This New York gal is travelling from South Dakota to Texas. Turned to YELP for a place to stop for lunch in Valentine, Ne. and, boy, am I glad I did!! This place was terrific!! Clean, pleasant staff and what may have been the best burger I've ever had-and I've had my share in my 67+ years. I chose the Panhandle Supreme. It comes with jalapeño ranch, Alfredo and pepper jack-all of which I passed on. So basically it was a 10 oz. flame grilled burger with barbeque brisket & crispy onion strings on an amazing marble roll. It was served with waffle fries that were equally delicious.
Guy Fieri should drop in some day...the place is most deserving!!
Passing through on the way to Rapid City and was pleasantly surprised with how good the food is, etc... Â Atmosphere is geared more toward a family (and I was alone but still felt comfortable and welcomed). Â I had the Sand Hills Fish-perfectly breaded (I could still tell it was fish and could actually taste the fish vs. the breading!) . Â My waitress was Michelle and she gave me excellent service!
Review Source:Looking back at the menu I'm not really sure why I ended up with what I did... probably just because Bill ordered it, our waitress said it won some kind of 'best burger in Nebraska' contest, and I got excited. I honestly didn't even read the description.
What I ended up getting was the Joseph Angus Burger, a 10-oz burger with jalapeno bacon, cob-smoked ham, bbq sauce, house ranch, Swiss and cheddar cheeses, topped with two large, homemade onion rings.
I feel like this burger should have come with a warning... something like, "recommended to be split" or "get ready to feel uncomfortable". Bill and I both got one - with fries on the side no less - and neither of us ended up finishing it.
Turns out the burger won the 2013 Nebraska Beef Council Best Burger, beating out some pretty notable competitors. <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnebeef.org%2Fbestburgerfinalists.aspx&s=5359b609e4b4bc9fc0715d005aa599d5063756ba296c234430d3d16c73ba5c14" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://nebeef.org/bestbu…</a>
It was, I have to say, a darn good burger. There was just soooo much of it. Thinking back, maybe starting off the meal with steak appetizers and a large pink 'dragon' margarita also had something to do with how I felt after the meal...
All in all, we had a really decent meal at the Peppermill. It's mostly what you'd expect from a small-town restaurant, but with just enough additional panache.
