John's Place

let's just say everything else on a sunny father's day sunday was closed and there was no other option and so me and the mister ended up at john's place.

let's just say the toothless bartendress coulda  ignored us a bit more even though the place was pretty much vacant. vacant that is, save for the elderly person of indeterminate gender slouched over at the bar, whose electric wheelchair was sitting in the middle of what i suppose is a dance floor.

let's just say it smelled the teensiest bit funky.

but the place had its moments, so i must give credit where credit is due. i mean, i gotta admit that the solitary drunken woman (we'll call her connie, as that's how she introduced herself) who relied on over enunciation to combat excessive slurring was pretty damn funny. funny, that is, until she tipped over onto the bad side of being drunk, at which point it was like a dark mask came over her. then it was just sad.

so i guess that about sums it up. john's place is just sad. and even sadder? it's attached, literally, to a charter school. that just seems kinda wrong.

This was the first stop of the Hellhunter/Passive Aggressive mini tour.  The band Embryonic Devourment booked this gig and we were eager to see what kind of music scene Willits had.

Upon first impression, we were a little weary of this place.  It looked like a hick dive.  Country music is blaring and the customers all look like old ranch hands from the Double Cross Ranch in Amarillo, Texas.  It reminded me a lot of the bar in the movie Road House.... and we're supposed to play metal here!  

Anyway, we cautiously load in and are greeted by friendly smiles from the locals, bartenders and the Embryonic dudes.  Everyone is cool.  The place looks like it's been around a long time, but it's a good thing.  Drinks are fairly cheap and the bartenders definately know how to take care of the bands!  Cheers to them!  

For a Thursday night, the place was pretty busy.  I guess this is the hot spot for night life in Willits.
