My first one star review.
My husband's family has a cabin in Wellston on the lake (3rd generation owners). There are not a lot of options for restaurants but rather than drive to Manistee for breakfast, we decided to head to the Kozy Kitchen less than a mile from the cabin. It was late Sunday morning and clearly a very busy time. We were able to get a table right away and place our order within a few minutes. Turns out my husband decided he wasn't hungry so I was the only one to order. I chose the Belgian waffle special that was advertised on the wipe board.  That's where the pleasant experience ended. I asked for half/half for my coffee twice and finally asked  another nearby table if I could have some of theirs. Not a huge deal. After 30 minutes with no sign of my waffle, I started noticing a couple of people standing outside the kitchen asking where their meals were (45 minute waits were mentioned).  I waited another 10 minutes or so and then lined up to ask as well.  My waffle order was about 8 orders out from even being started. I asked them to cancel my order and went up to the counter to pay for my one cup of coffee. In the 40 minutes I waited, no one else visited the table with any coffee, explanations, or apologies.  I did not make a big deal out of the cancellation. Yes, I was annoyed but not about to make a scene.  But, clearly some people near us heard the exchange and started loudly making comments "Huh, they must be from the city." And then laughing loudly.  Sorry, but all I ordered was a WAFFLE. And not even one update in 40 minutes?! I've had better service in 3rd World Countries.  Yes, I realize they were busy. And, in their defense, the people that did get their food seemed happy. I guess I'll never know!  I would have greatly appreciated some notice as to "the kitchen is really backed up right now, it's going to be a while."
My husband and I fish in the Wellston area 2 times each year in the fall. Â Dagmar's Kozy Kitchen is the BEST. Â This other review is absolutely right about the stuffed hash browns! Â Ham off the bone in copious quantities, onions, green peppers and mushrooms (and, of course, cheese). Â Fortunately, you can order a half-order, because that will take up a good portion of your plate. (Hungry men definitely can put away a whole order, but you will be FULL)! Â I get the 1/2 order with two eggs over medium, and put them on top. Â The half order with the eggs will STUFF me (pun intended), for dinner and leave me plenty for the next day's breakfast. Â Get the whole wheat toast and the awesome strawberry jam.
R U a fan of roast turkey? Â Real roast turkey like at Thanksgiving? Â It's on the dinner menu most weekends. Â It comes with home made mash potatoes and home made gravy (I ask them to smother it). Â Like all of Dag's portions, this too, is enough for me for two meals.
They also make INCREDIBLE omelettes, which are as well-stuffed as their hash browns. Â These can also be ordered as a half-order.
Their fried chicken in a basket is crispy and juicy.
I never had a bad meal at the Kozy Kitchen, and I've been going there since Dagmar (now the owner), was a waitress there - more than twenty years.
AWESOME. Â And the value - HUGE! Â The prices are so tiny you can eat like a king/queen and barely dent your wallet.
