You won't be disappointed. The menu is fresh, unique, and the food will not disappoint. The extensive beer list is great too.

Good beer and food options that won't cost you an arm and a leg. Close to the baseball stadium so a perfect spot to grab some grub before the game.

Every time I come her it smells overwhelmingly like sewer odor.  I can't figure this out, but it makes me wonder how clean the place really is.  I will admit they have an excellent beer selection, but the sewer odor is just a turn-off.

Don't be put off by the seedy row houses next to the Knickerbocker. Once inside you are in a classic old Tavern. If you like "dives" you'll love the Knickerbocker.  The beer selection probably is the best in Altoona. I am an IPA drinker and they had three including Dogfish 60 minute IPA.  The food is sandwiches, fish and chips, burgers and such.  My conpanions liked their food  but my Pittsburgh Special Sandwich was overcooked.  The bill was $81 for 5 people and no one left hungry.

Based on the great reviews in yelp - we attended the knickerbocker Tavern one rainy afternoon. We were on vacation and looked for a nice experience. When we walked in, the place looked a little seedy, which brought our hopes up for s delicious fare. The menu is comprised mostly of pub fare - which is sandwiches and fried stuff. I took th 1904 sandwich which was supposed to be made of steak. I was asked as to how I'd like my steak made and asked for medium. When I got the sandwich, the steak inside was well done and tough as a shoe sole. One of the worst steak sandwiches ever - borderline inedible. We also ordered fries which never made it to our table. After our server passed by 5 minutes later we finally were able to ask for what happend to our fries. She said she'll get them right away. 10 minutes later after finishing our sandwiches we got piping hot fries. Not an apology or even taking off the fries off the check.
The bad service was throughout the meal - our server just wasn't there. Considering we were one of 2 tables (and the bar) it's simply inexplicable
When we finished our meal and got the check - our server disappeared again. After waiting for 10 minutes - I gave up and gave the check with my credit card to the barman.
All in all - bad food coupled with horrible service. One of the worst dining experiences I had in recent times.
I would recommend to avoid this place if at all possible - McDonalds serves better food with much better service.

We were in Altoona for the weekend and, after reading all the great reviews, had dinner here the first night.  After a few bites of our appetizers and a look at/taste of the impressive beer list, we knew we'd be coming back the next night as well.

Great, incredibly friendly service, amazing number of beers on tap and available to take home (with knowledgeable recommendations from the staff), the fried zucchini made even a 14-year old happy, and the onion rings are too good to get just a half foot of.  The Pittsburgh sandwich was fantastic as well.  Can't say enough good things about this place!

This is one of my favorite places to eat and hang out in Altoona. The food is consistenly excellent, the service is almost always consistently good, and the crowd is ecclectic. Very crowded on weekends and during the summer, though, but very rarely so crowded you can't find a place to sit. The only disappointing thing is that outside of the summer season, the menu is a bit more limited. However, I've never had a bad meal there or a bad time. Definitely a good place for the beer lover. Eric makes a mean Old Fashioned and an awesome White Russian. Parking is tough, especially on weekends, so be prepared to park in the neighborhood and walk. (Pst...don't park at the Doggie Den...I almost got towed!)

Yes the beer selection is good and the food tastes home made, but if this is the best bar in Altoona as some people are saying I'd be pretty concerned for the area.  It's a dive bar where the locals congregate.  Some get up and play along with the live entertainment (guitar player) or sing along during his set.  So if you're an outsider expect to feel a little out of the loop.  That said if you can figure out the parking (around the side of the building I think) its an above average food experience.

We went here with 2 small children. The service was excellent, the beer was good and cold, and our entrees were delish. I had the Greek panini and my husband had a portabello mushroom sandwich. My panini was really flavorful and not too huge. I also got cheese fries, and though I've rarely met a plate of cheese fries I didn't like, this was very good. The place is large and spacious with a few more secluded rooms. Give it a try!

Amazing beer selection- not just for Altoona, but for anyplace!  Solid food choices, and an all-around great atmosphere.  Love the way they do wings, and you can't go wrong with the Rachel!  Fish and chips have been hit (and lately) miss, but I can get past this small disappointment.  The Knick usually carries a wide array of beers (though sometimes the selection's a little heavy on IPAs).  There's always something new to try!

I live in Chambersburg, and since my fiance moved here, we don't get back to the Knick nearly enough.  Our local bars just can't compete.  I love the Knick's cool, dark interior, knowledgeable staff, and interesting mix of patrons.  Couldn't ask for more in a neighborhood bar!

    LOVE THIS PLACE!

