to a restaurant, I do expect something better than sh-t I could buy from my local Vons or Super WalMart.

As for the beer....not that great. At all. So bitter- like sh-tty IPA after-taste bitter. And only one was an IPA! Though there were 4 different kind of beer, they tasted very similar. Only one of them was somewhat enjoyable in taste- the rest were just better forms of alcohol consumption when compared to doing things like drinking mouth wash or soaking a tampon in vodka. The only redeeming quality of the beer sampler-cheapness. It's $3 for four 6oz tasters. That's 24 oz of beer for $3. Not bad- I'm down to get drunk for that cheap haha.  At $3, I'll sacrifice taste if I'm in the mood to get sh-tty.

Overall, I recommend coming here if you are super broke and want to get drunk and eat some blah food.

My wife and I were on a road trip from California to Ohio and stopped in Colorado for lunch. We had heard there were lots of microbreweries in Colorado so were excited to try some good beer and lunch. So we ran in from the car to the store through the rain and were seated in the bar area. I ordered some hot wings, my wife ordered tortilla soup, and we both got the beer samplers.

The food was absolutely nothing special. The wings were just like frozen wings from a grocery store and the tortilla soup was very bland. So I figured the beer would make up for it... Blah... So bitter and every one tasted exactly the same. I'm no beer connoisseur by any means, but I appreciate a good beer and these unfortunately were not good in any way... not even decent... I only finished one and just set the others aside figuring I'd rather just get back on the road than keep drinking those beers... I recommend just looking up another place if you're looking for some good beer and food

Generally meh. Forgettable. I'd eat there again if I had to. Decor is uninspired, as is the food. Nachos are decent, and also the only thing I could have as a celiac.

Tried it once for dinner when it first opened.. Can't remember what we had, but it wasn't good.  A friend had their company Christmas Party there a couple of years ago.  Ended up with food poisoning.  Buyer beware.........

Came here for dinner after a long day at work and tried a grilled salmon salad. The fish was totally overcooked and was way disappointing. Coworker had the chicken fried steak which he said was edible but wasn't pleasing his palate very much.

Go here to eat but dont expect anything spectacular.

Food was good and reasonably priced.  My tortillas for the fajitas were at best lukewarm; would have been nice to have been hot.  Service was a bit lacking. I take issue with a server who is asking you a question as she approaches the table and is turned away before you get a chance to respond. She also never bothered to ask if we wanted refills. She is young and will learn that a bit more professionalism is needed if she wants good tips.

Before I get started, I have to say I've eaten at J. Fargo's several times for lunch and dinner, and have experienced the same for both.

When entering J. Fargo's, the reception podium is ahead of you, and usually unmanned.  To the right is the pub area, to the left is the restaurant; and you will see employees walking about; but no one at reception.  So you wait, and wait, until someone takes notice of you.

After being seated and reading the menu, you wait for someone to take your drink order; and that is slow in coming, especially if you order coffee; seems they never have any ready.  Then you wait for your order; if you ordered an appetizer, soup or salad, don't be surprised if everything comes at once.  If you want a refill on your drink, good luck finding your waiter or waitress; they're usually hiding in the kitchen.

Now there are televisions on the walls, so you can bide your time with watching one of those, or with conversation; but why you should have to is a big question.  Ok, so that's the big negative for J. Fargo's.

The food though is very good; the burgers are half pounders which you can design to your own tastes; the sandwiches are stacked; the French fries and onion rings are awesome.  Their barbequed brisket or pork sandwiches are to die for; and do try the chili.

Basically, if you have a lot of time on your hands, don't mind waiting or being ignored, and are just looking for good food, then J. Fargo's is your place to go.  Good thing I have patience, and the seating is comfortable.

Stoped by for lunch, ordered a Philly Cheese steak and Red ale.  The ale had a nasty bitter taste, the philly was okay but uninspired, they needed to grill the peppers and onions, toast the roll and use a better cheese.  Decor is ihop with a bar area.  Service was good with a few customers were there

j fargos is basically the independently owned version of applebees. the interior seemed fairly blah (pretty empty and quiet) but the patio was nicely shaded and the weather was lovely, so we sat out there. they had a bizarre menu selection: basic bar food (fried things and burgers), pizza, calzones and teriyaki bowls (odd). i went with the blt and my mans opted for the bacon cheddar burger.

the burger looked great, but was apparently underwhelming. my blt was good: crispy bacon on sourdough bread, though it was served club style which was more bread than i needed. i opted for the fresh veggies as a side, which was a nice healthy option to flank my blt :P

nothing stupendous, but not a bad choice for lunch.
