On a Saturday went looking for a place to watch a college football game and went to a few places that were terrible and some were just to touristy. Â I walked in this place and the waitress asked what was I looking for and she accomendated me by changing one of the 3 TV's to my game.
This place is an excellent small/divey bar.
Dart's, pool table and a jukebox.
Ordered fish/chips and Irish nachos both were excellent. Beer selection is ok.
Scotch Egg was delicious not to mention the wasabi sauce provided. A combination I never considered was a match made in heaven. I will return to try the rest of the food. Judging by the other patrons the rest of the menu was the fair you would love at the pub. Cabbage and sausage is my favorite at home and the gent at the bar was swallowing his like a mad man. So by the smell, his appetite and the looks of it I will love it as well. Great atmosphere and service too. Go there, be cool and have a good time.
Review Source:Kelly's is as close to Ireland on the island as you're going to get. Â Now that I think about it, Kelly's is easily the most authentic Irish pub in the entire RGV. Â 10 beers on draught include Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA, Stella Artois, Blanche de Bruxelles, Left Hand Milk Stout, and of course Guinness. Â Guinness always properly poured in 20oz imperial pint glasses. Â Black & delicious! Â Entertainment includes a jukebox, darts & a pool table and 3 large very well placed HDTVs. Â The non-smoking indoors is a breath of fresh air (pun intendend) on an island full of smokey bars. Â But not to worry smokers because there is a nice patio for you to get your fix on, not to mention enjoy your drink in nice weather. Â Word is there will be a kitchen serving traditional Irish fare amongst other favorites in the not so distant future. Â I'll be looking forward to that! Â I suggest you get to Kelly's and quench your thirst soon. Â Slainte!
Update 7/7/11 - It's been a year since I wrote my first review and I can continue to say that Kelly's is still my favorite bar on SPI. Â So what's changed you ask? Â The kitchen is open!! Â (and actually has been for several months now) Â As you would expect in an Irish pub all the traditional favorites are served and done quite well! Â Some menu items include: shepherds pie, corned beef & cabbage, boxty, Guinness stew, and fish & chips. Â A couple words on these dishes - the corned beef is seasoned in the pub and makes for excellent flavor! Â The shepherds pie is made with both beef & lamb and comes in a HUGE portion. Â Bring a big appetite or plan on asking for a box! Â There are also non-traditional dishes such as burgers, a Rueben sandwich & a gulf coast twist on fish & chips - SHRIMP & chips. Â The Rueben is made with the same amazing corned beef seasoned in house. Â I gotta say, I'm a big fan of Rueben sandwiches and the one at Kellys is top notch! Â One last word - almost everyone who visits SPI Â wants to get their seafood fix and you can definitely do that at Kellys with the Shrimp & Chips. Â Wild caught Gulf of Mexico shrimp fried to perfection in a Guinness batter - these are easily the BEST on the island. Â I rarely order fried shrimp in other places because it's not my favorite thing but I can't stop ordering them here! Â Ask for a side of milk stout-wasabi sauce for dipping them in for an asian twist. Â I suggest you get to Kelly's and satisfy your appetite soon. Â Slainte!
ps- Several locals gather on Wednesday nights for team dart tournaments. Â It's casual, but competitive and anyone is welcome to join in.
Yelpers... locals... this place has a "reputation". Â I found on another place on the net: "The pub has been reopened with a new owner and a total remodel of the inside and out.All new everything.Looks and smells great, ice cold beers. They opened as a no smoking bar with a smoking patio outside for patrons who smoke, just like in Ireland"
Going to stop by and check it out. Anyone?
