I give this place ONE star because I cannot give them ZERO!
It was a Sunday night and my boyfriend and I were driving from Shreveport to Austin. Â We searched for BBQ places that we could stop and grab a bite to eat before our almost 6 hour drive home. We pulled into Jim's BBQ, right behind another car with a couple in it. Â We followed the other couple into the restaurant and were expecting a warm welcome with a hello. Â Small towns are supposed to be warm and welcoming....right? Â I'm from a small town and I can tell you that no one in my town would have EVER treated us AND the other couple the way we were treated when we walked into that place.
The OPEN sign was lit up on the outside, plain as day! Â But, when we walked in, all of the chairs were up on the tables and every worker, owner, whatever they were, GLARED at us like we had committed a crime. No one said a word to us or the other couple. There was a couple sitting up at the bar (I think this is an old Dairy Queen or something like that and converted into a BBQ place) eating. While we were waiting for the other couple to be seated, we grabbed a menu off the bar and were looking at what we'd like to order. After realizing he wasn't being greeted, the gentleman that walked in before us asked "are y'all closed"? Â The lady, in a very rude voice said "yes, in 2 minutes". Â It was 7:28pm.
Now, I know that if you are in the food service business...the days can get long and I'm sure even more-so when you are in a small town, but no small town business that I know of would ever have turned 4 paying customers (obviously new patrons) down because they were closing in 2 minutes. Â In my mind, you accept diners up until the time you close. Â After closing time, the sign goes off, the door is locked and no one else gets to come in, but those that were there prior to your closing time and those that were there WHILE THE NEON OPEN SIGN IS STILL ON...should get to come in, order and eat even after you've closed your doors. Yes, it may make you stay there a tad bit later, but you are getting paid.
I guess what is appauling to me even more-so than her snappy and unapologetic tone was that she never offered to 'wrap something up to-go' for us (we would have taken it to go) or offered any other words other than the "yes, in 2 minutes". Â I asked if they knew of any other eating establishments around the area that might still be open and the people eating at the bar were the ones who answered me (with Catfish Village at the next exit).
We read a few reviews that the BBQ was awesome and the catfish was great (that is what I was hungry for), but I guess we'll never find out. Â We walked out the door, right behind the other couple and continued on our way, shocked that we were sent away while the neon OPEN sign was still on. Â
Thanks Jim's BBQ, for the warm 'small town welcome' you gave us!
For a BBQ restaurant, their ribs were pretty bad.
We were on the first of the 2 days driving from Dallas to Orlando and before we can get to Shreveport, LA, our 2 year old daughter was hungry (and tired of sitting in the car) so when we see the sign for BBQ, we had to stop and try it out.
Everything (fried fish, curly fries etc...) was good except for the ribs. It was on the dry side and did not have enough flavor. Very disappointed.
Jim's is a GREAT barbeque place! I grew up in Waskom, and absolutely love this place. Now that I'm living in Santa Cruz, CA I can only dream of food this good (and at the price!). If you are driving through this TINY little town please stop and get yourself some barbeque! Their burgers are huge so be careful ordering if you don't have a large appetite. I always love the chopped beef sandwich and the fries, although the ribs are exceptional as well. Don't understand how they got 3 out of 5 stars. They deserve all 5! It is an older building in a small town but the food and atmosphere is great.
Review Source:Jim's Bar-B-Que is a staple for Waskom residents, and people who are looking for their very first opportunity for Texas BBQ when you cross the border from Louisiana. Located right on the border in Waskom, Jim's provides great ribs, good brisket, and plenty of chicken fried ____ (insert your preferred meat here).
Couple that with sweet or unsweet tea and you are in for a treat. They also have a fresh selection of homemade desserts.
I typically go with the ribs here.