It's one of my favorite bar/restaurants! Great menu selection- I honestly haven't had one bad meal there. Do yourself a favor and don't pass up on the nachos - they're amaaaaazing! If you're unsure of what to get for your meal, give The Rachel, their buffalo chicken wrap or jalapeno burger (make sure you get ranch or mayo on the side for for the burger) a try. But again, I think the best BLT I've ever had in my life has came from there so I don't think you'll pick something bad! :)

They have a huge assortment of beers and their staff has always been able to recommend one that I would enjoy!

Oh, and the staff - always great! Even when they have big crowds I've always felt like I was taken care of.

The atmosphere is very cozy and comfortable. Upon entering you'll find the main bar with seating and at first you'll think that its tiny and wonder how the parking lot is so crowded and there's only 20 people inside. However, if you make your way through you'll find there are more indoor dining/sitting areas. When then weather is nice there is also a huge outdoor patio - complete with twinkle lights at night! :)

Parking can be a pain on busy nights BUT the whole experience inside makes it worth it so don't let that get you down. Don't park at the Doggie Den up the street though, they will tow you.

If you haven't been to The Knick, check it out! It's a place I visited weekly when I lived in the area and I stop by every time I'm home!

PS - A lot of people would always say "isn't that place expensive?" when I'd mention that I was there or suggest it for dinner. No, it's not expensive at all unless you're eating for two and drink a ton. Go see for yourself.

Hands down this is the best bar in Altoona - I'd go insofar as to say the best in the state. It'd stand up as a first-rate joint in any city I've ever lived in. The selection is terrific - both beer and alcohol.

The crowd is always well populated with regulars who are friendly and will make helpful recommendations.

The main bar is a perfect sized neighbourhood joint, but there's a large back room for groups and where you can be a bit rowdier.

The food is outstanding. Probably the best bar food I've ever eaten. The selection is large, the portions are large and satisfying and you can't beat the consistency and flavour. Try the onion rings - but be warned, you'll want the full foot of them. Anything less won't be enough.

Hmm, this is a pretty cool place that would actually do well outside of Altoona PA.  It's not big by any means but that's part of its charm.  The crowd was lively and seemed like they were regulars.  The bartender was fast with the service.  If I ever come back to Altoona, I wouldn't mind hitting this place up again.

Ended up taking a trip to Blue Knob to do some shredding before the season ends so we ended up staying in Altoona.  We wanted to go to Unos but found out that they had been closed so we ended up going to the Knickerbocker Tavern.  It was a good decision.  We found a place to park and walked into the bar.  He was starving I wasn't.  We sat down and started off with Chicken Wings.  I liked them a lot.  They cooked them to where they aren't soggy--they fried them then put on the sauce now that's the way it should be done.  I got a bacon cheeseburger and he got a sandwich.  We both thought they were really good.  The best part of the night was the drinks--we really had a great time.  Now, coming from Northern VA drinks are crazy expensive at some spots so when we looked at that receipt....that's all it took.  The next night..back to Knickerbocker Tavern.  If I ever go to Blue Knob again--I'll be staying in Altoona--and I'll be going to the Knickerbocker Tavern.

After much anticipation, I finally made it to Knickerbocker Tavern this Saturday night. During the week I lost my license, but wasn't thinking right, and thought I could just go for dinner.

The door guy wouldn't let me step in or even look at the menu without an ID. It is soo much smaller than I imagined. Think one room, bar and kitchen inclusive.

They had a good crowd though, for being so small, and a bunch of people were walking in as we left.

You could smell that they had a fryer from outside. I'm intrigued, oddly enough, and hopefully will make it back to try and write a more substantial review!

so, I'd go there again, and have.  They have a hand pump (one, with Victory Hop Devil on it, slightly too warm, but nice), and a wide range of beers.  The fries are very good indeed.  The soup was slightly tepid but again, very nice indeed.  The bathrooms are quaint, that is to say, far too small.  The layout is rambling, which is sort of interesting, and the courtyard is indeed delightful on a summer day or evening.  It's not worth a trip, but if you are in Altoona, it's nice.

The Knickerbocker (or The Knick) is probably one of the most chill places in Altoona for people to gather and relax. They have excellent sandwiches, appetizers, and soups. They always have good beer on tap (26 taps, I think) and also have a wide variety of selections in their coolers. During the warmer months, the patio is open and is a great place to enjoy the summer nights. Pricing is reasonable and they normally have $3 draft specials of good beers each night.

Great food for a bar. Nice patio that you can sit on out back between the buildings when it isn't raining or snowing, doesn't happen much in Altoona.  Very large selection of beers to choose from, including a lot of uncommon ones. Very good onion rings.

One of the best bar/food experiences anyone in Barrage has ever had.  Lots of beer choices, great food.  Unfortunately, it's a bar in Pennsylvania, so smoking is allowed inside.  Other than that, A+.
